I have windows xp. When I click on start, all prgrams - the list of programs shows up but alot of those folders are empy. Games, System tools, Microsoft Money, Microsoft Office Tools and many others are all empty. I apologize if this is a stupid question.I'm afraid I've done something by mistake to mess these folders up. Any help would be appreciated.
View 13 Repliesi just bought a new laptop. an HP pavilion if it helps. and having copied over some music from my old desktop to the laptop i tried to move 5gigs of music from one folder on the laptop to another one for ease of sorting. i pressed ctrl x and then ctrl v. it was copied ok as i saw it all in the folder. i closed the folder and opened itunes to add the folder to the library. it seemed to not have any music in it.. so then i tried to reopen the folder i just created with the music that was very definately in it. but it is now empty and i get Access is denied.. the music has dissappeared and doesnt appear on any searches i run. i cant delete/open/move or do anything to the now empty folder.it just coes up with D:music is not accessable. access is denied.the odd thing is that i have another 10 folders all empty and undeletable in another bit of my laptop that i want to delete as they are blocking me copying in an addon for WoW.as you can guess im not exactly a genius at this stuff. and just trying to tidy up my pc has resulted in several hours frustration and lots of swearing.

It is not clean it so I want compress a lot his files and folders and leave one to side for while till its safe to delete it all. I have permission to delete everything. But I am being a little cautious.The trouble is one of the directory is huge, about 20gb, with many subdirectories and folders. There many instances when whole list of folders are empty. There could be 100s or 1000s of these empty folders.Is there a freeware filemanager with a filter that I can use to isolate all the empty folders and delete them. And how would you use the filter. I would then be able to defrag the HD.
View 8 Replies View Relatedwhy the heck can't i remove the msn gaming zone, netmeeting and movie maker folder? whenever i use special programs designed to free up those working processes the folders just regenerate on restart - and when i delete them in safe mode same result - is it possible to remove these empty useless folders from windows xp sp 2?
i know it's due to windows file protection - but this is poor design - these folders are junk and aren't critical - it's my pc and if i know they are safe to delete windows should too - i don't want junk folders on my computer - my pc is spic and span and optimized and i want these folders gone forever - i know you can do it with a hex editor and replacing the new sp2 wfs dll with the old sp1 dll - but that also disables wfs entirely and that's not what i want - and whatever you do - do NOT use windows file protection switcher - it disagrees with the os and will cause the os to malfunction and you'll need to do a destructive recovery - that means you'll lose all your data from programs to tweaks

Would it be safe to delete it? I know it has something to do with the operating system.

When looking for some files, I tried to unhide a folder and it just made more folders disappear. I checked the Hidden folders option (in the properties window of the folder that contained the files I was looking for)
and the folder I was in became hidden. I cleared the box for hide folders but it is still hidden.

windows Xp dell xps 410, 250gb HDD, 500gb HDD, 3gb memory. I tried to defrag but that would not open. Tried system restore that wouldn't work. Thought maybe it was turned off but found it is on. View 11 Replies View RelatedI do document conversions. I work with MS Word files anywhere from 6MB to 23MB in size. If I reboot the computer and start a processing task I get no hangs. However, the longer I work on a task like a "find and replace", the slower the computer's processing gets and then I run out of virtual memory. When run out of virtual memory, I can no longer save the file.
Is there a way to reset or empty out the memory of my computer system without rebooting the system? I can copy and paste a small amount of text like a comma, but that does not help the memory problem. Edited to correct spelling error.
My computer has been freezing up a lot. I tried to use different system tools like msconfig, scandisk,and ect. to try to find and fix the problem, but my computer can't find those tools. I know I had them because they came pre-installed in Windows XP. Lastly I tried to start my computer in safe mode, but when it get to the safe mode drivers loading screen my computer freezes up.

Somehow I did something so that system tools such as Defrag and Device Manager are not working, I get some kind of Microsoft Management Console message that these operations cannot be opened or started.

I ran it recently and must have deleted some system files? as I no longer have access to the Help & Support (accessed from the start menu), the System information and the System Restore facility. Selecting System restore resuklts in a black dos prompt box, but i am unable to type anything into it..it just has a flashing curser. In addition, when I right click on the desktop and select properties I only get the dialogue box showing a modified theme. In order to access the other tabs (to change desktop background for example) I have to select another theme. Exiting from this and then right clicking a gain brings up the single theme box again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIt used to be, when I clicked on All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information, I would get a small text box that popped up on the screen with a lot of information of the system, including the amount of memory installed and the amount used, the size of the hard drive and the amount used, ect., and it would also have a small text box at the bottom that would let one search system information.
Now, suddenly,when I go to System Information and click on it, it simply gives me the Windows Help and Support Center.I know that I can use Everest to find the same info,but this little Windows info box was handy and quick,especially for just checking memory usage. I think the that it is the Msinfo32.exe But even when I put that in the "Run" box, it still simply gives me the Windows Help and Support Center.
Somehow the system restore option has disappeared from the system tools in the all programs - accessories. When I go to start - my computer - properties - system restore... it appears system restore is on - no checked box for turning it off. Where is it and how do I get it back?

First of all, a SUMMARY: Computer (Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop; Windows XP Home) operating extremely slowly; SERVICES.exe using >99% of CPU (Processor speed c. 1.2GHz) I recently installed DAEMON Tools, the virtual drive programme, and when I first opened it, my laptop slowed to a crawl and stopped responding, meaning I'd to use the 'off' button to switch it off (Ctrl-Alt-Delete didn't work).
Since then, each time I've switched it on, it has been operating as per normal but at a horribly slow speed. I have uninstalled DAEMON, but it seems the problem lies elsewhere; eventually I did get the task manager to come up, and (though it took about 5 minutes) switched to the Processes tab. It turns out that the SERVICES.exe process (run by 'System') is using 99% of my CPU.....
I am unable to access "System Information" in System Tools. Nothing happens when I click on it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI own at Pentium 4 XP Home Edition PC. Recently, I lost all of my default system sounds--like boot up sound and closing sound. The sound card is okay, because I can play CDs, listen to Real Player and otherwise get sounds.
I have gone into the sounds and audio devices properties panel and don't seem to be able to set it to play the sounds. The test button works the sounds fine, but I cannot actually activate them!
I have troubleshooted by surfing the web, installing various supposed registry fixes. I have also read the Microsoft data base articles that seem to pertain.
How long do you reckon before windows xp is replaced by the new operating system microsoft are developing?

The it comes back and says "Error 1606. Could not access network location..." Since Microsoft no longer supports this 2002 System Pack, I can't seem to totally disable this continual search for an update. how to disable/delete or whatever to get rid of this annoying reaccurance?
