winxp home, pent 4 processor,when i open start menu andthen for e.g. programs-accessories-system tools or any other program, whilst moving mouse around these windows everything freezes up can only open task manager by pressing cad this shows no activity at all, when i move cursor over it egg timer appears, have to then switch off and start again, have no problems when online,only ondesktop

View 6 Replies View RelatedIt started a few days ago. Programs just lock up the whole system, the system would freeze but no lock up, or it would boot me out of a program all together. Starting today, when I exited a program, the screens would go blank (the monitors would flip into power save mode [with the little blinky light]). I dont know what is going on. It is also slowing down something fierce. I have a p4 2.6, 1.2 gb RAM, 80gb hd, ATI 9200SE Video card. I hope I can get some ideas as to what is wrong.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI run Windows XP Home SP2 and enjoy listening to internet radio for hours at a time while doing non-computer activities. On several random occasions lately, the audio stream has stopped and I discover my desktop has locked up...with no response from keyboard or mouse. After a reset, I've checked the event log and Dr. Watson (drwtsn32.log) but can find no entry, including date/time, related to the freeze. My system runs cool, regularly showing 34C and 35C for board and CPU temps, with all fans at appropriate speeds. My firewall, antivirus and antispyware apps are regularly updated. I haven't installed new hardware or apps in weeks. What other tools are available to troubleshoot this kind of freeze?

Windows Update got downloaded automatically yesterday.I tried to do system restore to an earlier date but it was unsuccessful. After recording the message, I save it to my desktop. I then go to my email account and attach the file that I have saved to my desktop. The problem seems to be that what I am attaching is actually the address to my desktop and not the actual recording I am trying to send. In other words, what I am sending directs to "C:Documents and SettingsDavidDesktop". Anyway, I would really like to solve this problem and send the recording that I have been trying to do. I can do teh alt+crtl+del but sometimes im workin on something that i didnt save..for example..Im running Photoshop cs....i make something cool, then the program jsut stops responding...so i either wait for it to come back or end its task..but the I WOULD LOSE MY WORK!..(remember this is just an example)EVERY PROGRAM THAT IS RUNNING FREEZES TOGETHER ALMOST ALL THE TIME!!! for about 3-4mins...then they come back on

Somehow I did something so that system tools such as Defrag and Device Manager are not working, I get some kind of Microsoft Management Console message that these operations cannot be opened or started.

I have two computers, bothrunning XP with Service Pack 2. My older one has a program on it called "Easy Cleaner". I ran it recently and must have deleted some system files? as I no longer have access to the Help & Support (accessed from the start menu), the System information and the System Restore facility. Selecting System restore resuklts in a black dos prompt box, but i am unable to type anything into it..it just has a flashing curser. In addition, when I right click on the desktop and select properties I only get the dialogue box showing a modified theme. In order to access the other tabs (to change desktop background for example) I have to select another theme. Exiting from this and then right clicking a gain brings up the single theme box again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIt used to be, when I clicked on All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information, I would get a small text box that popped up on the screen with a lot of information of the system, including the amount of memory installed and the amount used, the size of the hard drive and the amount used, ect., and it would also have a small text box at the bottom that would let one search system information.
Now, suddenly,when I go to System Information and click on it, it simply gives me the Windows Help and Support Center.I know that I can use Everest to find the same info,but this little Windows info box was handy and quick,especially for just checking memory usage. I think the that it is the Msinfo32.exe But even when I put that in the "Run" box, it still simply gives me the Windows Help and Support Center.
Somehow the system restore option has disappeared from the system tools in the all programs - accessories. When I go to start - my computer - properties - system restore... it appears system restore is on - no checked box for turning it off. Where is it and how do I get it back?

I have windows xp. When I click on start, all prgrams - the list of programs shows up but alot of those folders are empy. Games, System tools, Microsoft Money, Microsoft Office Tools and many others are all empty. I apologize if this is a stupid question.I'm afraid I've done something by mistake to mess these folders up. Any help would be appreciated.
View 13 Replies View RelatedFirst of all, a SUMMARY: Computer (Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop; Windows XP Home) operating extremely slowly; SERVICES.exe using >99% of CPU (Processor speed c. 1.2GHz) I recently installed DAEMON Tools, the virtual drive programme, and when I first opened it, my laptop slowed to a crawl and stopped responding, meaning I'd to use the 'off' button to switch it off (Ctrl-Alt-Delete didn't work).
Since then, each time I've switched it on, it has been operating as per normal but at a horribly slow speed. I have uninstalled DAEMON, but it seems the problem lies elsewhere; eventually I did get the task manager to come up, and (though it took about 5 minutes) switched to the Processes tab. It turns out that the SERVICES.exe process (run by 'System') is using 99% of my CPU.....
I am unable to access "System Information" in System Tools. Nothing happens when I click on it.

Grifsoft for my virus protection. I scan my computer every night, and I keep
all my databases up-to-date. Recently, my computer was infected with the
Trojan Backdoor.SdBot virus, and I looked on the Norton Antiviruses website
to get rid of it and fix the computer. So now, at this time, I believe my
computer is clean.
I can be doing anything, so not even be around the computer and it freezes, could freeze on the screen saver, or when im on hte internet, or playin a game, or writing an email anything.... not an overheating problem because it has happened say right after its done booting, or 5 mins after running or say 12 hours after being on.... or jsut not freeze seems to be really random
View 8 Replies View RelatedI decided to install an old hard drive from one of my computers that is no longer used into my aging desktop. I've always dual booted with Linux, and decided that with the extra space, I was going to put Linux into the "new" drive, and reinstall Windows on the old primary drive. Both are IDE, and the following problem occurs whether just the Windows drive is plugged in, or if both disk are hooked up: I have a Compaq SR1620NX. I've only added extra RAM, a TV Tuner, and the extra hard drive When I put in the Compaq restore CD's, you first boot from the CD's, in order to copy the files first (which are the first 50% of the install), then the computer reboots into XP, and continues the installation process (Mostly Drivers, Crapware, and the license key). I've done this process once or twice before, and it worked flawlessly, this time it keeps freezing.
Once the computer boots into XP, I'm prompted to insert the final recovery disk. A few files are copied over, and the computer reboots. Once the computer reboots, the same screen pops up, and continues the installation (as it's suppose to). After a minute or two after the reboot, the computer locks up completely. I've waited quite awhile, yet nothing happens. Although it's against what the screen says, I hold the power button in, and let the computer reboot. Again, the installation screen pops up, but nothing happens
For many months now, XP has had problems booting - when it gets to the loading screen, it often freezes and I'm forced to restart time and time again. For a while, when I would play with the power supply on restarts, it would get through this problem, but recently, the computer has stopped booting at all. This has left me to think that perhaps all I need a new power supply, but I'm not entirely sure if that has anything to do with windows booting up, if anything at all.
