Sep 17, 2009
When I open my Administratives Tools, "Computer Management console" the "disk defragmenter", the "disk management" are VERY SLOW 2Respond and even freeze (not responding) when I clic on a any of the disk task.I run Win XP SP3 very well so far.. and I had since "few days" problems with a VERY LONG black screen before the logon screen.http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6142_102-0.html?threadID=358991 .first time I resolve it just with a restore back but it begins again.

It says that TOTAL SIZE = 39 GB And Free Space = 5 GB Which means that the size of all files on C is 34 GB But when I select all files including Hidden files and Right Click> Properties, its size of all files is only 27 GB.I did clear recycle bin and disk defragmenter C, but still the same. So why is that?

I do this, it tells me I have to restart my computer and I do this. For some reason when it scanes, it goes up to 17% at stage 2 of Chkdsk and it freezes. How can I fix Chkdsk from freezing?

If I go into Drive Management under My Computer, and I see two "disks" both in the bar for "Disk 1" does this mean that all of Disk 1 has been split into two partitions but is still one physical disk?

go to start > you click all programs > you select system tools > and click disk defragmemter. Disk defragmenter opens up. You click analyze. It comes up with 'You do not need to defragment this volume' You click report. You find out that the disk it only 3% fragmented. The bar that displays estimated disk usage before disk degramentation is mostly colored red, except for blocks of blue here and there. You look down at the bottom and realize that red stands for 'fragmented files' You say to your self, The report said disk did NOT need defragmenting. The bar clearly shows the disk is fragmented.

Hello folks, We are about to push a policy to remove everyone from the local administrators group on their local PCs. We are also creating a template to allow all users to access certain hives in the registry. Is there a hive or key that could unlock Disk Defragmenter for anyone to access.

When I try to open and run my disk defragmenter, a message comes up with the following:
"MMC cannot open the file CWINDOWS/system32/dfrg.msc.This may be because the file does not exist, is not as MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient rights to the files."I really have no idea what this means.

I have been attempting to defragment my hard drive a multitude of times with both command-line and from windows tools. When i analyze the drive, i get the report that i need to defrag the volume, i do so...only to wait for less than 2-5 mins and receive a report stating the fragmentation status of the drive, which was exactly the same amount of fragmentation the analysis reported!

I hope this is a simple problem, but each time I try to defrag my C drive, or even just analyze it, windows says it is out of memory and Disk Defragmenter could not start. However I am able to defrag the D drive just fine.

On our other machine we have a 70 GB hard drive. It is partioned C: 20 GB and D: 50. All the program files are on C. When I try to defrag C I get the message "Volume C has only 4% free space available for use by Disk Defragmenter...it requires at least 15%". I uninstalled some inessential programs and got it up to 9%. In my wifes user account there is one folder My Pictures with 2.9GB. Can I move that onto the D partion to create the needed space?

Janet has a "Time" Notebook which has developed an odd effect when scrolling ( pages, or lines). Instead of the page or line moving downwards smoothly, it ripples.this happens whether she uses the built-in mouse or one plugged into a port. It's a PS2, if that is of any use.She has a new optical mouse and XP found the software for it but the rippling happens with the new mouse as well.Any ideas would be most gratefully received. The Notebook isn't here with me.We've run Spybot, Disk Cleanup, Defragmenter, and a scan when the computer is switched on. She uses Zone Alarm and AVG Antivirus.I downloaded XTeq Setup and set the number of lines to scroll (3) but the same thing happens.

Control Panel-->Administrative Tools-->Computer Management-->Disk Management, I have 3 HDs: C, F, G I see them in the board as healthy.C with the XP in it says [System].
F says [Active].G says nothing, just [Healthy]Major problem is that in the board also see another HD which I do not have Title of this HD is [Missing] with a red X on it and the description is [Failed].Its in the same size with F so I think its some problem from the time I tried set this disk as primary in order to put xp in it (its a sata on an A8V Deluxe which requires f6 etc etc).So... may i choose delete this fake disk?PS. I use no partitions, just whole disks. Board says me that C & F are Basic type. G and [missing] are Dynamic.

I was having trouble with installing flash for chrome. It always reads the wrong disk because I put in a new HD.My main one is F:/, but flash tries to install on C:I tried to change the drive letter but disk management "fails to initialize" and thus won't start. I tried MS's solution (regsvr32 c:winntsystem32dmdskmgr.dll) but I get an error LoadLibrary("c:winntsystem32dmdskmgr.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found.

When I try to reactivate this one drive I get an error:INTERNAL Error - The disk group contains no valid configuration copies (C10000B6).As I understand, something happened to LDM on that disk.I know, the disk itself is good, the data is there..And I know it is possible to restore that information... only with Microsoft help or help of the professional or enthusiast who knows this subject.

System crashed last night with a Kernel Stack Inpage Error, but restarted fine ... while diagnosing, I tried to get in to Disk Management through Admin Tools/Computer Management, and received the error, "Unable to connect to Logical Disk Manager service". I checked, and the service was disabled (why?), so I set it for manual and restarted it, still received the error.Oddly, I was able to start it from a command prompt, which then allowed it to start from Admin Tools. What just happened here? Is that service normally disabled? If not, what would cause it to become disabled? Could a virus, worm, or rootkit have snuck in?

This is my wife's Lenovo T61 and I've posted this in the laptop forums. While attempting to prep for a larger hard drive, I noticed that Disk management isn't showing any HD partitions. It does show the CD ROM device. It will not display USB external hard drive partitions but will display USB CD ROM devices. Device manager and explorer will display hard drives/partitions just fine. At this same time, I found that a scheduled chkdsk /f will not run. The PC just boots normally. Defrag will not run either. I was able to run sfc /scannow plus the Lenovo "disk doctor" utility and nothing is reported to be amiss. Another broken item was system restore. It was enabled but no restore points were available.

When I go to Disk Management, my hard drives are not listed. They are visable in My Computer. Nothing is listed except my DVD drive. The reason I was in Disk Management in the first place, I plugged in my backup external drive (500GB Seagate FreeAgent Desktop) and it did not show up in My Computer, so I thought it was a drive letter assignment issue. So I go to Disk Managment and none of my hard drives are listed!

I have run a windows repair twice, and no luck either time. After the first repair the computer worked fine, until I installed SP2, and lost the taskbar, and couldn't fix that (you can view that thread here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...tart-menu.html. After the recent repair everything went fine until I tried to install SP2 again. I will start the computer, and windows will load. Everything is fine until the login screen appears (windows XP home ed.). The screen lasts for about 1.5 seconds and then it goes BSOD.

I have installed a new hard drive and installed a new XP Pro on it. I kept the old XP Home for some time untill I'm happy with the new installation. The old XP Home was on drive C and the new XP Pro is on drive E. I am now ready to reclaim drive C disk space and tried formatting it. However, it appers as the "system" drive, while the new HD (E) appears as "boot". I realized I wont be able to format it until I make E drive system and boot together (which usually appears as "system"). Eventually, I would prefer that the new disk will be labeled C

Here's my problem, for no apparent reason my hard drives are not listed under the disk management utility(cd drives appear). They appear on "my computer" correctly, they show up in "Device Manager"(and I have no yellow question marks). In addition in "disk defragmenter" they appear but I'm unable to even run the analyse command(using other software I'm able to defragment them).I've tried EaseusParttion Manager, but the drives don't appear as well.I'm not able to use USB drives as well(I assume it is related), they appear in the right side of the task bar and they appear in "device manager" but not in "my computer" nor "Disk Management
