When I tried to power on my personal computer this morning, I got a series of 6 or 7 beeps the first 2 times and my personal computer didn't turn on. The third try did turn it on. What does this mean? Is it indications of serious problems?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI didnt do anything, no new programs installed, but all of a sudden my pc beeps 5 or 6 times quickly every 5 or so minutes. i ran a virus check and a spybot check and a adaware check. nothing found.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a computer that is stuck in a loop and won't boot into normal or safe mode. There is a blue screen flashing up, but way too quick for me to be able to see the STOP code. The problem I have is that the American Megatrends BIOS 2.51, has an option on the boot screen "Press F8 for BBS Popup". Therefore I can't use the F8 key to get into the Windows XP Advanced Options menu. Why the hell has a BIOS manufacturer hijacked an important Windows key? I have also tried pressing the F8 key AFTER the BIOS screen, but even by doing that you still get a boot order list by pressing F8, and not the Advanced Options menu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOn page 222 of my Windows XP book "Plain & Simple" it explains that, if, before Windows starts, you hold down Key F8 the Windows Advanced Options Menu will appear - only IT DOESN'T !! It used to, on my old computer, but now I have a new one, 250 GB 'split' into two drives of 125GB each, with Windows XP SP2 OEM Software.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm working on recovering a machine from a month-long period of time during which it was completely overrun with spyware and virues. Currently, I have the following issues to contend with: System Restore can only be activated or deactivated via direct registry edit. When you try from the System Properties window, it simply tells you that an error occurred and to try a restart. The advanced start menu options are blank. There are no options to turn off or on things like "Show Network Connections." The options can be turned on in the registry, but the options are missing altogether from the 'rt-click-on-the-start-button' process. Any instance of IE that is open shows in the taskbar as "Windows Explorer," rather than Internet Explorer.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just put a computer together, and had a little trouble getting it started. When turned on, it starts to show the post check on the screen, then it stops and beeps once, followed by 9 more beeps. After a minute or so, it seems to warm up and start. Sometimes I have to hit the reset button. Once running, it is fine, but it is driving me crazy to figure out the beeps. I know that once upon a time, in DOS, different numbers of beeps meant something, but I can't remember or find a reference. It is irritating to have this sequence when starting the computer.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I restart the computer it POSTs fine (counts the memory, displays "the" table... etc). When It's about to start Windows it starts beeping. Continuous short beeps. The cursor just blinks on the screen and it beeps. When I press F8 to get to the boot menu, nothing happens. No boot menu appears.I did a repair install from my XP install CD - same thing happens, nothing has changed. I tried to restore MBR record through recovery console but again same thing, no change.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am geting a extremely slow "windows is starting up" usually about 3-6 min then when everything loads up I end up experiencing a lot of locking up and crawling when doing simple tasks like moving files. I only have like 4 programs in the area next to my clock running. I have recently taken my puter to a friend/tech and he cleaned up my puter of the viruses it had and the spy/adware it had, ran some hardware tests and memory tests and claimed everything was fine not the case.my puter shouldnt be experiencing these prob.anyone have a clue? Also I forgot to mention that I checked my sys startup and the main thing that seems to be running the most is the system idle process usually at 99 nothing else seems to be taking anything and there are about 30-35 processes running.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI recently bought an ASUS A8JP Notebook PC (WinXp MCE, 1Gig RAM, 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo) and I guess it ran well the first day, but as soon as I installed all the needed software (and cleared out some factory installed bloatware), I noticed that the time for my Desktop to load after logon takes up to 2 minutes. Here's what I've done to try fix this
1. Defragmented HD
2. Turned off unwanted startup items and about 1/3 of the services at startup.
3. Tweaked and cleaned up the registry.
4. Flashed my BIOS to the latest Revision.
i am having problems my startup it's very slow and freezes forceing me to restart computer multiple times just for it load up xp properly. Also generally my computer is very unresponsive cant understand why ive defraged ive deleted all temp files freeed up space on hd and regular run virus scans.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI seem to be having problems as of late with my computer. for the past 10-15 days when I startup my computer sometimes Windows will load and other times it won't. I don't even get the privledge of the blue screen of death, but rather then brown green screen saying Windows failed to start. Usually it takes 3-4 tries before Windows successfully loads, but it seems to be getting progressively worse. I haven't installed any new software or modifiied any configuration details within the last 30days. I even tried a system restore point of about a month ago and I continue to have this problem.
I threw in my XP cd for a re-install but it says my version of windows is newer then the one on the cd, and after thinking about it, if this is a serious problem, having to re-install windows, all of my drivers for my 3rd party hardware and then update everything might not be worth the effort if I can just get a new computer. I have been pondering for a while of purchasing a mac for my next round of computer purchases so if it comes down to that, hardware and software costs from my current system are not a major issue. So is my computer just slowly dying like a used car, or what might be the problem?
I was going to do a clean install of 2000 over 2000,it won't let me do the install.
I thought I'd clean it up, so that is working out great, the seller didn't leave too much on there...but everytime it restarts I have the option to run windows 2000 or run windows 2000 setup.how to make it start up normally?
After a reinstall i now get the option of "xp pro or xp pro" bit daft really anyone got a clue
also having two harddrives i choose this time to put windows on the smaller one 37gb
i cannot get windows to call it "c drive"
every time i boot up or restart my comp i get a screen saying this:
Please select the Operating System to start:
Microsoft Xp Home Edition
Restore Microsoft Home Edition
for troubleshooting and advanced startup options for windows, press F8.
Ive tried selecting both options and it boots up normally into Xp, but then when i boot up again or restart the comp the same screen appears every time
P4 2.8
512mb ram
100gb hard drive
Windows Xp Home sp2
How would I go about restoring windows when all five startup options go to bsod? I get different stop messages when I choose different options. I thought about an OS re-install but can't find my disk, all I can find is the disk for my fiancee's Laptop. Hers was XP pro and mine was Xp home so I didn't think it would work, and besides I can't find any product codes or serial numbers for either. Am I going to have to format and buy a new OS or what?

Whenever I attempt to boot windows XP from a tested and working HDD, I am given the screen with the option for safemode, regularboot, etc. After selecting a boot option, the PC will start the boot process, and then a few seconds reboot, without any error message. Insterestingly, I can boot just fine with the LiveCD into Linux.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI bought a computer with XP Pro loaded. Recently discovered that the XP Pro is not "legal" so I went and bought XP Home (all I needed anyway). Loaded XP
Home but now when the computer starts up I get the choice to either run XP Home in safe mode or XP Pro as before. Bascially I want to run with XP Home and discard XP Pro so that I am legal and can register for updates etc. Err, what should I do?
ok my neighbors Dell was having problems loading windows so i took alook at it it would still lock up in safe mode before the windows login screen so i tried to use the windows disk to repair windows but they forgot the passord that they used and it wouldnt let me repair with out a admin password so i decided to format so i used the windows xp home edition disk to format all the partions and reinstalled windows now its seeing 2 copys of windows when u boot up and giving the option to pick wich windows xp home edition i want to boot with.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI messed up some of my .dll files so I needed to re-install Windows XP. While the installation process was on I was prompted for an Administrator ID and Password. I never had an Admin id before, there I created one. After the reinstallation I restarted my system and I was shown an OS choice menu where there were two entries named 'Microsoft Windows XP'. The first choice opened up the newly created guest account and when I logged in it had none of my previous data, it was just like a frest account. The second choice was my normal account that I was using before re-installtion. Now I was annoyed with the admin account and reinstalled Windows for the second time. After re-installing I saw there were a total of three OS menu choices, the first two were admin and the last one is my own account. So everytime I start my PC I have to manually select the third OS option. Its really annoying. How do I get rid of the first two OS choices?

View 2 Replies View RelatedOk, I finally decided I need to fdisk, format and reinstall windows xp. Repairing and re-installing are not options. Too many errors result. Here's the problem. I have several startup disks... from 95 through xp (which is actually ME in isquise). NONE of the fdisk commands seem to work. XP is so screwed up, I'm lucky to get back here, let alone find my original post. All I want to do is fdisk my C drive. My D drive is 120gig, and formatted just fine. I don't want to use it as my master though. I just want to put all my other stuff on it.

I am assuming it has something to do with the Video, but wanted to check here first.
