My girlfriend's computer displays Removable Drives G:, H:, I:, J:, K:. There are no removable drives on this system except when we download pictures from the digital camera. Then we get an additional Removable Drive L:. Any idea what is causing this
View 2 RepliesMy operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. View 6 Replies View RelatedIt seems to be performing fine in most respects, but when you I go to save a file (any file through any program) and click on "My computer", there are a number of "Ghost Drives" that appear lettering from F to M. If I click on the "My computer" icon on the desktop, there are only the basic drives listed ( C: D: E in addition to M: which is the drive letter that was arbitrarily assigned by the computer for my Flash Drive where I run a great deal of portable programs from. Some days there are only a few ghost drives, and I ignore it and move one, but today I'm alarmed by the number of drives that are popping up
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows XP Professional SP2 on an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe MB. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.

Dont know where they came from, but every time I start or re-start my PC the "SafelyRemove Hardware" icon appears in the right bottom of my screen. View 8 Replies View RelatedSee attached screen shot. The drives: E, F, G, H, are all parts of my multi-card reader. One is for MemoryStick, another is SD Cards, CompactFlash, etc. Would it be alright to rename these to something more recognizable at a glance? (for example, rename "Removable Disk (H)" to "SD Card") Or will it somehow mess up the way the drives read the cards?

Anyway, it displays my fixed hard drive in my laptop just fine, however my SD/MMC cards, CD/DVD drives, external drives, etc.....do not show up. They are recognized however, and I can access my drive G: (the SD card) just fine through explorer and my computer. Is there any reason why they're not showing up in my disk management console? and is there a way to fix this?

more precisely, what leads XP to decide what is removable and what isn't? Example: System 1 is a P4 built in a Shuttle SFF case with the provided MB; 1 SATA hard disk with three partitions, 1 DVD-ROM on PATA, 1 floppy on floppy channel, 1 multi-format flash reader on USB; the system sees two of the flash slots as removable storage. System 2 is an Athlon 64 built on an Epox Nvidia+ MB. 1 SATA hard disk (with two partitions), 1 SATA DVD-ROM (using a bridge adapter), 4 hard disks on PATA, 1 floppy on floppy channel, 1 multi-format flash reader on USB; the system sees _both_ SATA drives as being removable along with two of the flash slots. Either system properly sees an external hard disk on USB or Firewire as being removable.

It even happens when I plug in my phone to charge through the USB port. Basically, it happens when something is connected in the USB port, card reader, removable drive, ect. View 5 Replies View RelatedI just changed my MoBo and then upgraded to Windows XP SP2. Everything is fine except My USB drives and Memory cards in the USB reader do not show up mapped in Explorer. They do show up in Computer Management. I can even assign drive letter there. But they will not show up in Eplorer even after I assign the drive letters.CD ROM and Hard disks all show up. Sandisk media player shows up too. But not USB drives. I have seen several threads with similar issues.

I understand that if I remove a USB drive without going through the process of using the "Safely Remove" icon I run the risk of getting a 'phantom' drive listed in Explorer. I have found this out the hard way! I have several partitions on the main drive and also other external hard drives - in getting these 'phantom' drives the drive letters somehow got reassigned without my intervention so now cause a problem accessing from my network. All my efforts to remove the entries have failed - I have tried through Device Manager but cannot figure out which entry would apply to the ones I have. I have one from a U3 drive which uses 2 drive letters and another single one. If I click on the "Safely Remove" icon I can get them to disappear until I reboot. I tried using those 'phantom' letters for other drives - again all goes well until I reboot and I am back to square one. I have searched the registry for the entries that set the drives but cannot figure that out either. Various trial deletions have no effect.

When you start the PC, it displays the Welcome screen, and you can click on either user's icon and Windows logs you in without asking for a password. So far so good. However, if you a)try and switch users, or b)logout and try to log in as either user, Windows now asks for a user password. But there is no password configured! You have to restart the PC every time you want to switch users.

I'm familiar with XP's search not finding files that actually exist (particularly when searching for files containing the specification) but this time it's finding files that, as far as I can see, don't exist. And it's doing it when searching for a file specification. Yes, I have view hidden files turned on.The only clue I have is that the files that do exist show the full path, e.g. C:LnDevetc while the files that don't exist show the path as etc. Search In is set to LnDev. Since I'm sending the results to a third party simply ignoring the bogus files isn't an option. So far the only 'solution' I've found is to set up a Win2K machine & conduct the search on it. Win2K shows the correct results, WinXP doesn't (verified on 2 machines)

The problem is that the entry still appears in the start menu (It is located in the All users directory/start menu. I cannot dlete/move or change it in any way. I have tried the following.1. View 2 Replies View RelatedThe Problem: I'm encoding videos in Adobe Media Encoder, and the video looks great, but the audio sounds horrible, even though on the source file, the audio is perfect. What do I do?? I acquired the source footage with Fraps. In the uncompressed Fraps version, the sound is perfect. Every time I try to encode it, I get the horrid noise you hear in the video, and then silence. My hypothesis: I'm guessing it has something to do with the source file, as I've encoded other videos with the same audio settings as this, and the audio turned out ok. But what could the difference by?

I have now taken out the har ddrive with Windows Vista on it, but it still gives me the choice of booting from either Windows XP or Windows Vista.I edited the Boot.ini file, but it didn't have Windows Vista listed as a bootable option, so I left the Boot.ini file alone. Before my daughter's Dell 8300 with XP Profesional HD crashed it started with up with WINDOWS XP Propfessional while it loads. I replaced the HD and reinstalled XP Pro with service pack 1 from the original CD supplied by Dell. So far so good. I went through all the updates, downloaded and installed service pack 2 for Pro. Now when XP loads it no longer displays "Professional" It displays as if its XP Home. In other words, Windows XP with out the Professional banner. When I check system info it states XP Professional is installed.
