whenever I boot the system, I come up with the following message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>system32 toskrnl.exe re-install a copy of the above file. every time I try to boot the CD, the same error message occurs. I've already tried to change the boot order so the CD-ROM drive would be first. I have also selected the CD-ROM drive to be the boot device, but the message always pops up.

During the initial Windows XP setup, is it possible to copy the files from the CDROM to the HDD and then continue installation from the HDD? I have seen this done with Windows 98 via the command prompt, assuming it can be done with XP aswell, but after looking through Microsoft.com for 5 minutes I gave up searching

I restarted Windows (XP PRO), and it hung on the reboot
before getting to the Win logo. I rebooted again and again and it
never progressed to Windows. Nothing had been troubling before this.
I tried booting from the Windows CD, but got the following error:
Inf file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing, status 32768. Setup
cannot continue. Press any key to exit.
Any suggestions?

Here goes, the other day I booted up my PC and it showed "windows can not boot, ntfs.sys is missing or corrupt" so I did this. Microsoft support. I replaced the file in the recovery console and everything copied over fine. Then I booted up again and I received an error message before windows displayed my login screen --lsass.exe "endpoint is invalid" click ok and my computer reboots. Windows at that time was booting all the way up though. I found this support article but did not help Microsoft support This error does not allow me to boot into safe mode or regular windows but I can get into the recovery console.

Dell Inspiron 9100, 1 GB mem, 60 GB HD, Win XP Home 2002 SP3. Kept clean with TE Pro, cseraser, syswiper, Adaware, Spybot S&D, AWC V2, Regcure, RegscrubXP. McAfee current. Win XP SP's and updates current.
Boot failed after POST with (as near as I can remember, sorry!) "missing or corrupt HAL.DLL"
This has happened twice. The first time it happened (a year or so ago), I reinstalled XP. I also installed
a second installation of Win XP in a WINDOWS2 dir. Set up boot.ini to allow me to select WINDOWS or WINDOWS2 to boot from. Figured this would help if it happened again.

As the title says my pci.sys in the system32drivers folder is missing or is corrupt, so I can't boot windows. The only possible solution is to start the recovery console and type:set AllowAllPaths = true expand d:i386pci.sy_ c:windowssystemdrivers32 If you don't type set AllowAllPaths = true you can't access the windows folder, thus I cannot fic the pci.sys. Well the problem is I don't have the Set command enabled, and It can only be enabled with MMC, but how the hell am I supposed to enable the Set command when I cant access MMC? Dilemma >.< don't wanna reinstall Windows XP again... So is there a way to get Set AllowAllPaths = true to work without MMC?

I'm getting the System32driverspci.sys missing or corrupt message when trying to boot XP.Now, I've tried going to my recovery console and tryed "expand drive:i386pci.sy_ C:winntsystem32drivers /y" all I get is access denied. So then I re-booted from my XP disk and pressed enter to install windows xp. Now supposedly I sould get a repair "r" option, but I don't. It tells me I need to format to install. I guess when you recived that "r" option it will bring you the option of typing the admin passsword so I won't get the access denied message when I'm expanding. The bottom line is that there is one REALLY important folder I need of my C: drive and really don't care about anything else.

XP PRO SP2- Recieve the following message upon unsuccessful boot attempt. "WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT: <WINDOWS ROOT> SYSTEM32HAL.DLL (not yelling ) I have tried to boot from my xp pro cd to utilize the recover utility however the computer will not boot from the cd. I able to use a dos boot disk however my keyboard is USB and I cannot find USB drivers to work under dos, so I was unable to do anything at that point. It was my hope that I could work through dos to edit the boot.ini file.
I do not want to reinstall windows. If I have to I will place the hard drive in another computer as a slave and work on it that way but I'd rather not. The only other tower type computer I have other then laptops is running xp home SP2.

Early last week I ran a Windows update on my Compaq SR1625NX and upon restart it would not boot Windows. I tried "last good configuration", "debug mode" and "safe mode" to no avail. It always restarts while booting Windows. I tried both the built-in "recovery console" and the recovery discs I bought from HP/Compaq upon the advise of an online support person. When loading the recovery console either way the blue screen pops up and tells me there is a problem with the "ntfs.sys" file.

I have an old computer with an Intel Celeron 467 MHz processor, 128 ram and I'm running Windows XP SP2. Earlier this week I came to turn on my computer, and could not log on to Windows. "Windows could not start because the follwing file is missing or corrupt Windowssystem32configsystem." I reinstalled XP. I couln't access the repair install. Then I thought maybe someone had gotten into my computer and I downloaded Zone Alarm...Big mistake. Since then my computer freezes, programs jam, I keep losing my internet connection,(DSL) and I get "cannot find server" messages. Its also slower as molasses in winter. A little better since the removal. Obviously Zone Alarm was removed and i went back to Windows firewall. I also use Ad-Aware, AVG, Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster and I use Registry Mechanic and TuneUp Utilities.

This is a NEC ND-3520AW. Worked fine until ? I don't think I installed anything or saw any other contributing factor.
1. The main problem is if I insert a known good CD, when I open the drive which is the D drive in this case it shows no contents. If I take the same CD to another computer and open it I see folders, files, etc.
2. I can write to the drive on a CDR or CDRW fine using Nero.
3. I can boot from the drive using an Ubuntu or other boot disk.

(Code 41)", i've tried every trick i know but like i said i'm not good with windows, so any advice is much appricated, THe dvd-rw is an Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-104 and the other is ASUS CD-S400/A.

She has auto updates turned on for her WindowsXP Home, so when SP 2 was released she got it installed.
Since then neither CD drive has worked. So I went over last night to help her. Dell has a pretty handy little maintenance utility partition that you can access from the bootup menu. It has some little self tests and such for verifying hardware. It is able to read the drives fine, so no hardware issues there. If I boot to the recovery console, the drives will talk. But if I boot to windows I get an error code 31 in the device manager and the don't load.Prior to this morning I didn't know about the UpperFilters and LowerFilters settings that can fix this very issue. At the time I figured something had just gotten screwed up with SP2. I have an XP Home with SP2 cd, so I tried to do a repair installation.
