Apr 21, 2006all my top menu options for task manager are gone disappeared.i cant access the file, options, view, windows, help and the ones below that apps, processes & performance.

Here is the description:The PC loads windows, but instead of going to my desktop screen... I get to an open windows explorer window (open to my desktop list) - my start up menu and taskbar are GONE.Everything else works.... my programs, my files, my user config.everything, I went into control panel and clicked on taskbar... nada... nothing happens checked anti virus.. nada.I have another physical disk (d with windows and when I swithc it to be the boot up disk, I get windows like usual, but none of my user configuration.... and the programs from the original disk do not load.

"Switch To" Options Wont Work In Task Manager?
Apr 12, 2007I am using Windows XP professional, service pack 2, on all machines. If I check "minimize on use", select an application in the "Applications" tab, and click "Switch to", it does not switch to that application but opens another window instead. I have this problem on 3 of the 4 machines I normally use. Can anyone tell me of a configuration setting that changes this behavior? The only difference between the machine that works and the ones that don't is how they connect to the network. The machines with the problem are on my home network connected through a workgroup.

Jul 12, 2005I have a computer that I formatted the hard drive on. Then installed Windows XP Pro. When it boots up, it goes to a black screen and has Windows XP Pro and Windows XP listed with the Win XP Pro selected and boots to it in 15 seconds or so if nothing is selected. I have read somewhere about this before and have NO clue where I read it, but does anyone know how to get rid of the option (Win XP) that really doesn't even exist on the hard drive?

Task Manager / Device Manager Don't Run
Aug 30, 2005A friend of mine has a 4 yr. old PC running XP Home with 128Mb of memory. He's had problems with programs aborting recently. I tried to run Device Manager to make sure there were no issues there. It briefly brought the screen up, then it went away. The same thing happened to Task Manager when I tried to see what was running and how much memory was being used. Anybody ever see this behavior before? I might try installing a memory cleaner pgm (ie. Memturbo), but I'm not sure I would even be able to get it to run. The hard drive amd memory seem to have no errors.

Feb 27, 2006I recently downloaded some media files and straight after my computer slowed down to a crawl and then would not respond. The mouse pointer remains active but i cannot click on anything succesfully. The task bar and task manager do not respond at all, i can open files saved on my desktop but cannot do anything when they're open and cannot close them again. I reset my PC a number of times but this did not solve the problem. I assume this is a virus or spyware problem but could it possibly be anything else?

May 4, 2005This morning when I went to the computer, the screen was blank and the computer was running. There was no HD activity. The computer was not hibernating. Eventually I reset and the computer would not boot. I opened the case, removed the video card and was able to boot to XP Pro SP2. I had left the computer on overnight to render/burn a DVD with Sony Vegas.Once I got to the desktop, I found that networking was no longer functioning. None of my network connections appeared under "Network Connections". My onboard LAN (Realtek RTL8100) was no longer appearing in my device manager nor is my modem (not that I ever use it) or my firewire card. I don't know what else might be missing.I have a MSI MS-6533 Mainboard w/ Intel P4-1.6 GHz (Bought as barebones system).

Aug 23, 2007There are a few things that contributed to the leadup to me losing my Device Manager and sound. First, about 3 weeks ago, I bought 2 sticks of Mushkin EM3200 DDR RAM (two 1GB sticks; 2GB total). Installed it, and it disagreed with my board in a big way (apparently it was the voltages or timings). I managed to get as far as "Verifying DMI Pool Data..." before I got one of two error messages: "NTLDR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." or "Windows failed to load because the System32 folder is corrupt or missing." In each case, I popped in my Windows XP disc and fixed the boot record from the recovery console (I did not restore the MBR), and it booted right in.
At the time, Windows booted up just fine, but lately I've been having some funky problems. I've got one SATA drive (partitioned into two) which is my boot drive and one IDE drive that I just use for storage. Sometimes, with my IDE drive plugged in on boot, I can't get Windows to load by any means. Sometimes it boots just fine. When it boots fine, and I go into "My Computer" (either via the Start Menu or the icon on the desktop) it takes about 20-30 seconds to actually display anything (I get either the flashlight-over-folder animation or it just doesn't load). With my IDE drive unplugged, I get no such issues.
As well, the first couple of times I restored the boot record, I had no issues with sound at all. Then suddenly Windows started saying I had no sound device (my volume icon had disappeared, and the "Sounds and Audio Devices" menu in the Control Panel showed no output/playback device) although I clearly do have one. The weird thing is, I still got sound. Then I updated my sound card drivers (it's onboard sound; Realtek AC'97, pretty standard fare) and lost sound completely. All I get now is motherboard/PC speaker beeps. So I attempted to check the Device Manager to see if maybe there was just a device conflict. I say attempted because my Device Manager was completely blank. And I mean completely. All it showed was the title bar, menu buttons, and a white page. Nothing else. Zip.Just ran out to work and got an Audigy for $30 thinking it may just have been my onboard sound kicking the bucket. Installed it, booted up and tried to install the drivers. The driver installation program detected no Audigy in my machine (and I thought it wouldn't because Windows didn't pop up with the little "Found New Hardware Wizard" when I booted).
