Internet Connection Equals Slow Start Menu?
Jul 24, 2005
This one of the stranger things I've run accross and I'm having difficulty figuring it out. When the computer is connected to the internet via a DSL modem the start menu runs extremely slow. When the modem is off it acts normal. The computer is not mine but a colleges who has asked me if I've run accross this before and I'm a bit dumbfounded. He has adware and norton anitvirus running. Hasn't found anything on his computer.

I have a number of XP computers (all SP2) connected to the Net via a wireless modem/router. Everything was fine until a few days ago when my connection speed dramatically slowed after being online for a few hours. This happens to all of the PCs in my home - so it's nothing internal to my PC. I tried to transfer a large file across the wireless network and it transferred fine (5Mb in 10 seconds). I can also connect to the router's web management software without problem. So it's not the wireless connection. Which leaves either my modem/router or my broadband connection. The router's "DSL" light is always on which infers that my broadband connection is OK. So that leaves my modem/router.

One of the most frustrating things to have with a computer is a slow internet connection and 56K is about as slow as it gets these days. I feel the pain that 56K users have and hope that by following this thread they can experience a faster more reliable internet connection. There are a few things that one must understand prior to tweaking their 56K connections. The first is that it is actually a 53.3K connection since that is the speed that the FCC limits you to, on top of that most dialup users actually connect in the 40,000 – 50,000K range, which is excellent by dialup standards.

I have a dell 4600 dimension operating on windows XP, and my ISP is optimum cable. It's been coming on slowly, but my connection to the internet, via internet explorer is extremely slow. I also experience long waits opeing new windows, or attachments from a site, as well as rply and fwd on E-mail. Once connected moving from site to site is normal speed, but as stated other openings take up to 2-3 minutes to connect. My ISP says my connection is fine, but I do get a connectivity icon on occasion, causing me to click repair, and it goes away.

I'm on a 1500 plan and at the moment my download speed is the equivilent to dial-up! It's driving me INSANE but I can't figure out if the problem is a hardware or a software one. I have a NetComm NB5Plus4W ADSL2+ Modem Router all the required lights are lit up (ADSL light is solid, not flashing or out). I've restarted a zillion times, checked Windows Firewall (off), checked my AV software (not the problem), run a full virus scan (nothing), run Adaware and Spybot S&D and run a scan at PCPitstop which came back that everything was fine.

The main issue is that as soon as I connect to the internet, it takes about 10 minutes for me to be able to do anything. Before the connection is established, the system is normal. After connecting, I can't open any programs, or even task manager or control panel. After about 10 minutes, everything opens and seems to run normal, but still a bit slow. If I disconnect and try to log off or shut down while waiting for IE to open, it freezes the computer and I have to manually shut down. I do go through the task manager and shut down everything that I can before signing on to the internet and it does not make any difference.

I posted this under the software thread as well, but maybe this is a more appropriate place. This is the deal. I got on here a while back because my parents suffered a lightening strike which rendered their computer worthless. After the great input on here, I replaced the PSU and the motherboard and blam, $140.00 later the computer started. However the internet connection (cable broad band) was so incredibly slow it would not open any web pages other than something simple like: Google.com or yahoo.com, etc. Click on a story or the weather and nothing. So I contact the internet provider (Insight Cable) and talk with their tech support that ran multiple tests. They seemed to think that there was a virus problem.
I ran the parents ZONE ALARM and it found 85 virus and 19 spy ware programs. It could not treat or fix the viruses. My parents are elderly and only use the computer to check email and cruise the net. They are completely computer illiterate. They may have inadvertently been cruising the net with Zone Alarm turned off.Today I loaded the Dell XP, OS, disk. I did not repair; I formatted the hard drive and loaded everything back onto the computer, i.e., drivers for video, sound, Ethernet, etc.I loaded the cable modem drivers and established a connection.

The problem I've got is this. About a week ago I noticed that I was struggling with internet access. Wifi connects to a known router no problem but actually accessing sites can be a pain. I often have to refresh multiple times in the browser (happens in Firefox, Chrome and Opera) to get it to finally load the page. MSN also struggles to connect, as do the likes of Dropbox and anti-virus. Most web pages / resources do finally load up if I try enough times but it's very, very time-consuming

computer (WinXP SP2 - 1GB RAM) just started in the last day or two to load really slow -- it takes a good half hour or more to get to the point where you can click on an icon and it takes a few minutes to open. Don't even ask about the internet. it did not download anything in the last few days and has no idea why this is happening.

I have a new PC with XP 64 bit/IE 7. I then installed Firefox. There is no icon for IE on the start menu, just the Firefox icon. In all programs, I right clicked on IE to pin to start menu. Now there is an icon there, but I get all the options if you were to right click on IE on your desktop. My work has changed to a new program. Wave to make adjustments to trusted sites and internet properties. Their instructions are to right click on the start menu internet explorer, which gives the options of "browse the internet, internet properties, and remove from this list

I'll start with a bit of background so everyone doesn't suggest the usual tips for speeding up the start menu.I'm logged in as administrator and running XP and have had problems with the start menu - all programs list being stupidly slow to populate for a while, and no performance issues anywhere else. I've tried all the usual removing shadows, fade and slide; unchecking auto search for network folders and printers; fiddling with the menu order in the registry and checking there are no false entries, etc, etc, but with no joy.I then noticed in C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorStart MenuProgramsAccessories there are two invalid links to 'Tour Windows XP' and 'Windows Explorer', and whenever I get anywhere near this folder everything slows up, which suggests to me these are the problem (although I could be wrong).
When I try to delete these shortcuts I get 'Cannot delete Tour Windows XP: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)'. The location both shortcuts are pointing to is C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorStart MenuProgramsAccessories - so are these just pointing to themselves?I then went on to check C:Documents and SettingsDefault UserStart MenuProgramsAccessories and found both these shortcuts exist there as well, and are valid working shortcuts. Easy I thought, I can just copy these over to replace the invalid shortcuts and everything's fixed - but it asks me if I want to replace the existing file, and then says 'Cannot move Tour Windows XP: A file with the same name already exists. Specify a different name.'So I appear to be stuck with two invalid shortcuts in my menu that drive the processor mad anytime I go near them, and I can't delete, rename or point them at something else.

This tweak works also if your Using Zone Alarm or Zone Alarm Pro V.3.7. I found out by applying this tweak for Nortons with my Zone Alarm program.
If you are using Norton Internet Security 2002, and are experiencing slow start-up of XP. i.e. you can see the desktop with icons etc. but it takes 30-60sec before you can start using the computer.1. Click on start buttom.2. Select control panel3. Open “Network Connections”4. Under “LAN and High-Speed Internet”, right-click on your “Local Area Connection” and select “Properties”5. Under “General” tab, select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” and select “Properties.6. Select “Use the following IP address:” 7. Under “IP address” enter following : 192.168.0.X (Replace X with a value between 1 and 254. If you have multiple computers, pick differnt numbers for each computer on your network)8.

my cable is not working properly.Every 15-20 minutes my internet connection is broken even though the modem is online and there is no problem with the cable coming into my house. I have to reset the cable modem and then it works for another 10-20 minutes until the next cut. Ive had this problem before (last time i changed computers) but cant remember how it was resolved. I already talked to my ISP support but these guys are brain damaged or something and cannot even comprehend my problem and all 3 actually concluded that i had somehow contracted some killer virus immediately after connecting my computer and this virus was the root of my problems

I am curious to know if "choice.exe" is spyware. I ran one of my anti-spyware programs last night and it listed choice.exe and it's partner file in the Prefetch folder as spyware. I went online and it gave it an "8" on the threat level from 1-10. I quarantined both files to see if I could get some advise before deleting them.

I recently reinstalled Windows XP Home on a friends computer, but when I went
to create their dialup connection to the internet, I couldn't.I went into the 'Internet Connection Wizard'. Told it that I was connecting directly to the internet. Then I told it I was going to set up the connection manually. But whenever the option comes up to setup a dial-up or broadband connection, the dial-up option is greyed out and unselectable. In device manager, it shows my modem as being fine. It's installed with no conflicts.

I am using Windows XP/SP2 a newish computer and some things changed from how it used to be.From the *Start* Button, there is the further button *Programs*. This then has the fly-out menu which used to open only the most recently accessed programs. Typically, after a boot it would show the items which opened in *Start-Up*, the rest were accessible only by hovering the mouse cursor over a button showing downward pointing arrows (more chevron like). This would then open the entire sub menu of programs to choose from. However, in the past week it now opens in that expanded view all the time. There is no sign of the little arrows anymore, and I always end up with a screen full of program lists whenever I go to Start/Programs.
