Copy Of Xp Professional Be Used For Installation Microsoft Pro
Jan 5, 2005
Windows was installed OEM and Windows XP Pro CD came with the laptop, now that the CD has been lost.
Can I use other copy of Microsoft Windows XP Professional to re-install Windows? (I still have the serial key number from the original OEM disk)

When I last installed Microsoft Windows XP Professional on my computer, it automatically installed the files and directories within the "C:WINDOWS" folder. Now, is there a way that I can choose to change that directory name when I next install?I know it's fussy, but I want to change the directory name to lower-case in way of "C:Windows". Is there a way to do it when I do a new installation?

Last year I purchased a copy of XP Professional on eBay. Prior to that, I purchased Windows 2000 Professional from Best Buy - it was a legal copy and I still have it.I wanted to upgrade/change to XP so I was hoping to get a less expensive purchase via eBay. Everything was fine with it until this week when I tried to download an upgrade to Windows Media Player 10. My licenses were out of wack and when I called Microsoft for support, they told me it was an OEM version and they didn't support those versions. I had no idea I purchased an OEM version. I want a legal copy of XP and don't want to have to reformat my harddrive. Since XP Professional is already on my computer, if I "re-buy" the op-sys, can I load it over this OEM version? Or do I have to reformat?

During the initial Windows XP setup, is it possible to copy the files from the CDROM to the HDD and then continue installation from the HDD? I have seen this done with Windows 98 via the command prompt, assuming it can be done with XP aswell, but after looking through Microsoft.com for 5 minutes I gave up searching

Have a laptop that i got in 2003 and i bought microsoft office pro with it. well my laptop is having problems and i have an extended warranty on it, the company said that the harddrive might have to be formated and i should backup everything. since my laptop didn't come with office and the cd got lost with the move to college, is there a way to copy the office program files? what im talking about is how with a game you can copy the folder .programs files/ea games/need for speed. like that and if you copy that folder to another computer it will work without having to be installed. i know its not in the registry.

I reinstalled Windows XP Pro over the current version as I was having problems. I did a complete install instead of a repair, wasn't paying attention. I did make a complete backup of my hard drive prior to reinstalling. I now do not see any of the files or modem setups in my start menu. What files do I need to copy from the backup instead of having to reload all the programs from scratch?

I initially had a problem with java after installing a SP2 update for IE. And eventually reinstalled XP, that didn't correct the issue and then I had to get a new product code because I was in the "you have 30 days to activate" loop even though my copy of XP was already activated. So called Microsoft, got new product key and started to install again. This is when I first got the "Unable to copy files" error. I tried 2 different copies of XP but got the same issue, with the same files, with each disk.I've talked to Microsoft for hours, and finally had a guy tell me it was my motherboard (now this is after having swapped out my memory with the manufacturer). I just received my replacement board (M7NCD by Biostar) and I am still getting the same error. The gist is that at the dsound3d.dll, I start to get "unable to copy file" errors. I attempt to retry the copy, which works occasionally, but eventually I get an error (normally a memory error) Microsoft had said that even with those errors, it wasn't my memory but my motherboard that was the issue

I have been having the following problem off and on for some time:
When I try to copy/paste files and folders in windows XP explorer (or in the desktop or a program's dialog box), windows wants to re-install one of the programs I have already installed on my computer or that I installed once upon a time.
Currently this is happening with Roxio Easy media Creator 7, but in the past it has happened with many other programs, such as MS Office, Roxio and some other shareware programs.

During installation I get a note regarding Genuine Windows Validation. Upon hitting continue I am forwarded to the Windows Genuine Advantage program where I receive the message Validation Complete!. If I then return to the install screen I am told the installation was interrupted and that I should restart the installer. Unfortunately every time I do this I get the same result. I've no problems with anything else from Microsoft including normal windows updates. PC is perfectly genuine and direct from DELL.

I have heard when attempting to upgrade not clean install a new os. For example the whole win98 to w2k doesnt fly good because of the fat32 to ntfs deal. so what about upgrading w2k pro with ntfs to xp pro with ntfs? is this a good thing to do now a days or is it still better to just perform a clean install over my existing os. I really would like to keep my stuff intact, but I dont want a xp upgrade. So what type of issues have you guys had upgrading w2k to xp pro?

i have windows XP home edition service pack 3. and i use Microsoft office 2003, and well recently it began to pop up and say microsoft office word has not been installed for current user. please run setup utility. Well i only have one user, never had another user created until recently (temporary fix) is there anything i can do, the main user is called the owner, it says its the computer admin, but i guess there is still an admin user, i cant get to that. the only way i can get ms office to work was to create a new user, open all the office programs, export the office registry, and import it to my main user, thats the only thing that works, for a little bit.

Quote :NEW YORK (Reuters) -- A U.S. federal jury found that Microsoft Corp. infringed audio patents held by Alcatel-Lucent and should pay $1.52 billion in damages, the No. 1 software maker said Thursday.
Microsoft said it plans to first ask the trial judge to knock down the ruling and will appeal if necessary. It said the verdict is unsupported by the law and that it had already licensed the technology in question from Germany's Fraunhofer.
Alcatel-Lucent had accused the world's biggest software maker of infringing patents related to standards used for playing MP3 digital music files.

After an unsuccesfull repair-instalation of xp, i re-installed xp onto the secondary partition of my hard drive (d:, the original instalation being on c. I was intending to format the c: drive, then instal a copy of xp-pro i have onto it
finally moving the files i want to keep back from the d: drive onto the c: drive. The problem i'm now having is on formatting i recieve the error message 'system partition is not allowed to be formatted', as it is the primary partition. Can i go about formatting this drive in partitions and proceed with the re-install without having to remove the files i have on the d: drive? How might i go about this?

I started up the computer, watched the BIOS detect the RAM, hard drive, etc, and then was greeted by a blank screen instead of the Windows boot screen. It proceeded though, and after a few seconds flashed to another black screen, this time displaying the cursor. I'm guessing this is the logon screen, but nothing displays but the cursor. (Note that the video card and monitor are both fine...I tried swapping them out just in case.)

I just built my first computer and I don't have an OS yet. I do have 2 copies on Win XP Home Edition that I found that I may or may not have installed yet.I was going to buy the Win 7 Professional Upgrade online from digital river. It comes with a download for your computer and a disk kit for 13 dollars more that they ship to you. Thing is, this will be a CLEAN INSTALL on a brand new terabyte hard drive. I have read about people doing clean installs with the DISK of Win 7 Upgrade Media, but it seems too complicated. I also know that the best way to upgrade Win XP to Win 7 was to do a clean install and backup your files. But im not going to have anything stored on Win XP.I want to install Win XP Home Edition, connect to the internet, download the Win 7 upgrade media. And install that.

When I restart the computer, it goes to a screen that gives me 2 options. Windows XP Home, which is what I use and Windows XP Professional Setup.I dont know how the Professional Setup got on there but it is always highlighted as the selection, so if I reboot and go away from the computer it goes into the Setup which doesnt work, and then I have to reboot again. I;ve never had this until recently, and need to know how to get rid of the Professional Setup one so I can just use regular XP. I've done a search for the setup so i could delete it but nothing came up.
