Unable To Copy Files During Installation
Apr 5, 2005
I initially had a problem with java after installing a SP2 update for IE. And eventually reinstalled XP, that didn't correct the issue and then I had to get a new product code because I was in the "you have 30 days to activate" loop even though my copy of XP was already activated. So called Microsoft, got new product key and started to install again. This is when I first got the "Unable to copy files" error. I tried 2 different copies of XP but got the same issue, with the same files, with each disk.I've talked to Microsoft for hours, and finally had a guy tell me it was my motherboard (now this is after having swapped out my memory with the manufacturer). I just received my replacement board (M7NCD by Biostar) and I am still getting the same error. The gist is that at the dsound3d.dll, I start to get "unable to copy file" errors. I attempt to retry the copy, which works occasionally, but eventually I get an error (normally a memory error) Microsoft had said that even with those errors, it wasn't my memory but my motherboard that was the issue

I have been having the following problem off and on for some time:
When I try to copy/paste files and folders in windows XP explorer (or in the desktop or a program's dialog box), windows wants to re-install one of the programs I have already installed on my computer or that I installed once upon a time.
Currently this is happening with Roxio Easy media Creator 7, but in the past it has happened with many other programs, such as MS Office, Roxio and some other shareware programs.

I have an IDE drive housed in an external USB enclosure. When I connect it to my XP Pro (SP2) desktop it is recognised, and I can browse the folders and files. However when I try to copy a large number of files from the drive to a local hard drive on the desktop I get a "resource no longer available" error, and the external drive is no longer visible to the PC. I can then disconnect and reconnect the drive but only get back into the same loop.

Where are the installation files located on the XP CD? So I can copy the files to the hard drive, and then install XP off the Hard Drive.

I recently reinstalled XP but I didn't format the hard drive during the process. My hard drive is now almost full because the files and folders were not deleted...and they are nowhere to be found. I vaguely remember an option somewhere to delete files from a previous installation in xp but I can't seem to find it anywhere.I even tried Googling it but can't find it. Does anyone know how I can get rid of these old files.

I cannot move any of the desktop icons.I cannot drag and drop any files, but copy and paste works.I cannot mouse click in between different programs many times and often have to use Alt-Tab to get around windows.Since this has shown up, I reformatted and installed Windows at least 10 times. I've run numerous virus and spyware programs and found the system to be clean.

I've lately had some problems with my win-xp (home) following installation/ un-installation of daemon tools that corrupted some registry files. After an unsuccesfull repair-instalation of xp, i re-installed xp onto the secondary partition of my hard drive (d:, the original instalation being on c. I was intending to format the c: drive, then instal a copy of xp-pro i have onto it
finally moving the files i want to keep back from the d: drive onto the c: drive. The problem i'm now having is on formatting i recieve the error message 'system partition is not allowed to be formatted', as it is the primary partition. Can i go about formatting this drive in partitions and proceed with the re-install without having to remove the files i have on the d: drive? How might i go about this?

I reinstalled Windows XP Pro over the current version as I was having problems. I did a complete install instead of a repair, wasn't paying attention. I did make a complete backup of my hard drive prior to reinstalling. I now do not see any of the files or modem setups in my start menu. What files do I need to copy from the backup instead of having to reload all the programs from scratch?

I have a friend who has a pentium 2 350 which is currently running on Windows 98SE...yikes!My friend has been complaining that their computer has been running slow and that pop ups are appearing everywhere. I told them that it sounds like their computer has been hijacked and that I would recommend that they format their computer and start from fresh.I want to format their computer and install a newer windows OS (perhaps windows xp) and install a couple of spyware/antivirus programs.

The registry on one of my computers is corrupt and if I try to copy the files from the WindowsRepair folder using the windows system repair tool, I'm told the files cannot be found. One possible solution I thought of is using the registry files from my other computer running Windows XP. I don't even know if this is possible, but if it is, how can I transfer the files. I would put them on a CD but the CD drive won't open when the system repair tool is running, and they're too big to fit on a floppy disk, even one at a time (the system and software files are both over 2mb.)

I need to copy all files on a local drive to a network drive once a week. I want to be able to do this using a batch file that I can have Windows scheduler execute. This means the use of the Windows Backup utility is not possible. However, program suggestions that have a cloning ability with no compression and does not create its own file can be used.

When booting from an old Windows 98 bootdisk to install Windows XP (with slipstreamed SP1) I allways got this message: "Setup was unable to copy cdrom.sys".The problem was known at Microsoft (knowledge base) and they even got a solution for it (dude!).In the config.sys on your disk there will be a line somewhat like this: "device= /d:cdrom" simply change the cdrom to something else like : "device=..... /d:DVDRAM" and it will work.

I really messed up my computer. I think I deleted a necessary Service. I searched high & low at Microsoft Support & all over the internet, but everthing I do to try to fix the problem only brings me to another error message or another function that does not work properly. I don't think I have a virus or any other malicious software because I scanned my computer a day or 2 before this happened & it was clean.
My taskbar/start menu has disappeared, system restore won't work, I am unable to make any chages to my system services, safe mode is working just as bad as regular startup, many programs do not work properly including internet explorer and more. I am almost surprised I am able to post this. I have pretty much given up on trying to restore my necessary service(s) or restore my computer to my last restore point. I decided to burn some files/folders to my disk drive and then re-format my computer. But I have run into another problem. I am unale to cut, copy, paste, drag, drop, move or send files/folders to another location on my computer, including my CD-R drive. I am able to select cut, copy, sent to, etc, but nothing happens after I do.

I have just started experiencing this problem after installing a new backup hard drive.
I am searching a large folder of mp3 files to copy to my mp3 player.Periodically and seemingly at random the folder I am searching through resets. That is it blinks and shifts back to the top of the folder. So I then have to remember where I was and find the place that I left off.

I'm using an SD card for a Palm Pilot T|X and I'm copying files back and forth frequently using an SD reader, but I'm starting to get a couple of error messages (in XP, not on the actual Palm) while copying files FROM the SD card (not TO the card, I'm copying TO the card just fine). For example, if I copy specific mp3 files, I get this error message- Cannot Copy *filename*: The parameter is incorrect. The weird thing is that only certain mp3 files do this while others copy just fine. The weirder thing is I can play the file in Winamp directly from the card just fine. Yet other messages pop up with different files. Sometimes I get that specific message with another file, but I also get this one--
Cannot copy *filename*: Cannot read from the source file or disk I've noticed that the first one is far more common than the second. I've also noticed that the second can be fixed by safe-removing the SD card and reinserting it (up until now, I haven't been safe-removing, which I now suspect may be the source of the problem). I've also noticed that I can't copy files from my card to my Palm's internal memory using FileZ, but that may be unrelated (also, I know that this isn't a Palm forum anyway; I'm mainly asking about my problem within XP).

If I access "My Pictures" on WXP, I can copy pictures to a CD-RW without any problem. If I try to use the "Copy" command to copy a folder such as my Quicken Data files, I receive a message that the disc is not formatted or it may be corrupted. If I use the disk "that may be corrupted" I can copy pictures to it and then erase them. Why won't data files copy? Am I going about it the wrong way?

When I try to copy files to a DVD+RW it puts them into some kind of temporary files and then tells me it's ready to copy them to the CD. But it won't let me copy them to a DVD, seems to be looking for a CD. Why must I wait for these temporary files to be created. I was once able to start the copying and it would copy them with no delay. Is there some way to bypass this creation of temporary files and just begin the copying immediately?

I've had XP installed 9 months and working great. Yesterday while looking at EBAY, the screen went black, and the computer locked up.Thru trials, I ended up reformating the HD and starting from scratch. XP starts the installation and at 37 minutes left to install, everything freezes. I have to restart and XP installation begins again at about 47 minutes left to install, then at 37 minutes left to finish, the system locks again, and again, again, and again, at 37 minutes to finish.

computer started to run very poorly: lagging, freezing up, windows end task etc finnaly one day it would not go into desktop. would only give option to start in normal mode or safe mode. so i tried starting in both but would only restart into the same option screen.I decided it was best to format harddrive and reload windows. insert windows disk and proceeded to format partition and reinstall windows. it formats all that way to 90 % and then states cannot format partition further, harddrive problems and to trouble shoot manual. tried quick format and repair but still nothing.tried restarting without reinstall disk. says cant access OS of course!
