During the initial Windows XP setup, is it possible to copy the files from the CDROM to the HDD and then continue installation from the HDD? I have seen this done with Windows 98 via the command prompt, assuming it can be done with XP aswell, but after looking through Microsoft.com for 5 minutes I gave up searching
View 8 RepliesWhen booting from an old Windows 98 bootdisk to install Windows XP (with slipstreamed SP1) I allways got this message: "Setup was unable to copy cdrom.sys".The problem was known at Microsoft (knowledge base) and they even got a solution for it (dude!).In the config.sys on your disk there will be a line somewhat like this: "device= /d:cdrom" simply change the cdrom to something else like : "device=..... /d:DVDRAM" and it will work.

Windows XP Home, which is what I use and Windows XP Professional Setup.I dont know how the Professional Setup got on there but it is always highlighted as the selection, so if I reboot and go away from the computer it goes into the Setup which doesnt work, and then I have to reboot again. I;ve never had this until recently, and need to know how to get rid of the Professional Setup one so I can just use regular XP. I've done a search for the setup so i could delete it but nothing came up.

Prior to that, I purchased Windows 2000 Professional from Best Buy - it was a legal copy and I still have it.I wanted to upgrade/change to XP so I was hoping to get a less expensive purchase via eBay. Everything was fine with it until this week when I tried to download an upgrade to Windows Media Player 10. My licenses were out of wack and when I called Microsoft for support, they told me it was an OEM version and they didn't support those versions. I had no idea I purchased an OEM version. I want a legal copy of XP and don't want to have to reformat my harddrive. Since XP Professional is already on my computer, if I "re-buy" the op-sys, can I load it over this OEM version? Or do I have to reformat?

I get this cyclic redundancy check error when I try to copy files from a DVD-RW onto my hard drive. I burnt said DVD about two years ago using Cyberlink DVD Solution Power2Go. I get this error with mulitiple DVDs, but not all of them (I've got five and I get this error with only three). Also, I get the error with some files, but not others (on the same DVD). I really can't lose these files! My guess is they were burnt wrong, but I'm really not sure. Is there any way I can recover these files?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've setup Windows 2003 fax services on a W2K3 server and shared the device. I've tested faxing from Word on my PC and it works fine.However, when other users try to install the fax client, the setup hangs asking for the fx* setup files. I've tried different XPSP2 CDs, copying the files to a local directory, making sure that the users have local admin rights (and even domain admin rights) but to no avail. The files are already in the system32 directory so in theory the setup doesn't even need to copy them. Even if I delete them, it doesn't work.Our corporate SMS team reckons that there isn't any policy which could
cause the problem.
I reecently installed Vista on my computer to try it out and after a few weeks wanted to change back to XP Pro as has some things i did not like.
Here's what i did:
1. I booted into BIOS and changed the bootup to cd/dvd.
2. Booted with my Original CP PRO cd (Not bought with my computer bought after).
3. followed the instructions and deleted the partition on C and formatted (Full not Quick) the C: drive with NTFS.
It gets to the stage that the SETUP is copying files and after 43% and says it cannot copy file WOWEB.exe and to press Esc to skip, F3 to QUIT and ENTER to try again.
It does this with a whole lot of files (Over 30) then after skipping thise files it reboots and gets the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!!.
I have 2 DVD drives and tried both with the same result. I tried a differant Windows XP disk with the same results.
The motherboard has a backup facility which i had backed up previously with XP but not fully and can restore to that point but i want a complete reinstall.
I have formatted and installed windows XP with that disc loads of times without any problems before.
what should i do?
I am reformatting and reinstalling Windows XP Home in my dell inspiron 600m and I got the following error during the installation:
Setup cannot copy the file vga.dll.
Anyone know how to fix it? What happens if I choose to ignore the warning and install the Windows anyway?
Had to reformat my drive and now whenever i use my win xp sp2 install disc...i first format the drive and create the proper partition..the windows disc then starts copying files to the computer but at a point i get an error message saying that windows setup cannot copy the file...and it tells me which file. I redid this several times and each time at a some point in the copying it gives me this error...each time with a different file name

I've got a message popped up that says I need to install XP service pack 3.
I let it install, but it gets stcuk on the following error:

It gives the path for the file as:

I've checked in the path and the file definitely exists.
The message below the error says:

This message does not make much sense to me.
Is there a particular application running that could be stopping access to this file?
I've tried closing down all applications: but still no joy.

I have been reading up on getting a xp setup to work on a usb. On alot of websites it says to copy the i386 folder. On my setup cd i see that it has a amd64 folder. My computer is an amd so do i copy the amd64 instead of the i386? Is the i386 only for intel and amd64 for amd?

The only driver present although I don’t need RAID I have booted my computer with my windows XP CD in. Then pressed F6 when prompted. I then put my floppy disc in with the driver on and press "S" I then select "AMD AHCI Compatible RAID Controller-x86 platform" and press enter.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe registry on one of my computers is corrupt and if I try to copy the files from the WindowsRepair folder using the windows system repair tool, I'm told the files cannot be found. One possible solution I thought of is using the registry files from my other computer running Windows XP. I don't even know if this is possible, but if it is, how can I transfer the files. I would put them on a CD but the CD drive won't open when the system repair tool is running, and they're too big to fit on a floppy disk, even one at a time (the system and software files are both over 2mb.)

I had to remove malware at first (can't remember the name) and had to install msconfig as 2000 did not have this feature. Now upon booting up, a window pops up with the above message, however upon clicking on the small x to close the window, then computer boots up and she uses it. Nothing else happens. I decided to go into the WINN file and found a folder (drivers) and actually saw the little driver file "asc3559f" and was going to simply remove it by copying it to another folder, shutting down and trying to reboot but must admit, I chickendd out. She lives about 100 miles from me so I didn't want to cause trouble and left it alone and I am now beginning to think since it boots after closing the pop up window; leave well enough alone.

Then it says ot run a virus scan and chk disk etc but I can't get into normal or safe mode to do that, when you press F8 to get into safemode it comes up and you press enter then the next screen for windows you press enter then it ends up back at the blue screen witht the error again.
When trying to install Windows XP Pro I get the following error message "Setupdd.sys cannot be loaded error 14. Setup can not continue. Press any key to exit."
Anybody have any ideas how to solve this?
On many occasions when I try to install various programs the Installshield wizard starts running and withing 1-2 seconds after the initial screen the program disappears with no errors or anything. I can never get the program or driver installed.
View 14 Replies View RelatedMy nieces were playing Hercules on their older genetic computer when the monitor screen flipped. Now everything is upside down. We tried rebooting and only the initial intel logo is displayed correctly for a couple of seconds and then the windows screen comes on upside down. Any ideas on how to fix this? As I mentioned, it's an older unit with Windows XP installed.
