I removed (manually, as the uninstaller was not able to do it) McAfee Firewall from my pc and installed Zone Alarm Suite, but Security Center keeps to tell me "one of the firewalls installed is working".I would like to make Windows understand there is just a firewall installed and working. Is there the way? Which Registry Keys do I remove?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got Windows XP and when I try and remove McAfee using the 'add/remove programs' Uninstaller, it comes up with an error message (no number - just 'an error has occured while trying to uninstall McAfee Security System'). I have succesfully uninstalled other components of McAfee, like the spamkiller and firewall, but can't get rid of this last bit, which I need to do to install my new software. I've also tried uninstalling from the start menu but no option comes up under the programme list.

I have run a full virus scan, Spybot, Adaware and Spy doctor. nothing has been found that would suggest a problem. Any ideas as to why? It's not every time and only at start up. I am running XP Home, McAfee version 5. Once running no problems.

Statup takes a long time and while it is loading things the firewall disables until after everything in startup loads. Lately I have had problems when docking my iPod. It just undocks on it's own and nothing is touching it or the cable connecting it to the computer. I ran Hijack this but no sure how to interpret it. I am running Windows 2k pro on a Compaq Presario.

View 16 Replies View RelatedI was tweaking the services on Win XP pro & managed to mess things up a bit. I am now unable to start most services including firewall, RPC, audio, win installer, networking etc. I get mostly Error 1068 can't start dependencies. Web Client service is stuck on 'stopping' even after several reboots. I am unable to open properties dialog for individual services also. Computer is somewhat functional, has internet access though it is totally unprotected as I can't get antivirus to start. Copy & paste is also not working. I am unable to restore. I have tried safe mode but nothing. I tried to edit the registry to start the RPC but it didn't work (perhaps was wrong set of instructions for problem). The RPC startup seems to be enabled but says it can't start error 1058, no enabled devices associated with it. I don't have XP disc so I can't go into recovery either. I have procured XP support tools but can't install it. I have tried everything I can think of.

When I go to anything that uses Java such as Geocities my computer starts making a chugging noise and the browser (IE or Firefox) crashes. It brings up one of those senseless error messages about something failing. I'd look now but it'd close this screen. I tried uninstalling Java but when I try uninstalling the JS2E Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update 5 it won't let me uninstall either. It makes the same noise and freezes up the window. What in the hell do I do? I've never had a problem quite like this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy friends XP crashed so I leant them my recovery disc (my old pc had XP this one has vista), when the xp recovery disc didn't work for them, they used my Acer Vista one which has half or more loaded vista and stalled probably because the lap top is to old to handle it. Anyway there is a blue Acer loading screen doing nothing and the vista programs run behind it which makes it difficult to see what you're doing. They brought it around to me as I can use this pc to see what I'm doing and try and fix there's more or less by feel, if that makes sense. They tried reinstalling my xp disc but vista seems to super seed it and it wont take, which doesn't surprise me.

I went from connecting from the modem to comp, to modem > router > comp using a Linksys setup tool. If I simply set up the comp the old way and reboot, I have no connection. Linksys does not provide a way to uninstall the router. Google did not give any results except that there is no way to remove it. How do I go back to connecting straight from the modem?

so we just installed SP3 for XP. At first the boot was failing, made some hardware changes and all was good seemingly... now the keyboard and mouse no longer work, but they work when the computer just starts up. They just stop working shortly after. I plugged in a USB mouse and that works, so I was thinking it may be a problem with the PS/2 ports.

Everything else is working OK. I get an Error 39 (drivers corrupted or missing) and the 2 entries in Device Manager both have yellow marks against them. I only have "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" and "Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller" entries below the entry for Universal Serial Bus Controllers - no Root Hubs are there and there are no Unknown Devices anywhere else.I was running XP Pro SP2 when the ports went, but have installed SP3 and Updated to see if that did anything - it didn't. I have tried the troubleshooting suggestions on Microsoft such as deinstalling and rebooting, updating, system restore and have done a repair installation using my original XP SP2 disc all with no result.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI finally got sp2 installed and most things seem to be working ok. I had a problem with Nikon Capture software but got that resolved with Nikon tech last night. Now the only thing left that is bugging me is after boot up it goes to a black screen and hangs for about a minute, then goes to a black screen with a black and white progress bar across the bottom of screen and it takes about 2 minutes before it goes to the windows startup screen and boots up normally from there. I have been to Microsoft support site and looked thru the archives for this particular problem and can't find anything.

I've lost the system recovery disk buta friend gave me theirs. when I inserted it I was asked for a serial number and duly put in the one on the bottom of the laptop but it was rejected.Nothing would work so I exited the menu and went out and purchased a brand new copy of the O/S. However when I put the disc in it keeps taking me back to the old screen which asks me for a serial number and it wont accept the one form the disk I purchased.

None of my USB ports are working. I believe that it was the cause of a thunderstorm. I already uninstalled all drivers and ports in the device manager and let windows reinstall them, and still none of my hardware is recognized, not even my mouse. All drivers seem to be installed correctly. Can my usb ports be fried? I dunno.

View 2 Replies View Relatedmy girlfriend had been adamant about not updating her computer because she claimed that is a way to get viruses.I scoffed and updated it anyway.I downloaded almost 2 years worth of updates over a two week period, the last update was the XP Service Pack 2 update.The very first time the computer was started after her SP2 update it loaded extremely slowly. The mouse doesn't work correctly (I can only right click) and most programs are inaccessible. I tried to System Restore (which is no easy task without a mouse) but it fails each time. I ran a virus scan with AVG but had no luck finding any infections.
