Backspace, Arrow Keys And Fn Keys Not Working
Apr 25, 2010I inadvertantly switched on sticky keys. I have since switched it off but my backspace, arrow keys and Fn keys no longer work.

Jan 2, 2008I have a computer that is stuck in a loop and won't boot into normal or safe mode. There is a blue screen flashing up, but way too quick for me to be able to see the STOP code.The problem I have is that the American Megatrends BIOS 2.51, has an option on the boot screen "Press F8 for BBS Popup". Therefore I can't use the F8 key to get into the Windows XP Advanced Options menu. Why the hell has a BIOS manufacturer hijacked an important Windows key? I have also tried pressing the F8 key AFTER the BIOS screen, but even by doing that you still get a boot order list by pressing F8, and not the Advanced Options menu.

all option are available for me to access, although the keyboard is non responsive (yes it works) & i am unable to select anything
after the timed countdown it starts to boot and get to the windows welcome screen and then hangs. no further progression from that point.
specs as i know are
win xp 2
512 ram
motherboard (asus i think)
rest is all on board

Sep 14, 2007I'm working on recovering a machine from a month-long period of time during which it was completely overrun with spyware and virues. Currently, I have the following issues to contend with: System Restore can only be activated or deactivated via direct registry edit. When you try from the System Properties window, it simply tells you that an error occurred and to try a restart. The advanced start menu options are blank. There are no options to turn off or on things like "Show Network Connections." The options can be turned on in the registry, but the options are missing altogether from the 'rt-click-on-the-start-button' process. Any instance of IE that is open shows in the taskbar as "Windows Explorer," rather than Internet Explorer.

1. At the Windows Welcome screen, arrow keys could move the user selection up & down, but no alphanumeric keys made any visible entry (dot) in password field. Clicking Shut Down and restarting corrected this (for now, anyway).

4. Clicking any of the "Learn About." links opens the help page in IE7, but with its contents crowded to the left and the yellow bar at the top. Clicking to allow blocked content (Are you sure? YES!) results in yet another dialog about an ActiveX control that "might be unsafe" but the only new ActiveX control on this PC is one from Symantec, installed during the NAV 2009 upgrade. NAV 2009 was the FIRST product I've run into that did NOT permit its EULA to be selected, printed or saved. I like to keep a record of things I've agreed to, but that text was out of reach! Sixteen screenshots later.

It used to, on my old computer, but now I have a new one, 250 GB 'split' into two drives of 125GB each, with Windows XP SP2 OEM Software.

The only thing I can think of is some time in the past I must have set it up as a short cut. But I don't know how to find out if I did. Jul 12, 2005I have a computer that I formatted the hard drive on. Then installed Windows XP Pro. When it boots up, it goes to a black screen and has Windows XP Pro and Windows XP listed with the Win XP Pro selected and boots to it in 15 seconds or so if nothing is selected. I have read somewhere about this before and have NO clue where I read it, but does anyone know how to get rid of the option (Win XP) that really doesn't even exist on the hard drive?

Dec 13, 2007I use XP Pro with service pack 2 and never had trouble with sound from my toggle keys. I go through control panel and the accessibility options then put a check mark in toggle keys hit apply and ok, the check mark disappears and I have no sound when I hit the cap lock button on the keyboard, the way I have used it before.I also click on the sound tab and put a check in the use sound sentry check box so it will flash the screen when I accidentally hit the cap lock button. I've never had a problem with these functions before now nothing will stay checked or function at all.

May 31, 2010I've got a very strange problem with my right click menu where if I right click something, file or empty space, the menu pops up with options missing. I'll open an application/program and the right click menu will lose some more options... eventually I'm left with no menu at all, I right click and nothing happens, and left click and I can see from the animations on buttons that the computer is recognising a click, but nothing happens. If I close a program, part of the menu comes back. This happens for any and every program, programs which I've been using for years. I always keep my antivirus software up to date and scans detect no viruses. I system restored back two months and the problem was still there. Today I wiped my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP as a last resort to get rid of this issue, and it's still there! I have no idea what it is, what's causing it or why it's happening, and I can't find any way to get rid of it other than continue to close programs to restore options, but that's not good enough because eventually I end up with no programs left to close and the only way for my clicks to work again is to reboot.

Jan 13, 2008When I open up the Start Menu on one of the accounts, there is nothing in the left-hand column. When I right click and get the Properties, and try to Customize the Menu, the options don't save, and I'm stuck with nothing. I've tried clicking on the Internet radio button for "Show on Start Menu". I click Ok, then Apply, and Finally Ok again. But when I go back to the menu, it still has nothing in the left-hand column.
The second thing I've noticed was under Folder Options -> View, I tried to check both the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" button, and also un-check "Hide extensions for Known File Types" and click on Apply, then Ok again. But still, these options don't save and are reset back to "Do not show hidden files", and "hide extensions".
Internet Options Not Working In Vista
Nov 6, 2007The blue one day I cannot access Internet Options from the tools menu in IE7 on Vista Ultimate. I also cannot open Internet options from the control panel. When I click on it nothing happens. I tried to run Spybot. I tried running IE7 as administrator and it says: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. I checked and IE7 has full permissions and no restrictions. I am also logged in as an administrator. I tried sfc /scannow in an elivated command prompt and it said it found errors but couldn't fix them. I also ran system restore and it cannot restore anything no matter what date I choose. Can anyone explain what suddenly happened to my Vista out of the blue? I run the latest Mcafee by the way.

Jan 8, 2009Dell xps 400, pentium2.80 ghz dual core, 1 gig ram, win xp media center op sys. Just bought a new microsoft cordless mouse with usb connection for transmitter. With mouse plugged in my monitor will not power down after the amount of minutes I have set in power options nor will it go to screen saver if I choose a screen saver which I did just to test. So, I turned off screen saver and just chose in the power option panel to turn off monitor after five minutes, chose to hibernate never or suspend never. Will not work with mouse plugged in, but will work if I unplug mouse.

Jun 25, 2005A couple of things are driving me insane.When I press F8 regardless of my choice the system will allow me to boot only in normal mode. I.E. If I choose "Safe mode with command prompt" and hit enter, the next screen shows first line "Please select the operating system to start" second line "Windows XP professional" highlighted, third line "Use the up and down key to... Press enter to choose" and at the bottom "For troubleshooting and advanced startup options press F8" and the last line, in highlighted blue "Safe mode with command prompt". I then press enter and after scrolling thru all the lines the system reboots to the F8 boot options.Only "boot in normal mode" gets me out of the loop.
