Oct 1, 2006I recently WIPED 160GB HDD in the laptop, then Fresh Reinstalled Windows XP Media Center Edition. I even deleted Dell's "partion" on the drive. When I bootup, I get TWO (2) options to boot into, but BOTH say: "Windows XP Media Center Edition" and "Windows XP Media Center Edition" However only the TOP one will allow me to bootup.
When I click on the Bottom option, I get the following: Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. I do however want to create a DUAL, or even TRIPLE Boot so I can install a Linux distro, Windows Vista RC1 Beta, and Media Center XP....

Jul 21, 2009I really didnt want to harm my computer or have all my files deleted so after spending hours googling it, I thought I'd make my own thread and ask here.My cousin basically gave me my laptop, 40gb hard drive and dual booting windows xp and windows vista.I've never ever used xp and always use vista, but recently I noticed that I'm running out of diskspace. After a lot of research I realised it was my windows folder that was taking up 50% of my drive!

Jun 26, 2010I have inherited an old compaq s6220wm without HDD from a friend. Whenever I attempt to boot windows XP from a tested and working HDD, I am given the screen with the option for safemode, regularboot, etc. After selecting a boot option, the PC will start the boot process, and then a few seconds reboot, without any error message. Insterestingly, I can boot just fine with the LiveCD into Linux.

My problem is that the software that I am running needs to run from the Windows 98 start menu option number - 5. command prompt. At present when I want to run the software I need to firstly choose the Windows 98 option from the menu and then try to hit F8 really quickly so that I can run the command prompt. Is there any option that I can write in the boot.ini that will force the Windows 98 Boot Partition to show me the startup menu instead of having to hit F8 really quickly.

Apr 3, 2007I have successfully cloned my primary c partition of a dual boot system with XP Pro on the 1st primary partition c: and XP Pro on the 2nd primary partition as d: I can boot into my XP on the c: drive with no problem, but when I attempt to boot into my XP on the D drive it hangs on the blue screen right before booting into the user profiles. And believe it or not it continuously loops making the windows startup sound and the shutdown sound. It does the same in safe mode.

Boot Menu Options: Black Screen With Options?
Jul 12, 2005I have a computer that I formatted the hard drive on. Then installed Windows XP Pro. When it boots up, it goes to a black screen and has Windows XP Pro and Windows XP listed with the Win XP Pro selected and boots to it in 15 seconds or so if nothing is selected. I have read somewhere about this before and have NO clue where I read it, but does anyone know how to get rid of the option (Win XP) that really doesn't even exist on the hard drive?

Jun 28, 2010I have been trying to install Windows XP as a second OS as I already have Windows 7 Ultimate installed. Unfortunately, after I select a partition, format it, and reboot the system stalls on the screen after the BIOS that has something to do with a list of devices and such. After 10 or so seconds a few characters and letters go blank randomly on the page. I rebooted and selected my cd drive as the boot device and accidentally didn't press a button in time to boot and a bunch of highlighted numbers were thrown all over the screen and a random smiley face on one of the lines.

Jan 12, 2009I'm trying to dual boot 2 different installs of xp pro from 2 drives using the Windows boot loader. I've edited the boot.ini every possible way I can think of, but nothing works. I've done this plenty of times using a linux boot loader or dual booting from a single drive but I cant figure this out. I haven't been able to find any reference to this subject anywhere, but I think it would work. Anybody have a clue as to how to do this? I know I can use a different boot manager to accomplish this, I just wanted to make the Win boot.ini work. Or, does anybody know of a good boot manager if I cant make this work?

Feb 27, 2008How would I go about restoring windows when all five startup options go to bsod? I get different stop messages when I choose different options. I thought about an OS re-install but can't find my disk, all I can find is the disk for my fiancee's Laptop. Hers was XP pro and mine was Xp home so I didn't think it would work, and besides I can't find any product codes or serial numbers for either. Am I going to have to format and buy a new OS or what?

Mar 7, 2006I messed up some of my .dll files so I needed to re-install Windows XP. While the installation process was on I was prompted for an Administrator ID and Password. I never had an Admin id before, there I created one. After the reinstallation I restarted my system and I was shown an OS choice menu where there were two entries named 'Microsoft Windows XP'. The first choice opened up the newly created guest account and when I logged in it had none of my previous data, it was just like a frest account. The second choice was my normal account that I was using before re-installtion. Now I was annoyed with the admin account and reinstalled Windows for the second time. After re-installing I saw there were a total of three OS menu choices, the first two were admin and the last one is my own account. So everytime I start my PC I have to manually select the third OS option. Its really annoying. How do I get rid of the first two OS choices?

Oct 24, 2009I accidentally deleted a partition and later found out that my system is dead....The only way I recover out of that is I reinstall Windows and then install grub again to recover the Linux partition. But I feel the delete partition is a very rapid process just taking seconds and in that I don't think files would be deleted, so I feel potentially I can recover the deleted partitions including the boot partition. But I don't know how to do it. Also now when the boot partition is deleted and the system is not booting up what should be done to recover the system and data?
