I have an external usb hd enclosure with an ntfs 320 gb IDE drive inside it.. when I connect it to my PC it shows up as local disk but I would rather it show as a removable disk so I can properly eject it. How would go about doing this?? thanks! (i have xp sp3)

The harddrive was not effected and stayed completely dry.I am basically trying to save the data on the harddrive and completely wipe/format it.I bought a 2.5" SATA > USB enclosure/caddy and put my laptop HDD into the enclosure. When I plugged the enclosure into my spare PC using the power/USB Y cable, the enclosure powers up and the LED light comes on. I can also feel/hear the laptop HDD inside spinning. A message comes up on the PC saying "New hardware found; USB mass storage device". Then about 1 minute later it shows the following message

Ive recently bought the "Enermax Laureate 3,5" HDD Enclosure Powered (USB 2.0)" and i put in a "Western Digital Caviar SE WD2500JB 250GB (7200rpm/uATA100)".
The problem is that i have a folder in there with the name "software" every time i want to access this file the external disk crashes and i need to turn off the power and turn it on again.The other folders works ok.i have erase and create again the file but nothing happens.i have the same folder with the same files in built-in hard disk and works perfecty.
I found my motherboard had blown so I purchased a new computer. This one has SATA drives rather than the IDE like my earlier one.I wanted to get some files off the old hard drives so purchased an Adaptec USB 2 Hard Drive Enclosure. It was recognized via plug and play (no drivers for the enclosure needed) and I was able to get some files off. However the next day when I tried to access the drive, it didn't show in Windows Explorer.I removed it from USB plug and tried the USB port next to the one I had previously tried. It recognized the drive and I was able to get more files.
However the same thing happened after I turned it off and rebooted the next day.I was unable to get it to work in either one of the front ports.I then tried one of the back ports, everything worked as before. Again, though, after turning it off, I am unable to access it through any of the 3 ports I've previously tried! What is going on? I still have stuff to get off it and I'm running out of ports.
my laptop gave me the blue screen and the boot disk could not get it back up.I purchased a plug n play USB 2.5" hard disk enclosure.I connected it to my second laptop and it recognizes it as another drive F:I can see all the directories and files, but cannot access them.I ran a Scan for Virus on the F drive and it found nothing.I get an error popup "File or directory is corrupted and unreadable" when I double click.

I have a very tired samsung X20 laptop. It has: 1.7 ghz, 2 gig ram, 250 gig western digital hard drive WD2500BEVE - with IDE type connection. Windows xp home with sp3.All has been rosey untill the connection where hard drive is placed onto the motherboard was broken. Not a problem I though as I have an enclosure to put the drive in then connect using the usb. All wired up I turned the computer on, nothing in the drive bay and the same hard drive in the enclosure connected via usb.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with a Compaq Presario running XP Home. I took the CD player out and cleaned out broken pieces of a CD that was destroyed in it. I got it cleaned out, put back together and now the pc won't boot up. I don't know what went wrong. Cleaning the CD player was quite easy and went back together okay. I hooked all of the wires up the way they were. On the front of this computer, there are two lights. One on the left which is green, and one on the right which is orange. Normally, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on first, then the orange light comes on during the loading process. You can see the boot process on the monitor.
Now, after hooking it back up today, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on, then the orange one comes on and goes back off after a moment. The green light stays on. Nothing at all shows up on the monitor, not even a blinking cursor -- it just stays blank. It stays that way indefinitely nothing. The monitor light is on so it is apparently getting power, but shows nothing. I'm sure the monitor is hooked up correctly; it can only be plugged in one way. While I had everything unhooked and was cleaning the CD player, I plugged the CD player back in for a moment and plugged in the power cord to the pc and pushed the power button. The power came on and allowed me to eject the empty tray. I did this to get the tray out of the way so I could clean beneath it. I tried to turn the power back off with the pc power button after ejecting the tray and it wouldn't seem to shut down.
so what i did was scan for and attempt of bad sectors, when it was done i restarted the computer, then a blue screen pop up reading and checking for errors the last time i check it was on 33% so i was just sitting watching tv and all of the sudden my power for the whole house went out for about couple of min then when i turn on the computer, i tells me if i want to reboot in safe mode or normal, so i pick normal(tried safe mode also same thing happened) when it start loading a blue screen pop up saying A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen apperas again follow these steps Disable or uninstall ant anti-virus, disck defragmentation or back up utilities. Check your hard drive fongiuration, and check for any updated drives. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

i've tried to install drivers for the computer and noticed an error "could not access C:Windows" so i checked and the local disc is actually labeled H!I've changed C (which is a removeable drive) to X so C is avaliable, but i am unable to rename the Local Disc to C, i think because it's in use, how can i get round this?
I cannot install a driver as it by default goes to C:.
when I open My Computer, it has a list a couple things;Hard Disk Drives

I can format it but it is pointless because it has 0 free used space. I thought if I did that maybe I would be able to erase it, but that didn't work either. When i double click on any local disk (Local Disk(C) ,(DVD-RW Drive (D) ,(CD-RW Drive (E) or any Removable Disk it will not open directly, it opens a search window. I have to open the the drop down box and select open. I know this was caused by a virus that no longer exist on my PC.

bought a new portable HDD -Western Digital Passport 320GB, and I formatted it to NTFS on my laptop on XP. My main gaming PC has Windows 7 x64 on it and when I got home from my holiday I transferred my files to it and put BitLocker on it.Once I had done this I plugged it back into my laptop with XP on it, and it picks it up as Local Disk (F: ) and says it needs to be formatted. Why would this be? I thought okay, so I took off BitLocker off of it on Windows 7, and plugged it back in, and it was still saying it. What is the problem here? I right clicked it and it said the FileSystem is RAW, which didn't make sense as I formatted it to NTFS on the same computer.

So I know that the folders in the C: are system folders but what if they are not in a folder and are out side of any folder. I have many files that are random that I can not open. I have cleaned out my temporary internet files, history, cookies, and deleted a bunch of music files for some space on my drive after getting these messages. Luckily i saved them on a online sharing drive so i didnt lose them all but I am basically wondering why my computer is using up sooo much hard drive space in such a short period of time. Just today i shut the computer off and let it sit for hours hoping that the problem would go away and when i started it back up right away i got a low disk space error. Now After deleting music it said i had over 600 MB of space on the hard drive and the problem was fixed. Not even 20 seconds later i get the error again and it said i only had 180 MB of space. Why would it be doing this ? Do I have a virus ? I ran AVG and it came clean, found no virus or anything.

It's original capacity is 15GB, and now it's become 930MB. That was not all of a sudden of course, but it's just too much, especially that I do not install new programs in it.I used to open 'Properties > Disk Cleanup', where I would clear all System Restore points except the most recent one. Now Disk Cleanup loading process hangs, and I can't get into its menus. Is there other ways to manage System Restore other than 'Control Panel > System > System Restore'?
