When I look at the XP Dish management window, I see an unnamed 5Gb section to the left of C and D drives.It is subtitled (EISA configuration), what is this for? Also the XP help says that there should be a FREE SPACE optoin on the rt-clk menu of the lofical drives. I only see delete. Am I looking at the wrong place? (reason: I would like to create a new logcal drive.
View 3 RepliesThis is my wife's Lenovo T61 and I've posted this in the laptop forums. While attempting to prep for a larger hard drive, I noticed that Disk management isn't showing any HD partitions. It does show the CD ROM device. It will not display USB external hard drive partitions but will display USB CD ROM devices. Device manager and explorer will display hard drives/partitions just fine. At this same time, I found that a scheduled chkdsk /f will not run. The PC just boots normally. Defrag will not run either. I was able to run sfc /scannow plus the Lenovo "disk doctor" utility and nothing is reported to be amiss. Another broken item was system restore. It was enabled but no restore points were available.

Also there is no right click options when I try to use them on the partitions.Check the picture attached.Probably a microsoft tech would know the answer.

My computer at home has OS Xp and a few programs installed on the c drive which has a partition size of 10 gb, now all the programs should be using about 3 gb of space but it shows that 7 gb is in use. I check the c drive for temp and chk files and there are none. Select all the files including the ones that are hidden and take properties to find out the space they are on and it shows that it is 3 gb. What can possibly be holding back the other 4 gb and is there a way to free the space without formating the computer?
View 8 Replies View RelatedXP kept giving me pop ups saying that i have a danerously low disk space.. i deleted all extra files and music and etc and i was fine for a few weeks but lately its doing the same thing. there are 4 accounts on this computer and two of which refuse to log onto the internet (NetZero) one of them freezes whenever you click anything that isnt the start menu.. actually if you click something the whole screen blinks and only the backround is visible for a second and then all the icons return.i cant get into hijackthis to run it and i cant use ad aware because my definitions are a month old and it refuses to dowload new ones, the erro message says that the files cant be read. spybot works but then when it comes time to delete files i get this message " unexpected error in fixing problems (stream-schreibfehler)"
View 1 Replies View RelatedIv'e installed XP pro on my new computer.after installing all the software i need on the computer i checked how much disk space i'm using before creating an image, and then i encountered a strange thing.When i measure th used disk space using ALT+ENTER from the root directory all the file amounts to about 9GB (all visible and all accounted), but when i check the disk properties it reports over 20GB used.When i created the image, the file weighed over 20GB also even thought i don't have 20GB of files.I know for sure that this is very unlikely that i'm actually using 20GB and that ALT+ENTER reports a wrong size because on my other computer.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI don't get it. the more i go on, the more and more disk space seems to vanish into thin air. xp usually takes a couple of gigs up on the hard disk, right? maybe 5 gigs at the very most. i've got 8 gigs taken up by videos in one folder. the programs i've got installed are negligable. the program files folder is 500mb. and yet my disk only has 20 gigs spare on a 40 gig hard disk. i've looked in every folder on the hard disk and i simply can't find any folders with anything of any great size in it. i've defragged the hard drive.

The primary C drive has the OS on it and it is only about 14GB, and my entire disk is about 50GB, the unallocated space is about 34 GB. I have tried to expand the primary partition unsuccessfully. Do I have to reload the entire OS ? I do not have the origional disk to reload the OS. It is a sony PCG-CRT160 computer with 500 mb ram and approximately a 50 GB primary drive that was partitioned when I got it.

F says [Active].G says nothing, just [Healthy]Major problem is that in the board also see another HD which I do not have Title of this HD is [Missing] with a red X on it and the description is [Failed].Its in the same size with F so I think its some problem from the time I tried set this disk as primary in order to put xp in it (its a sata on an A8V Deluxe which requires f6 etc etc).So... may i choose delete this fake disk?PS. I was having trouble with installing flash for chrome.It always reads the wrong disk because I put in a new HD.My main one is F:/, but flash tries to install on C:I tried to change the drive letter but disk management "fails to initialize" and thus won't start. I tried MS's solution (regsvr32 c:winntsystem32dmdskmgr.dll) but I get an error LoadLibrary("c:winntsystem32dmdskmgr.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found.

c:windowssystem32dmremote.exe:*:enabled and I've also added port exceptions for ports 135 and 445 and I'm still unable to use Disk Manager to manage remote computer.I keep getting the following message: The Disk Management console failed to conect to the remote computer because the Disk Management remoting sevices is not in the Windows Firewall exception list. Add the Disk Management remoting service (dmremote.exe) to the Windows Firewall exception list and try again.
Windows won't let me partition it from disk management. I'm at lost here. I'm trying to start fresh with a new install of win xp. Got to the setup part where i choose which parition to use, but it says I can't delete the partition because there are necessary files needed on it etc. etc... So I get a win98 boot disk to try to manually format and get to the A: prompt, and it wont recognize my C:
View 3 Replies View RelatedSystem crashed last night with a Kernel Stack Inpage Error, but restarted fine ... while diagnosing, I tried to get in to Disk Management through Admin Tools/Computer Management, and received the error, "Unable to connect to Logical Disk Manager service". I checked, and the service was disabled (why?), so I set it for manual and restarted it, still received the error.Oddly, I was able to start it from a command prompt, which then allowed it to start from Admin Tools. What just happened here? Is that service normally disabled? If not, what would cause it to become disabled? Could a virus, worm, or rootkit have snuck in?

1 - Boot Windows XP Prof SP2 x86
2 - Boot Windows XP Prof SP2 x64
3 - Store my Data Folders and Files separately (to do Backups from one place).
4 - Boot to Ubuntu 7.10 and alternatively
5 - Boot to Ubuntu Server
6 - Create System Backups for my Laptop (6.1), old PC (6.2) and for this new PC (6.3).
When I go to Disk Management, my hard drives are not listed. They are visable in My Computer. Nothing is listed except my DVD drive.The reason I was in Disk Management in the first place, I plugged in my backup external drive (500GB Seagate FreeAgent Desktop) and it did not show up in My Computer, so I thought it was a drive letter assignment issue. So I go to Disk Managment and none of my hard drives are listed!

I made a disk clean up to partition D: and there was 3GB of system restore files!!! maybe coz i deleted 6GB earlier anyway i deleted the system restore files
Only NTFS partions can have files with file size more than 4GB..i hope theres nothing wrong with my windows or my hard disk..and i wanna know if theres a way to move that ISO image..thanx in advance.
I have 80GB hard drive on my computer. I only have 31GB free space. My total size is 74.5GB. So I'm assuming the 5.5 is made up of programs needed to run the computer. I have deleted all my music video and audio files/folders which were taking up even more space. I've tried defragmentation, emptying the recycle bin etc etc. I've uninstalled some rarely used programs. In my Program Files there are 49 Items taking up 34.3GB of space. Surely this is too much, I do have Nero and Roxio which take a lot of space. Looking at 'Control Panel' I see 'Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1', 'Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2' and also 'Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2'. Do I really need 1.1 and 2.0 if I have 3.0

First thing I did when I had it up and running was to look at the Properties for the Drive.I shows it as being 7.82 Gb. I phoned my installer and told him about my problem and he suggested that I go to the Seagate Website and get a Seagate disk overlay.

After the first repair the computer worked fine, until I installed SP2, and lost the taskbar, and couldn't fix that (you can view that thread here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...tart-menu.html. After the recent repair everything went fine until I tried to install SP2 again. I will start the computer, and windows will load. Everything is fine until the login screen appears (windows XP home ed.). The screen lasts for about 1.5 seconds and then it goes BSOD.

The old XP Home was on drive C and the new XP Pro is on drive E. I am now ready to reclaim drive C disk space and tried formatting it. However, it appers as the "system" drive, while the new HD (E) appears as "boot". I realized I wont be able to format it until I make E drive system and boot together (which usually appears as "system"). Eventually, I would prefer that the new disk will be labeled C
View 1 Replies View RelatedOK,i need some help here,after changing desktop casing,I noticed that my 2nd IDE Hard drive/HD is not on "My Computer",check on the Device manager HD is present and when i tried to see the details of my HD on Disk Management HD is not present,so I've rebooted HD is present in BIOS.Things I did:1.Fix windows using recovery console2.Connect/reconnect cables3.Check if HD is still working(100% sure it's working)4.Updated driversAdditional info's"HD is Seagate Barracuda(Master-Slave set up), OS Windows XP sp3**Please note that i can't see the HD on my disk management like any other people would do to fix this problem***If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.
