Disk Defragmenter Not Working
May 8, 2007I tried everything I could find to fix it and nothing.There is no error messages just does not respond.Someone said to look in windows for an inf folder, I do not have one.

Hard Disk Free Space: Clear Recycle Bin And Disk Defragmenter C?
May 1, 2007It says that TOTAL SIZE = 39 GB And Free Space = 5 GB Which means that the size of all files on C is 34 GB But when I select all files including Hidden files and Right Click> Properties, its size of all files is only 27 GB.I did clear recycle bin and disk defragmenter C, but still the same. So why is that?

Feb 12, 2008I cant seem to get the defragmenter working.I have searched and did some troubleshooting so ill explain. My C: is dirty. CHKDSK runs at bootup every time.When I go to defrag, I get the message: CHKDSK is scheduled to run, please run CHKDSK /f.Here is were it gets complicated. I have run CHKDSK /f and it doesnt do anything. I have tried to disable CHKDSK, nothing. Its not in startup under msconfig, I even tried reediting the registry for a non startup CHKDSK. The problem is basically that CHKDSK doesnt work. Its looping back and telling my computer that it has not run when it has.When it runs, I have some unreadable files. 4 to be exact. I have searched and troubleshot numerous things, I even reformated my C: drive. Ran Anti Virus, all came back negative.

Aug 7, 2004For some reason when I tried to Defrag my (D drive it tells me that, DIsk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: (D Please run Chkdsk /f. I do this, it tells me I have to restart my computer and I do this. For some reason when it scanes, it goes up to 17% at stage 2 of Chkdsk and it freezes. How can I fix Chkdsk from freezing?

It comes up with 'You do not need to defragment this volume' You click report. You find out that the disk it only 3% fragmented. The bar that displays estimated disk usage before disk degramentation is mostly colored red, except for blocks of blue here and there. You look down at the bottom and realize that red stands for 'fragmented files' You say to your self, The report said disk did NOT need defragmenting. The bar clearly shows the disk is fragmented.

Mar 13, 2006I have been attempting to defragment my hard drive a multitude of times with both command-line and from windows tools. When i analyze the drive, i get the report that i need to defrag the volume, i do so...only to wait for less than 2-5 mins and receive a report stating the fragmentation status of the drive, which was exactly the same amount of fragmentation the analysis reported!

When I try to defrag C I get the message "Volume C has only 4% free space available for use by Disk Defragmenter...it requires at least 15%". I uninstalled some inessential programs and got it up to 9%. In my wifes user account there is one folder My Pictures with 2.9GB. Can I move that onto the D partion to create the needed space?

Aug 26, 2006i've been having slow computer problems. lots of generic host errors and some programs that would hang and freeze the computer. i went to the Security area of this site for help. i had no major problems just a lot of startup programs i didn't need.i downloaded two programs to help me with that. then i decided to run defrag. that froze at 3% done. i also tried check disk, i got the screen to restart the computer. it was running fine. i had lots of bad sector stuff in stage 4. i went to bed at 24% next morning it still was at 24%. we left it on and it still would not move. so we restarted. i went and did a few more things, deleting things i no longer wanted and so on. last night i tried check disk again and i went to bed at 20% (tired). this morning there were no bad sector items, but it was still at 20%. i gave it a bit longer, but still nothing.

Mar 1, 2007I'll try to keep this short! It started with a trojan that got out of control, but someone had put an unlicenced version of XP on our system, so we never had SP2 which was not ideal. Once the system hung indefinitely, I reinstalled XP (licensed) in a separate directory and backed up all the user data ready to just wipe the slate clean as I'd read bad things about having the same OS on one partition.
Now I bit the bullet and did a "format c:" in the command line, then booted to the licenced XP Pro disc and tried to install... it said I already had a NTFS structure in place, but then failed to copy any files to it, and now fails to see the hard disk at all during install ("cannot find hard disk"). I think I need to hit f6 during the XP installation and throw some files from the A drive, but where do I get them? I have a motherboard CD that has no useful features unless your OS is active, and the website doesn't lead me very far. It is a Shuttle MK35N SktA VIA-KM266, 266FSB USB2 MicoATX (DDR) - if that means anything to anyone?! I think BIOS sees it on startup, but doesn't connect to it. There's a bit of text top left with a model number, anyway...

Mar 29, 2006I recently acquired a 64-bit processor, so I decided to try out the 64-bit version of Windows. I backed up everything on C: and moved it to G:. Then I deleted the C: partition and installed Windows XP 64-bit version on that partition. Then I decided that I really didn't like it, so I ran the Windows Setup disk and deleted the C: partition, created it again, and voila! No more XP 64. Then I tried to boot back into my original version of XP Pro and it gave me the "NTLDR is missing" error. Reloaded XP 64 on the C: partition, copied NTLDR from the XP cd over to my D: drive, deleted the C: partition, and just left it alone this time. Now I get an error with something along the lines of "HARD DISK ERROR...Restart Computer".

I orginally bought the computer to surf and now I want start playing with it. I have windows 2000. I would like to copy some programs and I can't get the floppy disk A to work. What do I do next? Jun 25, 2005A couple of things are driving me insane.When I press F8 regardless of my choice the system will allow me to boot only in normal mode. I.E. If I choose "Safe mode with command prompt" and hit enter, the next screen shows first line "Please select the operating system to start" second line "Windows XP professional" highlighted, third line "Use the up and down key to... Press enter to choose" and at the bottom "For troubleshooting and advanced startup options press F8" and the last line, in highlighted blue "Safe mode with command prompt". I then press enter and after scrolling thru all the lines the system reboots to the F8 boot options.Only "boot in normal mode" gets me out of the loop.

I have bought the current hard disk one month back due to failure of the previous one. Both are of Seagate. My PC stuck up suddenly while working with the noise from hard disk ( clicking noise ) When I restarts the PC the PC stops booting after the BIOS screen with the error messages like "unable to load OS" or "disk not found". If I remove and replace the hard disk connection, it works normally. But, the PC stuck up after 1 day or after few hours. I have performed the hard disk self tests with Seatools software from Seagate.

Sep 27, 2007I'm running XP Home on a Sony VAIO. The PC has a partitioned HD: C (main), & D (storage). I defrag every night.
This evening, I got the dreaded "not enough disc space to complete disc defragmenter" message. Suddenly tonight I'm showing only 2% free space on drive C. I went in and changed my System Restore percentage from 12% to 6%. Now I'm showing 6% free space (but still can't defrag).
I shouldn't have had to change my System Restore percentage tho. I'm sure that's not the culprit. Up until last night the C drive was nowhere near this full. Something's there tonight that wasn't yesterday. ...A whole LOT of something. The Defrag graph is showing a nearly FULL C drive with a LOT of red "fragmented" files"
I've been doing a bit of downloading, but after it's on the desktop (part of C), I move it to the D storage drive (which has a LOT of free space remaining).
Something's fishy. I'm no expert, but I'm thinking I need to find some type of application to tell me what's suddenly on that drive taking up all this space. Anyone have any helpful suggestions?
Internet Is Working For Some Programs / Firefox Is Working But IE7 Is Not
Dec 26, 2007Whenever I start up IE7 "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" pops up. The problem is my internet is working for SOME programs. Firefox is working fine, but IE7 is not. Also Steam, Ventrilo, and AIM work fine, but programs such as, UBI Internet, and Gas Powered Games Internet, and almost all games do not work. It says Winsock error problem, but I have fixed the registry keys and followed all instructions.
