I had some freezing on my Dell notebook due to a updated driver that froze the machine. After wits end I decided to perform a repair from the the XP pro disc. All the files copied with out any pop messages. After the restart it froze on the first Windows screen in which the squares go across the bar

when i turned my on my pc everything was fine, i update and ran "ad-awareSE" to check my pc, it remove 3 files, finished.
then i launch "disk clean up" which is provided my windows orignally, to clean up my pc, i select everything on the list and i click ok so it would start removing the files, but then something strange happened.
as 'disk clean up' starts cleaning my system i noticed it's taking alot longer than usual, then all of a sudden a horrifying message pops up:
warning: system files found in windows have been change or have been replace by an unknown source, current system files are unstable and will cause stability issues, please insert "WINDOWS XP installation cd" into a cd rom drive, set up will fresh replace current files with ones from windows xp cd.-----
i click cancel and it warns me that my system will become unstable, no more warning message have pop up UNTIL i launch "disk clean up" again, i once again select everything in the list and click ok so it could began cleaning my system.
then the same message pops up again.
i decided to do what it tells me, i took out my windows XP SP2 cd, put it in the cd rom drive, and soon windows start reading the cd WHILE disk clean up starts cleaning my system.
there's no message telling me that windows is repairing my system files, all i see is "disc clean up" cleaning my pc AND AT THE SAME TIME my cd rom drive is reading my winXP cd.
after it's all over, i tdidn't tell me to restart my pc, but i did anyway and after that i ran 'disk clean up' and i didn't notice anything strange in windows, i ran 'disk clean up' again, and there was no more warning message, i ran disk cleanup for a few more times and everything was ok.
i first thought maybe it was because of a hacker attacking my pc and messing up my system files, but that's not possible becasue i activated "block traffic" in norton firewall 2005, plus i already updated norton antivirius 2005 with the latest definition, and use ad-aware to remove all tracs of spyware, so really, what what happen back then, what's wrong with my pc?
how can i solve this?
I recently had some problems with some viruses and stuff and my system was still a bit "off" even after I removed them. Luckily I have Acronis True image and was able to revert back to a nice state of operation. As nice and clean as my system is right now I find that not everything is still not hunky. Some fonts stay the wrong sizes and other cosmetic things, so I have decided I should also run the Windows XP repair option again just to make everything right. My question is..What can I expect after I run it? Will all of my applications stilll function etc?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just got the trial version of XP x64. I have a 64-bit processor and TuneUp utilities recommends I upgrade to x64. I have a couple of concerns, though. First, just because I have a 64-bit processor does not necessarily mean I have 64-bit drivers and 64-bit compatible programs, does it? Second, if I install the trial version and the trial ends; what then? Will I just go back to XP Pro or will I have sold my soul and be forced to purchase the full version?

I don't even know if it's bootable?anyways, then I tried installing from Windows itself, which I later read was something I shouldn't have done.The install was going well, then it rebooted the PC. Now, I see an option to boot the XP cd.Specifically, before, I only had options to boot Windows XP Home and go into the Windows Recovery Console.I chose the XP setup and tried to delete the C: drive, but it said I couldn't. Then, I tried to delete the D: drive, and it worked. I tried once again to delete the C: drive to no prevail. So, I thought I'd restart the PC to see if it would change.And then it happened. It didn't start up with the XP setup option nor does it boot Windows. It just loops inself to the Windows XP Home logo, restart, rinse and repeat.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running XP pro with SP2.It's a fairly new computer which hadn't been connected to the internet since yesterday.So once it was on the internet i just let it freely download updates from Windows Update.When I tried to open something on my desktop i got a Blue Screen of Death. After restarting i sent the error report and it actually came up with a solution (shocker) that it was my firewall program, Outpost Firewall. After installing the update that it told me to everything went downhill from there. Everytime I restart the computer and log on i get the error report and when i click anything, explorer ends and doesnt restart (unless i use task manager to restart it). The only way around this is for me to just move the error report box out of the way, but now i cant use windows explorer at all.
Anytime i try to open, say, My Documents from the start menu, the taskbar will freeze for a few minutes. Anytime i try to use the Open function from any other program, that program will just shutdown with no warning whatsoever. I've only been able to open this internet explorer window because i just happen to know what the string is to open it in task manager.Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. I can paste the error report if you wish. Just ask for it, but i can tell you that there are 60 Module errors by looking at it.When i click the start menu and right click anything, the Open and Explore options all appear in lower case, which isn't mean to happen if i remember correctly
I was using Latitude D600 and Latitude D620. After completeing a Repair install of Windows XP, Windows update will not install. I didn't get any error messages. It downloads all of the updates but fails to install.

It hung on a screen immediately after the Windows XP scroll, it went to a blue screen with a "Windows XP" on it, where normally I see the WELCOME screen before Windows and the desktop appears. So the stall came at a SECOND Windows XP screen. After researching on the Net and talking to a couple of friends, and failing to get into Windows in Safe Mode (it stalled again at the same place), I started a Windows Repair reinstall.

Dell sent me a replacement but when it is inserted the "cannot continue since the version of XP on your system is newer than the one on the cd" message. I know a new cd can be made that will include the SP3 update with it. But to do this isn't the original cd with the product key required I still have the product key but am having trouble continuing.
View 2 Replies View RelatedXP fails to start in any mode. XP has been reloaded from an image with no change in situation. (I was reimaging the machines anyway.) I have not yet had a successful boot since reimaging, and hence XP (mini)setup has not completed (the image was prepared using sysprep to allow it to be rolled out to multiple machines. These machines are connected to an 2003 AD Domain). Currently I'm running memtest86+ from Knoppix. Knoppix booted with only one error about not passing in proper display information. (Perhaps the graphics card is going?). The last file loaded in a safe mode bootup is mup.sys, which leads me further to believe that it's a hardware problem (and that's backed up by Google).
I've opened it up, cleaned it out with a little (make that a lot) of compressed air. Boy, was it dusty. I forgot to mention, this computer is at a high school, if you want an idea of what the users are like . It's a magnet/gifted/selective enrollment (for you Chicago people) high school though. Any suggestions on things to try? I didn't see anything obviously wrong on the motherboard: that is, no exploded capicitors, disconnected cables, missing RAM, etc. I'm running memtest now, however we won't know the results of that until tomorrow. I'm going to swap out the HD with a different one and we'll see if that's any better.
Recently , even after a morning start up, IE7 fails to view and an error box pops ups. The one that asks you if you want to send an error report. If I restart again it's 50/50 to get to see IE7 working. Not sure if this is related, but in the evnet viewer I've noticed event ID's 1000 & 1001 are listed in the same times that this happens
View 6 Replies View RelatedI had no idea where to put this thread, but since I am running XP Home SP2 I put it here. EVERY picture I save in "My Pictures" ends up in the list of available wallpapers in the display properties. My other computer did not do this, I had to manual choose a particular pic from my folders and then I could use it as a wallpaper. The pictures were not just routed there by default like it seems to be doing now. My big issue is the list is now ridiculously long & I don't know how to stop them from going there & undo the ones that are already on the list.

So my final chance to get this system back up and running is to try and install a "retail version" XP Pro to a new hard drive.
Can you perform a 'full installation' from a product that is listed as "upgrade" I found what I feel is a good deal on eBay - the blurb states that you can (boot from CD drive) and then when promted just insert your original XP Home or WIN98 disk which sorts out the "key problem". I have listed what this Power Seller says - I have also emailed previous buyers who say it's a great product - legal etc. But these buyers had installed over a working copy of Windows 2000 and XP Home....
i am trying to do a repair install for windows XP.I have a message come up that says VIAAGP1.sys is required please type in the path and click ok.This is good and i know where the file is but My keyboard and mouse do not work so i cannot click or type in the box.the keyboard and mouse are ps2 and works in the BIOS but as soon as windows starts they stop responding.i cannot progress with the repair install with this problem.I have tried putting the driver disc in but the message still pops up.

I turned off auto updates and went to the site and click on custom and they came up but the same thing won't install did it with express install to and its the same,. Any one know what could be wring, one update it needs is the windows validation update I know the disk is valid it came with the machine and it retook the product number when I did the repair install.

Below that, it says "This software will not be installed...." If I click OK or turn off at this point, the pc reboots and restarts the setup program at 39 minutes remaining. After trying various workarounds with no sucess I ended up doing a repair install (was xp prof sp2). It fixed the explorer.exe problems, but now I have an even bigger headache on my hands.I cannot run Windows Update or IE, although I did download SP3 from download.com. I cannot install it though because it says it needs SP1. I tried installing SP1a, but it says it cannot verify update.inf and to turn on my Cryptographic services. When I try to turn that on, services wont open and produces an error message that says "MMC failed to intialize because it was installed incorrectly or because a portion of the registry has become corrupted. Make sure the file Mmcndmgr.dll is registered by running 'regsvr32 %SystemRoot%system32mmcndmgr.dll'. I try that it says that "Loadlibrary failed - the specific procedure could not be found." Oh, and I am constantly getting an error message which says "the procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll".
Started the pc w/the XP Home SP2 cd in, and followed prompts to do a repair install. All was going well. Got to the point of it needing to restart the computer. After the Windows logo appeared, received STOP error 7E, with no driver mentioned. (1st variable if needed is 0x0000006). Turned machine off, restarted. Same thing. Tried again, this time trying Safe Mode. I get the message "Setup cannot continue in Safe Mode, Click OK to restart".

My laptop is not loading up, after about 20secs it states "Disk read error occurred- CLT+ALT+DEL to restart.But it just happend again and again. I've been reading around and everyone is saying just use the xp install disk to repair the master boot, problem is I have moved that many time is the past 2years I have no idea where that CD is.I've downloaded DiskInternals Boot CD and it will start on this. But it wont actaully repair the disk, just scan it I've used diskcheck via cmd on the boot cd but it states there is a master boot registry failure.

I've done it before and I'm quite familiar with the steps, but this time there is one new wrinkle. Windows tells me it sees two partitions, which it shouldn't. There is only one, but it is comprised of two HDD's in a stripe setup. There is a total of 1.2TB of space between the two of them. The free space is somewhere in the 800-900 GB range before the machine started having problems. Windows keeps saying that there is only 900 MB of free space, which is not enough to install windows. Laughable. There is a ton of free space on those drives, and there is an existing XP installation, albiet one that doesn't work.

So I found the file that was corrupt online and copied it to the HDD.Now my problem is that the Windows repair install is giving me an error after it loads the install and comes up with the install screen.

I am suspicious that if I do this I am exposing myself to total destruction. One of the messages has just popped up again and the site it directs me to is FixReg32.com.
