Installed Service Pack 2 / System Working Very Slow?
Mar 22, 2007
my girlfriend had been adamant about not updating her computer because she claimed that is a way to get viruses.I scoffed and updated it anyway.I downloaded almost 2 years worth of updates over a two week period, the last update was the XP Service Pack 2 update. The very first time the computer was started after her SP2 update it loaded extremely slowly. The mouse doesn't work correctly (I can only right click) and most programs are inaccessible. I tried to System Restore (which is no easy task without a mouse) but it fails each time. I ran a virus scan with AVG but had no luck finding any infections.
I've been battling it out with a filth ridden computer for days, appear to be almost on top of it. It is completely clean of virii/malware/spyware I just installed SP2 on it, and since then it has been exceptionally slow to boot.Following the initial boot screen, the screen goes blank for over 2 minutes It then gets to the black screen with the grey progress bar along the bottom. It takes at least 5 minutes to get through this progress bar.
i am currently running windows 2003 server edition and everytime i tried to install the service pack 3 update, an error popped up stating that the service pack is not compatible with my Operating system. I tried to look into the event viewer for some information on what should i do but it doesn't really provide that much. so my problem is that i don't know what prevent me from installing the service pack3.
A few ways you can determine what level of service pack you have installed: 1. Run WINVER. This will show the OS, the Service Pack and the actual service pack build number 2. WindowsKey+Break - Just the OS and Service Pack number 3. Control Panel / System - Same screen as #2. If you want to determine the service pack level of the files on a CD before you install it, there are a few options. One is to simply look on the CD itself. Another option is to simply look at the dates on the files: 1. The bulk of the XP files should be dated sometime around 2001 2. If you have SP1, there will be files dated around 8/2002 (or somewhere between #1 and #3 3. If you have SP2, there will be files dated around 8/2004.
Since i downloaded and installed the service pack 2 on my windows xp pro edition, i can't access one of my three hard drives. The system does recognize it, but it keeps telling me it's offline or asks me if i want to format it.But I sure don't want to.
owing to a BSOD and a corrupt 'C' drive etc (when nothing had changed!). I performed a reformat and clean install of XP(SP2) from my recovery CD. All went well and now starting again, installed drivers etc, and all high priority updates from MS site. Several restarts without problem. Left system running for a few hours, went back to it, brought it out of idle mode to find just the 'blue background', no menu or icons!, tried restart same problem. can get into 'safe mode' and all there, but will not complete that final phase of booting up.
I'm relatively PC challenged [not entirely though please bear in mind]I bought a new PC and took delivery late Thursday last [the day before Good Friday]. The place I bought it from is in another city about 150km away and as luck would have it, has closed now for a few weeks. So I'm on my own til then.Started it up first time successfully and added a new user. Didn't add any programmes. Next time I tried to start it got a message:Windows rootsystem 32 hal.dll missing or corrupted.Re-booted and now I get to black screen with Safe Mode, Last Known Config etc otions. I can boot into safe mode but none of the others work. They all just start up the "Windows Starting" page then it re-boots itself and goes through the same cycle. If I leave it then it will just keep cycling like this.Tried booting into safe mode and looked at System Restore but there is no earlier version to restore to.
I did a full HP system restore and the Computer guy who came to my house installed the Service Pack 3, the latest version. I used to have Service Pack 1. I have had quite a few problems since then because of the full system restore and having to re-install alot of my programs, etc. But anyway I noticed today, that down in my system tray (or whatever you call it) on the bottom right of my computer where all the little icons are, there is this Microsoft Updates Automatic Updater with the yellow shield and it said that an update ready to install so I tried installing it. And this is what it said:
Automatic Updates Some updates could not be installed The following updates were not installed: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86 ....SO- that seems like a conflict since my computer had Service Pack 3 and the Microsoft Updates is trying to install this Service Pack 1 thing. What should I do? Do I have to get it all in sync somehow and is this messing up things on my computer? Also does this mean I am missing out on all the correct updates for my computer?
My desktop computer is constantly rebooting. Even when i select "last know good cofig.."I happened after i downloaded SP3 and then restarted to finish installation. Anybody have any ideas how to fix this?
Should I turn off the Internet Firewall before Service Pack 2 is installed? After it is downloaded, then am I protected or do I have to go back and turn on Internet Firewall? Thanks! I don't quite understand what I should do about the Internet Firewall.
I was recently on Sp2 and decided to upgrade to sp3, I didn't like some parts so i decided to uninstall it - I was told to use add/remove program files "service pack 3" and after the uninstall, when I ran "winver" it appeared as "service pack 2" then some problems appeared such as whenever I clicked on internet explorer I get a notice bar saying "installing program" but nothing at all happened - after 10-15min it disappeared and internet explorer appeared. So I tried system restore, that only stuffed it up more, windows then said "service pack 3" when I was on service pack one and the errors were still there..I decided to do what I searched for on tech support guy forums and the guy said to reinstall windows and it won't affect any program files - only replace system files - so I tried it out. Worked great and now I'm on SP2 but I'm still having the install problems with explorer.
i have a problem with explorer.exe process in my system when i boot, in desktop the tray icons boot for some time (tat too not all tray icons) and after tat they again repeat from beggining this keeps repeating and also my desktop icons are not there, i tried adding a new process explorer.exe in taskmanager its still the same ,i also tried system restore still not working i have windows xp sp2
I have installed (successfully, I thought) Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, but apparently not. My computer (Dell laptop) was first incredibly slow, then would not launch IE, and now will not even boot up. It never gets past the blue "Welcome" screen.
The first thing is I keep getting a 'Windows Installer' box popping up which says 'preparing to install' when I check my Hotmail emails. This problem began after I had a windows update which turned out to be an upgrade to Service Pack 3, last week. As soon as I've clicked cancel on the Windows Installer box, I get an alert from ZoneAlarm saying Windows Messenger is requesting to access the internet.
The first time it happened I just let the installer do what it was trying to as I thought the service pack upgrade had made changes to some settings. But then it happened again as soon as I opened the next email (I only open emails from people who I know like my close friends or family by the way). So I'm presuming there's a problem somewhere?
Once I installed sp3, I could not get past the windows loading screen, so I started in safemode and uninstalled sp3 that way. My question is, does uninstalling sp3 remove sp2 as well. I can not see sp2 under add/remove programs, but my windows update history says I downloaded sp2 last May.
Use the Custom scan at the Windows Update site to see if there are any new drivers for your hardware immediately after installing SP2. Mods. Can you make this one sticky? What do you think of the Processor & RAM requirements quoted? Unrealistic?
I'm not sure if I have trojans in my system or if the Service Pack 2 is responsible for a bunch of new "services" running in the background of my computer. I've tried searching the internet and have found conflicting reports, so I thought I'd come to the BEST tech source on the net! Now...I've scanned with HJT and I can't see anything suspicious but then again I'm NOT a techie. The services I found that are running on my computer are as follows: C:WINDOWSSystem3 2svchost.exe -k netsvcs (there are about 30 - 40 of these entries on my computer) C:WINDOWSSystem32svchost.exe DcomLaunch (there are 2 of these entries on my computer) C:WINDOWSSystem32svchost.exe -k NetworkService
Got a system I'm looking at for someone I know. They have a file extension issue that I'm not familiar with. Here's what it is and what they think they did to get it that way.Currently all but a couple their shortcuts on the desktop have a .lnk extension attached to them. If you try to double click the shortcut to open the program windows tells you that it can't open the file and askes you what program to use. Here's what they were doing when they noticed this problem. They went into Windows Explorer and accessed the "tools" menu. From there they went to "folder options" and selected the "file types" tab. They clicked to create a new file extension, entered "lnk" for the extension and clicked "ok" Then they selected the new extension from the list and clicked the "advanced" option. In the resulting window they unchecked the "confirm open after download" option and clicked "ok". After going through this sequence they noticed that all of their shortcuts had been modified with this extension. Also now if you create a new shortcut it is automatically given this file extension. They tried going back to the folder options and removing the extension but that hasn't helped the problem any. Changing the name of the shortcut back to the original format doesn't help either. The system is currently running Windows XP with service pack 1.
Does anyone know how to correct the following error appears at startup; The procedure entry point set keyboard filter hook could not be located in the dynamic link library?
"Don't let XP Service Pack 3 hose your system From the moment Microsoft released it, Service Pack 3 for Windows XP has been the subject of almost daily reports of bugs, incompatibilities, and general headaches. You can install SP3 with confidence providing you take certain precautions or, if you prefer, use Windows' Automatic Update settings to keep the service pack off your system.
I have two computers, bothrunning XP with Service Pack 2. My older one has a program on it called "Easy Cleaner". I ran it recently and must have deleted some system files? as I no longer have access to the Help & Support (accessed from the start menu), the System information and the System Restore facility. Selecting System restore resuklts in a black dos prompt box, but i am unable to type anything into it..it just has a flashing curser. In addition, when I right click on the desktop and select properties I only get the dialogue box showing a modified theme. In order to access the other tabs (to change desktop background for example) I have to select another theme. Exiting from this and then right clicking a gain brings up the single theme box again.
I haven't installed anything new recently except for windows updates. (College makes us install them.) Yesterday after a reboot, my system started acting strangely for no apparent reason. I have the following problems: System Restore opens to a blank page Help Center doesn't load at all windows won't minimize to the taskbar windows media player gives the error "can't perform operation, low memory" word gives the error "this document could not be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document." Otherwise word functions properly.
copy/paste doesn't work dragging files/folders on the desktop and in windows explorer doesn't work When I try to view 'properties' of errors in the event log, nothing happens. I also noted that I started getting a lot of Event 4609 after these problems sprang up, when I hadn't been getting any previously. I also noted that my running processes are about 6 fewer than they were before I encountered this problem. Additionally, I am unable to start in safe mode. Pressing f8 produces no results. Everything else seems to work fine. So the system works, but is obviously in a crippled state, for no apparent reason. I'd rather not have to reinstall the os because I don't have a cd at the moment.
If i was to install service pack 2, via the disc i have, and i dont like what it has done to my computer, will i be able to refer back to a System Restore Point i created before installation?
I have had Windows XP on my computer for 3 years, during that time I have had no problems with updates. A couple of days ago updates were running when I got the following message box. Service pack 3 setup. Access denied1! Microsoft will now un-install the current updates. At this point I was in a hurry to leave and shut off my computer thinking that when I started up again, the updates would resume their activity.......
Every time I try to download SP2 computer restarts during the installation, specifically when its making backup files. I got this error signature after the computer rebooted I have a Widows XP Home edition.
My friend just got the net however she cant use it because she needs SP2. shes on SP1 Shes using a wireless connection. she cant connect to the net to download SP2 then to SP3. so is there a way I can download it? then pass it to her via USB? Link to download?
ANYBODY OUT THERE KNOW HOW TO UPGRADE MY WINDOWS XP,PRO(SP1)-TO WINDOWS XP,PRO(SP2)- I,JUST NEED TO UPGRADE. I DON`T WANT TO LOSE ANY OF MY UTILITIES OR PROGRAMS THAT CAME WITH MY COMPUTER. IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE TO GO, AND WHAT TO DO
Recently I've been trying to install XP SP2 on a system that was recovered using an XP upgrade disc that only had SP1. The setup program gets through backing up, creating a restore point and so on, but during the actual file installation process, an error causes setup to abort and undo all changes made (rollback). "Service Pack 2 Setup Error." is the title bar, and "The system cannot find the path specified." is the message, the only option is to click ok, which opens the XP SP2 uninstall wizard. I've tried using Subinacl to reset security settings, tried installing in both safe and normal modes, used chkdsk /r and /p and tried installing again, and each time got the same message.
I have Win XP Home Edition, my computer crashed last night and I had to re-install windows. I've been installing all my window updates but I keep getting an error for Service Pack 1. "The core system file (kernel) used to this computer is not a Microsoft Windows file." And Service Pack 2 has been trying to download to my D drive, which is an external hard drive.
i just performed a complete system recovery. started the computer, installed windows xp sp2 and sp3, went to the microsoft download center to get my updates and also got all my extras like, java, flash player, shockwave and direct x among many other updates. i also scan my computer with secunia just to make sure i had everything installed on my pc. i started noticing that my computer was working kinda slow.
