I have a system that operates on Windows NT 4.0 Workstation. It's a fairly old computer, more than 5 years. During the night the fan in the powersupply stopped working, so the computer over heated. When I came to work in the morning it had the blue death screen of gibberish.I rebooted and it doesn't go through the whole boot up sequence but gives the following message:Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <winnt root>system32 toskrnl.exe Please re-install a copy of the above file.

After the boot loader phase, the server stops in the kernel load phase and issues the following error message: Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows 2000 root>system32 toskrnl.exe I do not have any ERD (Emergency Rescue Disks) and when I use the original Windows Server CD, I got to the Recovery Console but wont work

This fault occurs on my brothers Win Xp machine, with the machine going round in the usual startup loop and never getting to windows. When booting from the XP cd, he can't use the recovery utility, because he can't remember the Administrators password. On one occassion in the recovery utility, we somehow managed to start windows (really don't know how, because it hasn't worked since).
I can open up the recovery console with my winxp disc, but not long enough to fix the problem. My computer will shut down.I originally thought that it might have been an overheating issue, but i ran Sandra and all temps came up under 40 cel. I can not seem to keep my computer booted long enough to fix anything. It will stay booted as long as it is on the choice option of the Windows XP cd to install, repair or exit.
I learned here that it might be a keyboard issue, replaced it with one known to be good and it didn't work. After some more fumbling around looking for a solution, I unplugged the HDD and plugged in the other HDD I have on the system with a separate installation of Win XP Pro and got the exact same error, even though I know for a fact it was working the last time I had it plugged in and it has not been plugged in since then.
I have had my Dell computer for about a month. When I boot up I get a message saying that I can't boot up because <windows root> System32NTOSKRNL.EXE is missing or corrupt. I get the same thing for system32DRIVERS NTFS.SYS.

A client w/a laptop tried to boot his PC and got the error that the ntoskrnl.exe was missing. Is this a candidate for repair install or is it possible to copy the file from CD back to its original folder?

I have a Rock CTX Pro with Windows XP Pro, service pack 3, 2.33 GHZ dual core. When loading my computer, after getting to the loading windows page, it brings up an error message that says: The following file is missing or corrupt: Windowssystem32configSYSTEM
I have an old computer with an Intel Celeron 467 MHz processor, 128 ram and I'm running Windows XP SP2. Earlier this week I came to turn on my computer, and could not log on to Windows. "Windows could not start because the follwing file is missing or corrupt Windowssystem32configsystem." I reinstalled XP. I couln't access the repair install. Then I thought maybe someone had gotten into my computer and I downloaded Zone Alarm...Big mistake. Since then my computer freezes, programs jam, I keep losing my internet connection,(DSL) and I get "cannot find server" messages. Its also slower as molasses in winter. A little better since the removal. Obviously Zone Alarm was removed and i went back to Windows firewall. I also use Ad-Aware, AVG, Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster and I use Registry Mechanic and TuneUp Utilities.

whenever I boot the system, I come up with the following message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>system32 toskrnl.exe re-install a copy of the above file. every time I try to boot the CD, the same error message occurs. I've already tried to change the boot order so the CD-ROM drive would be first. I have also selected the CD-ROM drive to be the boot device, but the message always pops up.
I have a desktop pc with XP Home Edition. It's an HP and it looks like there are two operating systems on it. One is the regular XP Home Edition load and the other seems to be the Recovery one if you run the Recovery utility that HP offers at boot up. I'm not sure what to do to fix this. If I try to run the recovery from HP it says that some data might be lost which I do not want. Is there any way to fix this hal.dll file using some type of utility disk? Or any other way?
I was on my computer today, programs started freezing up, eventually windows crashed. When rebooting I got the message I put in the subject title line "windows could not start because the following file windowssystem32configsystem is missing or corrupt".
Windows crashed on my PC, on reboot I get an error message,"WindowsSystem32ConfigSystem corrupt or missing"So I search around on my laptop and find handy registry repair walkthrough on the windows site. I pop in my windows xp cd and enter the repair console. Now, the instructions say I should be prompted to enter an admin password, but I am not promted, instead I just get to the command prompt."C:>"So I type in the first command on the list "md tmp" to make a temp file for the repair and then..."Access is Denied"
When left for a while (about half an hour), I come back to it and see that the screen is black with something about a system disk error. I experienced this before I had to re-install windows a few weeks back. The first time, I pressed enter, and the system started up fine. The second time, the secondary loading screen (that's what I call it...it's like little white rectangles at the bottom of a black screen...you know the ne, right?). Well yeah that goes really really slow. When it get's a few inches in, it stops and tells me 'system32driverstfs.sys is missing or corrupt'.

When booting up the laptop with win xp pro sp2, we first get the message hal.dll missing and then if enter past that we then get ntoskrnl.exe missing. Nothing has been uninstalled and the last thing to be installed was adobe. The only things ran recently was microsoft spyware and mcafee virus scanner and now it will not boot at all without these 2 files.
