My sister has given me her used laptop, telling me if I can make it work, it's all mine. The problem is, it never fully loads the desktop. You can't click anything or do anything else. She has lost her XP disk so I can't restore the system. I tried booting up in Safe Mode, but it still freezes on the desktop I am completely clueless on what to do. Is there any software available that could boot from a disk and do something?
View 4 RepliesWhenever I start my PC, 90 percent of the time it loads to the desktop but explorer.exe wont run. If I start Task Manager and run it from there, for the first few minutes an error pops up saying I don't have admin rights to access the file, but then later on it runs ok. But then, when it does load, only the volume control will load on the start bar, and if I try to access anything, (internet etc.) it doesnt work at all. Also my Folder Options in the Control Panel have disappeared, and Ive tried many ways to get it back, such as running gpedit, and it also wont let me access the registry, saying I dont have admin rights, even though I am the only user of the PC, and I have full admin rights. Sometimes it won't load at all, just booting to a black screen with the pointer stuck in the middle, and I have to restart it to get it to do anything.
If I run the computer in safe mode, the explorer bar has a 50/50 chance of loading on startup, and I still have the same problems. I ran Webroot Spy Sweeper, which picked a few spy cookies and whatnot, but nothing significant, but it seems to be getting progressively worse every time I restart the PC.The PC also refuses to boot the XP startup disk, cos I wanted to Repair Windows to see if that would fix the problem, and also trying to reset to default with BIOS and using MSCONFIG didnt work either. Im pretty sure Im forgetting something else that was quite important, but I cant remember what it is.... also System Restore has been wiped clean, so I cant restore my PC to an earlier time... I tried running a Virus scan using Virgin Media antivirus and Webroot Spy Sweeper Deep System Scan, but no luck, both just picked up minore spy cookie and stuff
recently my computer takes ages to get passed the Windows XP load screen. Sometimes the scrolling bars stop and it freezes before i it loads the desktop. It works if i safe boot it, but often it doesn't pass the Windows XP startup screen, or it takes a long time (approx 100s) to get passed it. Before it only took at most 10 seconds. It don't know why it's doing it. I've tried running a registry mechanic, prefetch cleaner and all that jazz.But it's still taking awhile to get passed that XP screen.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi ran some pretty complicated malware-removal programs since my PC (on the office network) was showing loads of trojans and other malware. in the order of running, i ran Malwarebytes, MGTools, Combofix with the windows recovery option. Then, on not having found anything substantial, I uninstalled Combofix with the /u optiom and deleted C:Combofix and later, proceeded to delete C:MGTools.The PC allows me to do a Ctrl+Alt+Del log in, and once I hit Return after entering the password, it just shows me the blue background to the desktop - No items, no menus.Same thing happens in safe mode.

Formated the drive, installed XP, it re-booted to continue the installation and then it hangs on a BSOD saying that my BIOS is not fully ACPI compatible. I am using an SATA drive. Specs: ASUS A8n-SLI 16 Deluxe, AMD 4200+X2 64 Dual Core, 250GB WD SATA drive, 2GB corsair 3200c2. I am thinking of just turning acpi off and then putting it back on once xp is on.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a new ECS 755-A2 board with a new Sempron CPU and a evga FX5200 AGP card. Nothing exotic or cutting edge. Everything seems to work OK, I can do all my normal tasks, everything looks great. New HDs, new PS, new install of XP Pro SP2. I can work for a couple of hours with no problems of any kind.At some point after just a few minutes of user inactivity, however, anything on the screen that happens to be moving, such as an animated "progress" bar, freezes for a second or two, then the screen goes black and the system crashes hard until reset/reboot. It's not merely the monitor going black, it's a full system lockup. If I have streaming audio going, say, it will stop at the same time. The system is fully crashed. IDE light is on permanently until reset. Keyboard input is ineffective.

I'm running Win XP Pro, SP2 and over the last couple of weeks we've gone from freezing up once every/every other day to freezing up multiple times a day and often not even getting fully through the start up process. finds the drive okk, but only recognizes approx 130 mb of the drive.
I currently have 2Gb (2x 1Gb sticks) DDR2 800 RAM in my system and saw an offer for the same RAM for 1/3 off the price I'd paid before so I decided to grab it while it was there. However, when I install the extra 2x 1Gb sticks the system won't boot fully and I don't know why. When I took them out and left the original 2x 1Gb sticks in the system works normally. I'm going to switch the sticks around to see if it's faulty RAM or bad RAM slots but it works fine in the BIOS and booting up. As soon as I enter Windows and login it the keyboard LED goes off, the mouse LED stays on and the system freezes. than switching the RAM out to test the slots on the motherboard?

Although the uninstallation seems to go OK from the screen messages, there is still an entry in the 'Program list' in Control Panel - I guess I can remove this using Tweak UI?More of a problem is that , after attempting uninstallation, I receive an error message on start up "Cannot find cmicnfg.cpl" which I understand to be a Control Panel problem.By using Everest I have identified the offending item and this is produced above.

XD it feels like i'm close to finally fixing the frickin thing, but i can't get past this. so if someone could please tell me how to get past it, i'll give a virtual pat on the back. oh, and it's a compaq windows XP.

It's so bothersome that I'm now using Notepad whenever possible but I'd much rather use Wordpad. I've scanned with several virus scanners and they all come up clean. Thanks

When I start my computer, there is a black screen with a loading bar at the bottom, which takes atleast five minutes to load. When I launch a game, it takes ages for it to start up and it also takes ages to join a server. I tried reformating, but it didn't help. When I was installing one of my games, I found that it took about 10 times as long to install. And while it was installing, I couldn't do anything else because it slowed everything down. It's like my RAM has been lowered or something. I am guessing it may be a hardware problem.
