System Working Very Slow/Using Broadband Internet Connection
Aug 7, 2007Hell. Can anybody tell me what might be causing my computer to run slowly? I have Windows XP and a broadband connection to the Internet.

Broadband Connection - Internal Wiring - Internet Explorer
Aug 24, 2005I can connect to broadband by moving the PC into my bedroom, removing the cover from the telephone socket in there and plugging the modem directly into the socket. This is not a satisfactory solution as I do not plan to surf in bed. In other telephone sockets in other rooms, the modem has a flashing green ADSL light which means it is not working properly. My fixed line telephone supplier says is it not a line problem and the ISP (the same company) says it is not a broadband problem. If it is my problem, how do I solve it? I use Windows XP and Internet explorer

mobile machine. Both m/c's are running versions of XP and logins have been
set to allow the remote user to conncet as a properly authenticated member of

Problem is I can't set the IP address for the remote machine to connect to.
The office conection is via a dsl setup and I have been given an IP address
for the internet connection by the ISP. After the ISP IP Address I expect to
see a modem (which is also my internal LAN DHCP server) and the IP Address of
the machine I wish to connect to.
If my ISP has given me an IP address 200.200.1.100, my dsl modem is
192.168.1.255 and the machine I wish to connect to is 192.168.1.100 with
subnet mask 255.255.255.0 how does this translate to a VPN configuration?

Sep 7, 2005I have a number of XP computers (all SP2) connected to the Net via a wireless modem/router. Everything was fine until a few days ago when my connection speed dramatically slowed after being online for a few hours. This happens to all of the PCs in my home - so it's nothing internal to my PC. I tried to transfer a large file across the wireless network and it transferred fine (5Mb in 10 seconds). I can also connect to the router's web management software without problem. So it's not the wireless connection. Which leaves either my modem/router or my broadband connection. The router's "DSL" light is always on which infers that my broadband connection is OK. So that leaves my modem/router.
Very Slow Internet Connection - 56K
Sep 6, 2003One of the most frustrating things to have with a computer is a slow internet connection and 56K is about as slow as it gets these days. I feel the pain that 56K users have and hope that by following this thread they can experience a faster more reliable internet connection. There are a few things that one must understand prior to tweaking their 56K connections. The first is that it is actually a 53.3K connection since that is the speed that the FCC limits you to, on top of that most dialup users actually connect in the 40,000 – 50,000K range, which is excellent by dialup standards.

Oct 27, 2008I have a dell 4600 dimension operating on windows XP, and my ISP is optimum cable. It's been coming on slowly, but my connection to the internet, via internet explorer is extremely slow. I also experience long waits opeing new windows, or attachments from a site, as well as rply and fwd on E-mail. Once connected moving from site to site is normal speed, but as stated other openings take up to 2-3 minutes to connect. My ISP says my connection is fine, but I do get a connectivity icon on occasion, causing me to click repair, and it goes away.

Feb 18, 2007I'm on a 1500 plan and at the moment my download speed is the equivilent to dial-up! It's driving me INSANE but I can't figure out if the problem is a hardware or a software one. I have a NetComm NB5Plus4W ADSL2+ Modem Router all the required lights are lit up (ADSL light is solid, not flashing or out). I've restarted a zillion times, checked Windows Firewall (off), checked my AV software (not the problem), run a full virus scan (nothing), run Adaware and Spybot S&D and run a scan at PCPitstop which came back that everything was fine.

Apr 25, 2007The main issue is that as soon as I connect to the internet, it takes about 10 minutes for me to be able to do anything. Before the connection is established, the system is normal. After connecting, I can't open any programs, or even task manager or control panel. After about 10 minutes, everything opens and seems to run normal, but still a bit slow. If I disconnect and try to log off or shut down while waiting for IE to open, it freezes the computer and I have to manually shut down. I do go through the task manager and shut down everything that I can before signing on to the internet and it does not make any difference.

I got on here a while back because my parents suffered a lightening strike which rendered their computer worthless.After the great input on here, I replaced the PSU and the motherboard and blam, $140.00 later the computer started.However the internet connection (cable broad band) was so incredibly slow it would not open any web pages other than something simple like: Google.com or yahoo.com, etc. Click on a story or the weather and nothing. So I contact the internet provider (Insight Cable) and talk with their tech support that ran multiple tests. They seemed to think that there was a virus problem.
I ran the parents ZONE ALARM and it found 85 virus and 19 spy ware programs. It could not treat or fix the viruses.My parents are elderly and only use the computer to check email and cruise the net. They are completely computer illiterate. They may have inadvertently been cruising the net with Zone Alarm turned off.Today I loaded the Dell XP, OS, disk. I did not repair; I formatted the hard drive and loaded everything back onto the computer, i.e., drivers for video, sound, Ethernet, etc.I loaded the cable modem drivers and established a connection.

When the computer is connected to the internet via a DSL modem the start menu runs extremely slow. When the modem is off it acts normal. I often have to refresh multiple times in the browser (happens in Firefox, Chrome and Opera) to get it to finally load the page. MSN also struggles to connect, as do the likes of Dropbox and anti-virus. Most web pages / resources do finally load up if I try enough times but it's very, very time-consuming

Slow Internet - Not Working Properly

Nov 25, 2006Whenever I try to download a different type of browser (one with tabs) other than using the old IE6, it works fine for a few hours, but the next morning, the browser isn't able to connect & display any type of page. I've already gone through this routine using Tablane, Opera, Firefox, and Flashpeak Slimbrowser. Also, I have tried to update my version of Internet Explorer to IE7, but that never will connect, not even fo a few hours. I always end up having to go back to a restore point before I can use IE again. So.... I have looked around for answers/solutions to this issue, but I'm not even really sure what I looking for.

Dec 22, 2006The other day I tried to open yahoo messenger but it wouldn't open. So I restarted my comuter. As it was shutting off, a box popped up real fast right before it shut off. There was no way I coulda read what it said, it shut off too fast........When my computer came back on, a box popped up that said 'this computer does not have an internet connection' or something and had options to install it. So I ignored it and tested my internet connection and it still worked.Next, I realized that my sygate firewall and norton antivirus weren't in the system tray Then I got a box pop up that said my HP office jet printer encountered a problem and had to be shut down or something. My printer wasn't even on.

May 25, 2006my cable is not working properly.Every 15-20 minutes my internet connection is broken even though the modem is online and there is no problem with the cable coming into my house.
