F8 Boot Options Not Working And Disk Checking Being Cancelled
Jun 25, 2005
A couple of things are driving me insane. When I press F8 regardless of my choice the system will allow me to boot only in normal mode. I.E. If I choose "Safe mode with command prompt" and hit enter, the next screen shows first line "Please select the operating system to start" second line "Windows XP professional" highlighted, third line "Use the up and down key to... Press enter to choose" and at the bottom "For troubleshooting and advanced startup options press F8" and the last line, in highlighted blue "Safe mode with command prompt". I then press enter and after scrolling thru all the lines the system reboots to the F8 boot options.Only "boot in normal mode" gets me out of the loop.
i recently wanted to installed a few windows components from the windows xp installation cd. during the install i cancelled it. but the next day when i booted up the pc i got two options in the boot menu. It asked wether i wanted to boot "windows xp home edition" or "windows xp setup" How do i get rid of this "windows xp setup" boot option?
I'm trying to do a full disk check in my XP machine, so I went to the "Local Disk (C Properties"->Tools-"Error-checking" and clicked "Check Now." Then I marked "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors," and then it gives me the message that it has to wait until the next restart before it'll work.
I have a computer that I formatted the hard drive on. Then installed Windows XP Pro. When it boots up, it goes to a black screen and has Windows XP Pro and Windows XP listed with the Win XP Pro selected and boots to it in 15 seconds or so if nothing is selected. I have read somewhere about this before and have NO clue where I read it, but does anyone know how to get rid of the option (Win XP) that really doesn't even exist on the hard drive?
I set Windows to check my main hard drive for errors on my Dell E310 the next time it boots, so I shut it down and then rebooted. It started to load Windows, but after the loading bar went through 2 and a half passes, it just stopped. I figured this was normal for the error-checking program, but I left it for a couple of hours and came back. It still hadn't started, so I shut it down and booted to safe mode and did a system restore back to the beginning of yesterday. Right now I have it booting again and it stopped at the same spot.
I am using windows XP for last 2-3 years. My folder option has disappeared from the menu "View" and does not show any result when I double click folder options in the control panel.I thought I have virus in my PC but i have cleaned it with the help of antivirus and your forum.
The blue one day I cannot access Internet Options from the tools menu in IE7 on Vista Ultimate. I also cannot open Internet options from the control panel. When I click on it nothing happens. I tried to run Spybot. I tried running IE7 as administrator and it says: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. I checked and IE7 has full permissions and no restrictions. I am also logged in as an administrator. I tried sfc /scannow in an elivated command prompt and it said it found errors but couldn't fix them. I also ran system restore and it cannot restore anything no matter what date I choose. Can anyone explain what suddenly happened to my Vista out of the blue? I run the latest Mcafee by the way.
Dell xps 400, pentium2.80 ghz dual core, 1 gig ram, win xp media center op sys. Just bought a new microsoft cordless mouse with usb connection for transmitter. With mouse plugged in my monitor will not power down after the amount of minutes I have set in power options nor will it go to screen saver if I choose a screen saver which I did just to test. So, I turned off screen saver and just chose in the power option panel to turn off monitor after five minutes, chose to hibernate never or suspend never. Will not work with mouse plugged in, but will work if I unplug mouse.
I have a problem with windows 2k or at least when it's booting up.When my computer boots, it asks me if I want to run win xp, win 2k, or win 2k start up. I just want it to boot directly to 2k without prompting me.
I recently reformatted and repartitioned hard drive and reinstalled XP. I messed something up because now when I boot comp, I'm given three different Windows XP options to boot even though I have only one instance of XP installed. What do I have to do to get rid of the two unwanted boot options?
I've tried it in safe mode too, and I get the same message for defragmenter "disk defragmenter could not start", for scan disk "..could not complete scan ", and system restore just does not respond when I select the restore point, I can only close it.
When i booted up my pc to put some coursework on a usb stick, it failed to boot to xp. It went to the "xp was not shutdown properly, boot to safe mode, or last known working settings screen, ETC". None of the options work, i have tried all of them, safe mode and last known working settings included. When i select one of the options, the hardrive spins up, and then my gfx card bios info and mobo splash screen come on. Well, i think it might be because i ran a 'virus remover' for the game gmod, this was the first time the computer had been booted since i ran it.
I started having these problems a few days ago. The main one is that when I try to go to Tools/Internet Options in Internet Explorer,I get the message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer." I get a similar message when I try to save changes when exiting msconfig. Needless to say, I am the administrator and the only one who uses the computer, so it's not a restriction/permission issue. My problem is that my registry path doesn't match up to what is shown above. After I get to Policies/Microsoft there is no Internet Explorer folder in either of those two paths. If I start from CURRENT USER, the only folder under Policies/Microsoft is System Certificates, and if I start from LOCAL MACHINE, the only folders are Conferencing, System Certificates, Windows, and Windows NT. I tried searching the whole registry for "restrictions" and found nothing. So what do I do now?
I would like to get rid of the "Cancelled" and "Failed" entries in the Windows Update - Review your update history, because they are finally all corrected installed. How can i remove these enries from the history?
Really strange problem. Windows XP reports that I'm low on disk space. And if I open My Computer, right-click on the hard disk and go to Properties, it shows ~26GB of Used Space and ~4GB of Free Space. However, I do not understand what is taking up so much space. It is a new PC with very little data.Furthermore, if I 'Select All' on the contents of C:, and right-click for the properties of all files and folders, the Size on Disk only equals 11.6 GB, which seems more reasonable. (FYI, I have already set 'show hidden files and directories' in Folder Options)
my problem is that when I try to run the ''Regedit" or active any register key, I get this message "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer please contact your system administrator" and when I login as administrator I get the same message.
Error message "Operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Contact system administrator." I want to clear my cache. What do I do?
I'm trying to open web links and file links in any of the Office 2003 products, for example Outlook. I click the link to open it, and an error message appears: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.
i have an asus p5nsli, i cant see windows xp because of a new acer display driver that doesnt work, apparently. on bootup, when i press F8, i only get the options to boot from floppy, hd, or cd-drives....how can i get to safe mode? pressing delete gives me the bios, i've tried every key on the board.
Recently, I had to use the command "bootcfg /rebuild", which fixed a booting problem I was experiencing. However, now it asks what OS I'd like to boot from every time. The problem: It shows "Microsoft XP Home Edition" Twice. Is there any way to fix this and to just allow XP to boot automatically every time without prompt?
Isn't F8 supposed to bring up the boot options for win XP? It's not working. I've tried F1, F4, Esc, and Delete, F8 function is not working and that I'll need to fix this somehow.
Right now when I boot my screen I have like 4 different options for what OS I want. There Windows XP (which I usually click), a Skeleton Boot (some boot screen program I was screwing with), another Windows XP (haven't used it, maybe a previous installation?), and some other windows option that my computer first came with.
Anyways, I know that I only use the first one so is there a way to eliminate the other 3 from the menu? Ideally I would like to not even see the menu when I boot the computer, I'd like it to just go through to windows. I thought I remembered seeing a control panel or some settings for that area somewhere but I can't remember where.
I just install my xp To my System as a primary system os. and id like to install win 98 as a backup os. and is there any possiblity that i can boot my system to xp without going to that os choice menu? and from inside xp (after booting xp) transfer from win98 without rebooting again?
For the past two weeks, when I start or restart my Dell Dimension 8250 running Windows XP Home Edition, it passes through a blue page with a Windows label that says: "Checking the file system on C; The type of file is NTFS; Cannot open volume for direct access; Windows has finished checking the disk." Otherwise the computer seems to start up normally and operate as usual. Something has changed and I don't know what the problem may be.
we have an XP box at work we use for testing custom apps we create...we threw in an extra drive and put Vista on this drive just to test out our apps...after testing, we removed the drive (and hence Vista) leaving just the main drive with XP...our boot options still list Vista as a boot option..i know fixmbr works with XP, but there is another command (can't remember what it is, never used it) for Vista...using XP, can i use the fixmbr command to remove the Vista boot option? if not, how should i remove the second boot option from XP?
i used my Xp disk to partition my slave hd in my desktop since i have done this i get an option when i boot of two windows xp to start. The first has something to do with me mucking around with the slave drive and the second is my actual sytem os It automatically tries to boot from the first and faulters saying there is system files missing.I can boot from the second option fine but i dont want to allways have to be changing options everytime i reboot I would like to know if there is a way through my bios (or xp itself )that i can delete this option on booting
I have just got a new PC which came preloaded with XP Home. As I wanted to use XP Pro I nuked what was on there, or so I thought, and installed Pro from scratch. Now when I boot up (as distinct from booting it which I would like to do regularly,) when it starts it gives me a screen asking if I want to boot from XP Pro or XP Home etc. Is there anyway I can get rid of that first screen please?
