I'm creating this topic on behalf of a friend; basically, his CD drive, his ipod, and every removable storage device is no longer showing up within Windows XP after he recently installed a program called "u3". The drives do not show up in my computer or device manager. He has since removed the program to no avail. I've never had a problem like this so I'm unsure how to diagnose it

Anyway, it displays my fixed hard drive in my laptop just fine, however my SD/MMC cards, CD/DVD drives, external drives, etc.....do not show up. They are recognized however, and I can access my drive G: (the SD card) just fine through explorer and my computer. Is there any reason why they're not showing up in my disk management console? and is there a way to fix this?

System 2 is an Athlon 64 built on an Epox Nvidia+ MB. 1 SATA hard disk (with two partitions), 1 SATA DVD-ROM (using a bridge adapter), 4 hard disks on PATA, 1 floppy on floppy channel, 1 multi-format flash reader on USB; the system sees _both_ SATA drives as being removable along with two of the flash slots. Either system properly sees an external hard disk on USB or Firewire as being removable.

View 5 Replies View Relatedso every time I log in to windows xp pro the system starts to load the user settings background and startup programs then I get a message that the system can't load one of the startup programs because the system is shutting down. then the system completely shuts off.After an exhaustive search online I found the recovery/copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe fix and tried that but I still get the auto logoff. I've tried repairing the installation using the OEM CD, but that only works for the first login. after that, same issue. I've run antivirus and spyware apps to check the system, but found nothing (I did this inbetween repairs). After 6 times of going through this I'm ready to reinstall from scratch. It just annoys me that windows can break so easily. Did I meniton I hate windows? Anything you could suggest, would be appreciated. I wait to here from someone in the forum before tackling such a HUGE project as to reinstall Windows and all my programs and data.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just finished rebuilding my PC and Installed Windows Xp 64 edition since I already had it sitting on my desk. Figured I might as well to compliment the new 64bit CPU. Anyways, everything is running great except for a few 3rd party programs I like to used with a few games. I want to install regular XP Pro but have my HD as one single 80gig partition. My question is, Is it possible to have 2 selectable bootable OS's on the same partition? If so, how and if not, Is there a way to downgrade from 64bit of windows to standard 32 without formating the drive? Worst comes to worst, I could reformat and reinstall everything all over again but I would rather avoid that if possible.

The images tend to support the explanation of the text, but they aren't there. The files themselves are still there and I can use them in the Mouse Pointers setting in Control Panel, but now the icons are all the same IN THE EXPLORER DISPLAY: a bland pointer with a star at the end of it on a piece of paper background. At first, I thought maybe it was a setting in Folder Options in Control Panel, but I realized it's not a matter of file associations. I don't need to open them except in the Mouse Pointers setting, which as I said works.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was testing my FTP server tonight and when I connect to the home directory there's two folders that show up (RECYCLER and System Volume Information) in the home directory that shouldn't be there. When I go into my home directory in Windows Explorer these folders don't show up there, even if I choose to show the hidden files. If I can't get these folders to show up in Windows Explorer I can't exclude them from showing up in my FTP Server software. Is it possible that they show up in my FTP client because I'm connecting to the same machine the server is on? That's all I can come up with.

While attempting to prep for a larger hard drive, I noticed that Disk management isn't showing any HD partitions. It does show the CD ROM device. It will not display USB external hard drive partitions but will display USB CD ROM devices. Device manager and explorer will display hard drives/partitions just fine. At this same time, I found that a scheduled chkdsk /f will not run. The PC just boots normally. Defrag will not run either. I was able to run sfc /scannow plus the Lenovo "disk doctor" utility and nothing is reported to be amiss. Another broken item was system restore. It was enabled but no restore points were available.

My computer at home has OS Xp and a few programs installed on the c drive which has a partition size of 10 gb, now all the programs should be using about 3 gb of space but it shows that 7 gb is in use. I check the c drive for temp and chk files and there are none. Select all the files including the ones that are hidden and take properties to find out the space they are on and it shows that it is 3 gb. What can possibly be holding back the other 4 gb and is there a way to free the space without formating the computer?
View 8 Replies View RelatedXP kept giving me pop ups saying that i have a danerously low disk space.. i deleted all extra files and music and etc and i was fine for a few weeks but lately its doing the same thing. there are 4 accounts on this computer and two of which refuse to log onto the internet (NetZero) one of them freezes whenever you click anything that isnt the start menu.. actually if you click something the whole screen blinks and only the backround is visible for a second and then all the icons return.i cant get into hijackthis to run it and i cant use ad aware because my definitions are a month old and it refuses to dowload new ones, the erro message says that the files cant be read. spybot works but then when it comes time to delete files i get this message " unexpected error in fixing problems (stream-schreibfehler)"

Although they still show in My Computer, they do not show up in Windows Explorer anymore, unless I select them in My Computer First - and then choose the "Folders" selection. do Not give me the standard answers which are for External drives that don't show up Anywhere .. because the drives DO show up in Disk Management, and they DO show up in My Computer, and this is Not a new drive that needs to be formatted.

In other folders they are visibile (even subfolders of the not working folder). When I choose any other view the filenames reappear just fine..In the 'Choose Details' window of the folder the 'Name' option is selected (it's not even possible to deselect it).

I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 installed & Autodesk Design Review 2010 installed.In windows explorer I can't see PDF or DWF files as thumbnails, I just get an icon image. I can see JPG, AVI, WMV, etc. They all give me a thumbnail image that is correct. I tried reinstalling Adobe & Autodesk Design Review and still nothing. I did however catch something odd. If I open Adobe, then click open, and browse to a folder within Adobe, I can see thumbnails for all file types, PDF, DWF & JPG. The same for Design Review, I can browse from withint the program, and it all looks correct. It's REALLY slow to generate the thumbnails, but they do eventually appear. And once generated, it's cached and the next program snaps them right up.

Over the last several weeks the computer freezes and I am puzzled about how to go through the troubleshooting. It is rather infrequent (maybe 4-5 times over 6-8 weeks?)When it freezes there is no apparent disk activity. The display appears perfectly normal. It appears to be random and infrequent. When it freezes there is no apparent response to either keyboard or mouse. Pushing the power button briefly does nothing, but pushing and holding the power button does result in the expected shutdown.

A few days ago, I noticed that it had suddenly stopped working for image files - video and html files still get a preview, but not images. It stopped working about the time when I installed an old version of Photoshop (7.0.1, the only one I had laying about for a quick job I needed it for...), and my efforts on Google seem to imply that it may be the culprit
