Occasionally when I start up, The Icon in the system tray for McAfee turns to black and says firewall disabled. I have run a full virus scan, Spybot, Adaware and Spy doctor. nothing has been found that would suggest a problem. Any ideas as to why? It's not every time and only at start up. I am running XP Home, McAfee version 5. Once running no problems.

Statup takes a long time and while it is loading things the firewall disables until after everything in startup loads. Lately I have had problems when docking my iPod. It just undocks on it's own and nothing is touching it or the cable connecting it to the computer. I ran Hijack this but no sure how to interpret it. I am running Windows 2k pro on a Compaq Presario.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI removed (manually, as the uninstaller was not able to do it) McAfee Firewall from my pc and installed Zone Alarm Suite, but Security Center keeps to tell me "one of the firewalls installed is working".I would like to make Windows understand there is just a firewall installed and working. Is there the way? Which Registry Keys do I remove?
I've got Windows XP and when I try and remove McAfee using the 'add/remove programs' Uninstaller, it comes up with an error message (no number - just 'an error has occured while trying to uninstall McAfee Security System'). I have succesfully uninstalled other components of McAfee, like the spamkiller and firewall, but can't get rid of this last bit, which I need to do to install my new software. I've also tried uninstalling from the start menu but no option comes up under the programme list.

I sadly do not have access to active directory, but do have an NT4 domain and Symantec Solution Suite 1 which includes a console for pushing out files and commands.My problem so far is that anything I do after SP2 is installed, but before the machine reboots with regard to firewall settings seems to be overwritten on reboot.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi have a problem with my sp2 firewall option. i updated my xp sp1 to xp sp2. the setting is disable that is the radio button On(recommended),Dont allow exception and the off (not recommended) are disabled(unclickable). the services are fine the security center, and windows firewall/ICS are set as automatic and all started. did i miss other services to start. any hotfix i need to install first before updated to xp service pack 2.

I have disabled all but two of the automatic startup items using msconfig. My system used to start in less than two minutes, easily. Now it takes a more than a minute or two longer than that.
I know what the problem is; the only three items that show in the system tray after startup are:
1) The AVG Antivirus icon .
2) The Spybot SD Resident icon.
3) Local Area Connection (This is the icon which shows two computer monitors with screens that light up and go dark periodically)
Now, after the problem started, the last item, the Local Area Connection icon is the one that doesn't load, for VERY long. So it may be something to do with that. Also, just before the icon finally shows up(after which point the computer is fine to use) I've notice that a Windows security notification icon appears...it flashes, for just a second, and then is replaced by the Local Area Connection icon. For the record, these are the two icons I'm talking about:

I have had my automatic updates disabled for a while now, so you might think that that's the reason the notification is showing up but I've already disabled that notification using Windows Security Center.
Try making my laptop less slow and not freeze all the time when doing the simplest of tasks.
However, my problem happens after trying to disable the Startup Items from the MSconfig dialogue.
-After I have unchecked the boxes I don't want, I click OK or Apply;
-It then tells me I have to restart for the changes to take place, so I do this;
-Then after completing its restart a message says that "The System Configuration Utility is in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts up."
-it then opens the MSconfig dialogue box again.
If I just close the utility or click ok, sure enough it keeps on opening every time I startup. Or else, what it's trying to convince me to do is to start up in Normal Mode. But I won't do this because then all the Startup Items I'd disabled become enabled again and the whole lengthy task was a waist of time!
why does it say warning disk write cache is disabled.but in device manager everything seems fine and are there any other things you recomend i do to get a faster bootup. everything performs great but there may be more i can do for a even faster bootup.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just cleaned out a slightly infection of spyware and viruses on this computer and everything looks nice a clean but unfortunately there seems to be some residual problems.My startup is much slower, the 'loading your personal settings' can take upwards of 2 minutes. But, it can by by-passed by hitting ctrl-alt-del. Once I get to the desktop I notice that Norton Anti-Virus is disabled and it stays disabled until the icons load which ALSO takes another 2-3 minutes. I can open programs and they run fine but I am unable select anything on the desktop or right click on it.
I've never had slowdown like this on here before. It also only seems to be happening on this one windows account, the other ones load up much faster. I've cleaned it the best I can running all the normal apps and some other cleaners. Even tried restoring the desktop back to the windows xp default appearance.
i installed zone alarm firewall, and whenever i start up, this folder/window opens -- c/program files/ zone.com, with a zone games file folder showing. this is not in the startup folder. totally useless. i DO want zone alarm to start up (in tin the startup file) but how do I get rid of this pesky thing?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to x64 version from 32 bit XP. But to my disappointment, the display properties only show up to 32 bit. Where is the 64 bit option? Here is the hardware I have: I had thought that while playing games, wherever there would be unmixed colors, they would now be mixed properly, like steam coming in dark areas in a game, or too many colors not fading into each other properly. But looks like I would need to do with the 32 bit only I guess.

Ever since I loaded MS-IE-8, I have found that '2' copies of IE open in Task Manager... I run a DELL-D800 (yes 7yrs old) w/ XP-sp3 and 1Gig RAM. With IE open twice - it is using upto .8Gig of RAM (not acceptable). Today (2010/04/02)I tried Google Chrome instead of IE - the first time it opened with only one copy in TskMgr - the second time it too now has 2 copies open... It went from blazing fast to as slow or slower than IE... And all the problems with IE are now returning with Chrome... What is causing this? Virus? Bug? Normal process?

Thought it was a software issue, so I uninstalled all recenly installed software, but no joy.

Checked Startup and disabled it using Safemode to isolate source. Check if there was a BAT file created a few days earlier. But came up with nothing.Every time I used Start/Run/CMD or click CMD shortcut from Quick Launch, a second window that warns me my windows XP will force shutdown everything in less than 30 secs. Don't have even have enough time to disable it using cmd window or take a screen shot.

My computer has yet another problem - lovely.
It was all running fine until yesterday night when I went to play on a game - Medal Of Honor: Spearhead, which i've been playing for years. Anyways, I connected to my usual server, and the computer froze. I waited for 10 mins, and then powered it off by the PWR button on the front of the computer.
Would this point to a disk prob
What could I do to verify if it is anything else ?

Did a system manufacturer install(wiped everything)..Went thru process 2 days ago...Computer was working great, best it had run in awhile...Today when I turned it on I was able to move the cursor around but nothing could be clicked on except for the initial 5-8 secs Windows came on, I was able to click on icons but it wasn't long enough to run before the computer froze....I'm worried I have a hardware failure because the software ran fine for 2 days..Computer is 5 yrs old..
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new Acer Veriton M410 UD5000P, 1 x AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ / 2.6 GHz ( Dual-Core ), 3 gibs DDR2 of ram and a sata 300 hd with win xp pro, I remove fom the msconfig startup all those utilities that acer installed to speed up the booting, plus some other tweaks, the partitions from factory came as FAT32, and Norton internet security is installed for 60 days, i am wondering if the delay is cause maybe Norton is checking during boot time or cause the the file system is fat32, any opinion is vey appreciated in orde to speed the boot time, by the way, I don't now if i should remove the register keys related with those utilities that are not any longer on the startup
