I'm pretty sure I have a virus on my PC itself and on my flash drive. CA keeps popping up every 10 seconds or so telling me that a virus has been detected and deleted on my removable drive. It's called INF/Slenfbot.GT and it's on my Autorun.inf file on my drive.

My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. View 6 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows XP Professional SP2 on an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe MB. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.

Dont know where they came from, but every time I start or re-start my PC the "SafelyRemove Hardware" icon appears in the right bottom of my screen. Cant get rid of it, and where did these removable drives come from???

One is for MemoryStick, another is SD Cards, CompactFlash, etc. Would it be alright to rename these to something more recognizable at a glance? (for example, rename "Removable Disk (H)" to "SD Card") Or will it somehow mess up the way the drives read the cards?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an odd issue with diskmgmt.msc or the disk managment feature of computer management (both the same thing). Anyway, it displays my fixed hard drive in my laptop just fine, however my SD/MMC cards, CD/DVD drives, external drives, etc.....do not show up. They are recognized however, and I can access my drive G: (the SD card) just fine through explorer and my computer. Is there any reason why they're not showing up in my disk management console? and is there a way to fix this?

Example: System 1 is a P4 built in a Shuttle SFF case with the provided MB; 1 SATA hard disk with three partitions, 1 DVD-ROM on PATA, 1 floppy on floppy channel, 1 multi-format flash reader on USB; the system sees two of the flash slots as removable storage. System 2 is an Athlon 64 built on an Epox Nvidia+ MB. 1 SATA hard disk (with two partitions), 1 SATA DVD-ROM (using a bridge adapter), 4 hard disks on PATA, 1 floppy on floppy channel, 1 multi-format flash reader on USB; the system sees _both_ SATA drives as being removable along with two of the flash slots. Either system properly sees an external hard disk on USB or Firewire as being removable.

Problem is that all of a sudden the pc has decided to switch back on 15 seconds after shutdown.
Thought it was a software issue, so I uninstalled all recenly installed software, but no joy.
Runing Win XP Pro, all updates installed.
I reformatted my C: drive today and installed win xp pro fresh and now its doing this.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using a Windows XP Pro SP2. I have run Spybot, Ad-Aware, Clamwin and Symantec 10.1.6.6000 to verify if its virus related. Checked Startup and disabled it using Safemode to isolate source. Check if there was a BAT file created a few days earlier. But came up with nothing.Every time I used Start/Run/CMD or click CMD shortcut from Quick Launch, a second window that warns me my windows XP will force shutdown everything in less than 30 secs. Don't have even have enough time to disable it using cmd window or take a screen shot.

My computer has yet another problem - lovely.
It was all running fine until yesterday night when I went to play on a game - Medal Of Honor: Spearhead, which i've been playing for years. Anyways, I connected to my usual server, and the computer froze. I waited for 10 mins, and then powered it off by the PWR button on the front of the computer.
Would this point to a disk prob
What could I do to verify if it is anything else ?

Did a system manufacturer install(wiped everything)..Went thru process 2 days ago...Computer was working great, best it had run in awhile...Today when I turned it on I was able to move the cursor around but nothing could be clicked on except for the initial 5-8 secs Windows came on, I was able to click on icons but it wasn't long enough to run before the computer froze....I'm worried I have a hardware failure because the software ran fine for 2 days..Computer is 5 yrs old..
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new Acer Veriton M410 UD5000P, 1 x AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ / 2.6 GHz ( Dual-Core ), 3 gibs DDR2 of ram and a sata 300 hd with win xp pro, I remove fom the msconfig startup all those utilities that acer installed to speed up the booting, plus some other tweaks, the partitions from factory came as FAT32, and Norton internet security is installed for 60 days, i am wondering if the delay is cause maybe Norton is checking during boot time or cause the the file system is fat32, any opinion is vey appreciated in orde to speed the boot time, by the way, I don't now if i should remove the register keys related with those utilities that are not any longer on the startup

I have run a full virus scan, Spybot, Adaware and Spy doctor. nothing has been found that would suggest a problem. Any ideas as to why? It's not every time and only at start up. I am running XP Home, McAfee version 5. Once running no problems.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".

Can you create a pagefile.sys on removable HDD's? I apparently cannot. I wanted to set an initial and max Pagefile amount of 500MB to 750MB each across all drives except C. Even though the system "seems" to have set the amount of space I allocated in the Virtual Memory section, it has created only ONE 500MB pagefile.sys on my H (fixed) drive. That amount is confirmed on the Advanced Tab for Performance Options section by the statement "Total Paging File For All Drives: 500". I have set a small initial and max amount of 2MB to 50MB on my system drive (C) which is recommended since you do not want a large swap file on the same HDD as your OS, but that does not show neither. Why did the system not create the other Swap Files? Does it have to need it before it creates it?

In this case, I will have two of these removable hard drives, only one of which will be in use at any time, swapping in and out with each other every week.Since these hard drives will also contain the OS, how do I deal with XP licensing and authentication? Since there's only *one* computer, can I install and authorize a single copy of XP (Pro) on both removable hard drives? It does not need to hot-swap and I doubt I am breaching the Microsoft EULA because I could only use it on one PC at a time.I believe that the activation is based on points gathered from the items installed in each PC it is installed on and they would differ from PC to PC. Especially things like the NIC with it's own MAC address.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem.
- I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery.
- I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install.
- I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help.
- I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters.
- i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios.
I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
