Transferring From Dial Up To Cable Broadband / Loosing USB Port?
Feb 11, 2006
Just went from dial up to cable broadband on my stationary Dell Inspiron 4100 laptop. Problem, had to sacrafice my only USB port for the connection, this was the port my printer was pluged into, I need my printer but there's no where to plug it in,my laptop has only one USB port & now it's occupied by the cable modem. Is it possable to hook the modem to another port, some of the other ports are, modem connector(telephone),network connector(telephone style jack),S-video TV-out connector(7 pin jack)& last a PC Card slot.
At present I connect to my broadband ISP using a wireless router. So that I can keep a previous email address active I need to log on to an old Pay As You Go dial up connection at least once every 60 days . I have set up the the connection in 'Network connection' in the control panel but get the error " no dial tone " when i try to use it, Should i be disconnecting the router and plugging in the phone cable to the PC directly as we did in pre broadband, dial up only days . Advise please on how to best ' cable ' the set up
I am thinking of gettin this really fast cable/broadband for AOL and its askin me that i need to have the above. i know for a fact i have alot of memory so iam sure thats cool but the 233 HMZ iam confused about, my PC is pentium 4.
I went to set up a new dial up connection in XP.I went to connection wizard, I click next, I check connect to the internet, I click next, I check set up my connection manually and click next. On the how do you want to connect to the internet page, connect using a broad band connection is allready checked and the other choices are greyed out. I cannot uncheck the connect using broadband listing. Every time I try this it is the same thing.
I'm quite new to computers so this may seem like a silly question, but I thought I'd ask anyway...I'm due to buy a new computer, but I have many MP3 music/video files on my old one and want to transfer them to the new one. The thing is I don't want to do it my connecting the two PC's ( with a wire/cabel etc.), so I was wondering if there's any other way of doing it?? Could I use a disc for instance (floppy disc??)
I changed from a dial-up connection to cable (Road Runner). Since then, my search engines have changed (when I search from the IE address bar, it uses MSN search now), and many pages that load, although faster, have the message "error on page" at the bottom. Outlook Express became my default email with the Road Runner email address, but most of the time it does not respond. Also, several games are slow to respond or do not respond at all (specifically CSI games and Hunting Unlimited). I run adaware and spybot at least once a week if not more, and defrag regularly. Are there extra precautions I should take with a cable connection?
I work for a fire department and they have Desktop Authority map certain network drives when they login. For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. Is this the cause of the dissapearing drives?
I lost all sound on my PC, ( example: even if someone logs on MSn I dont hear them, I cant listen to music.PS This morning everything was fine & all was working ).
I would like to configure a VPN between a office based file server and a mobile machine. Both m/c's are running versions of XP and logins have been set to allow the remote user to conncet as a properly authenticated member of group on the offoce m/c. Problem is I can't set the IP address for the remote machine to connect to. The office conection is via a dsl setup and I have been given an IP address for the internet connection by the ISP. After the ISP IP Address I expect to see a modem (which is also my internal LAN DHCP server) and the IP Address of the machine I wish to connect to. If my ISP has given me an IP address 200.200.1.100, my dsl modem is 192.168.1.255 and the machine I wish to connect to is 192.168.1.100 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 how does this translate to a VPN configuration?
I have been having nasty problems with my PC recently like loosing connection to DVD-Drive code 9 and code 41, also my internet connection went haywire by not leting me use any internet programs and i can't even look my internet settings through ipconfig /all also just today my graphics driver went berzerk and now i can only use the lowest resolution possible with 256 colors in windows.
I scanned through the PC and there were 3 trojan backdoors. I managed to clear them, but still the system is messed up. For some reason i had also lost all the restorepoints and the "last good know configuration" is not helping me out... So i'm planing to take the last step and reinstall the whole Windows. So i tought why not mess around for fun. What happens if i delete all my register entries? Do i dare to do it since i don't want to loose any data?
Two hard disks, C and D. C is the one on which all the files are, D is empty (what is it good for, by the way?). C has an overall capacity of 27.95 GB of which 12.9 is occupied. Now, I have noticed (for two or three months, I never bothered looking before) that I am losing .01 GB of disk space PER DAY. Thus, day before yesterday, I had 15.05 GB of remaining free space, yesterday 15.04 GB and today it is 15.03.
Why am i loosing my connection? Getting on line is no problem, but the moment i attempt to change to another website i loose my connection, in otherwords i am brought to the page that says "This page is not available etc etc" If i press the "Back" key i am brought back to the previous page not the page i tried to go to. Or if i press refresh it also will bring me to the previous page. An my second attempt at getting the desired web page it is then successful. This process is an everyday, all the time issue with the internet. I am running XP-PRO, 600MHZ, 256MB, sbc iNTERNET SERVICE. Folks what are my options?
When using AOL Broadband the computer slows down and sometimes takes several seconds to refresh a page.I happened to open the Task Managerand two things came to light:I cannot get the complete Task Manager panel...It only shows TASK and STATUS..it used to show lots more. Also, and this is my problem,it shows CPU USAGE 100%.If I close AOL and go back online it is ok for a while and then starts to slow down to a crawl.
I am using broadband and it is working good but in a tray there is a one message Local area connection limited or no conectivity so what is the problem.even there is a repair opetion and I tried it but no changes.using xp-2
I have taken out a subscription to Bulldog broadband (part of C&W in the UK) which claims to supply [upto] 8 MB per second download. Is there anyway this can be checked? This company is the only one offering such a high speed while its rivals are offering only 2 mb per second for the same price. Surely there must be a catch somewhere and if so how can this be checked?
Small home network with a wireless gateway router. Currently on dial up but looking to change to broadband:What kind of firewall do I need to install so a broadband service provider.
So i went to the update page to try and install them but the search bar just keeps searching without giving me any info. I let it run for an hour then closed it.
I have tried windows update and microsoft update both have the same result.
I have a broardband connection and have never had to wait this long before.
my problem is, after each restore was completed, i lost 1GB of free space on my C drive. by the 5th restore, i was up to losing 2GB of free space on my C drive. i know this because i went to My Computer looked at the amount of free disc space on my C drive. after doing the 5 or so restores, i've lost a total of about 6 GB of my C drive's free space. why is that happening? how do i get that space back?
I have a 120 gigabyte hard drive. It has been divided into three partitions when I bought it. My C drive has about 15 gigabytes, the D drive has about 100 gigabytes, and the hidden recovery partition has about 5 gigabytes. Can I resize the C drive to make it bigger without losing data? Is it safe? I have Windows Xp SP3 and EASUS Partition Master Professional version 4.0.
its a brand new computer and only a month old. Windows XP Professional keeps on restarting itself for no reason. I tried to get into safe mode but it also restarts the computer before the OS can be loaded. It's the main business computer that keeps all my employee numbers and payroll accounts. Is there a way to reformat the computer without losing my precious data?
Two computers connected via a router , I already check if the work group is set and yes they are in the same work group by the same name but we are not sharing a printer or files, we don't have a home network set. Well the point is that sometimes I get disconnect from the internet but the other computer still works online, so I have to reboot or even start up again the computer. we already RESET the router but after that, I already get twice again disconnected need to reboot again, I am missing something that I oversee and its producing this disconnection.
I can connect to broadband by moving the PC into my bedroom, removing the cover from the telephone socket in there and plugging the modem directly into the socket. This is not a satisfactory solution as I do not plan to surf in bed. In other telephone sockets in other rooms, the modem has a flashing green ADSL light which means it is not working properly. My fixed line telephone supplier says is it not a line problem and the ISP (the same company) says it is not a broadband problem. If it is my problem, how do I solve it? I use Windows XP and Internet explorer
I had admilli on my computer and i had run Hijackthis and deleted it from my pc.after this, my memory has began to fall dromatically randomly! i dnt hav much room on my pc but i had 256MB and it had gone down to 32MBi had then searched for files over 10MB and found that there was BLOB files that were 118MB each. i deleted them..I get back on my computer and then i had 20Mb left!!the Blob File reappeared.but i think that this storage loss is not due from this file.
I have an EXTERNAL HD. I formatted it in FAT a few months ago. Ever since then, my laptop PC was unable to recognize the unit, but the Mac (which is not working right now, unfortunately) never had a problem with it. When I connect it to my laptop PC via USB, the USB icon shows up and the "USB Mass Storage Device Properties" says the "device is working properly." But the folder doesn't show up in My Computer, and diskmgmt.msc says the device is "Unallocated." Hopefully that doesn't mean the unit crashed because I have some stuff on there.Without losing the data (that should be on it, unless it crashed), I want to convert this thing to NTFS. I did some Google searching, but the instructions on how to do this (they say use convert.exe) aren't working. Moreover, no one mentioned how to convert an External, secondary HD.
When I install my BT Broadband PCI card (the one with an aerial sticking out the back), it crashes my system.Which is understandable because after a new install XP (recovery disk) on new hard drive, I am running on XP SP1 - and XP doesn't understand this new card. But should it crash in Safe Mode?If not, do you think this might indicate the motherboard is at fault?
My comp has died and I am rebuilding a new one, I was curious if there are any major issues of transferring the old hd with the os to the new comp with the exception of changing out the drivers? I don't want to install XP all over again, add all the updates and then install all my programs and games.
