I recently brought a laptop with XP Home preloaded, but as I had a retail CD of XP
pro I thought I'd boot from that CD and run setup which includes a full reformat.
I now have XP pro up and running, but I get an annoying "dual boot" screen giving
a choice of XP pro and XP home! How can I get rid of this dual boot screen as XP
Home no longer exists?
Installed Win XP in a hard disk and installed vista in another But I didn't like Windows Vista and just formatted the Hard Disk But now when I turn the PC on, the Dual Boot screen continues to appear How I make it disappear and make my PC only start with Windows XP?

Unfortunately, after I select a partition, format it, and reboot the system stalls on the screen after the BIOS that has something to do with a list of devices and such. After 10 or so seconds a few characters and letters go blank randomly on the page. I rebooted and selected my cd drive as the boot device and accidentally didn't press a button in time to boot and a bunch of highlighted numbers were thrown all over the screen and a random smiley face on one of the lines.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have my Windows 2K and Windows 98 PC running fine. It brings up a startup option and I select the option that I want. My problem is that the software that I am running needs to run from the Windows 98 start menu option number - 5. command prompt. At present when I want to run the software I need to firstly choose the Windows 98 option from the menu and then try to hit F8 really quickly so that I can run the command prompt. Is there any option that I can write in the boot.ini that will force the Windows 98 Boot Partition to show me the startup menu instead of having to hit F8 really quickly.

This HDD had 2 partition on it (from a previous XP install on another PC) so I used the XP install CD to basically remove it and create a single partition on it (that's the only way I knew how to do it).However, while doing that, it ended up creating a dual boot config so that now, when I start my PC, I have to chose which OS to start:1) The regular XP install2) The one that never got installed on the new HDD since I only partitionned it.?
A friend wanted to remove the FAT32 Win98 partition and leave his XP NTFS partition as the boot partition. He has used PM7 to delete the FAT32 partitin and move the NTFS t the front of the disk. However, it now does not boot. FIXMBR and FIXBOOT (from the Recovery console) looked as if they were fixing things but it still does not boot ("Invalid System Disk...").
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have successfully cloned my primary c partition of a dual boot system with XP Pro on the 1st primary partition c: and XP Pro on the 2nd primary partition as d: I can boot into my XP on the c: drive with no problem, but when I attempt to boot into my XP on the D drive it hangs on the blue screen right before booting into the user profiles. And believe it or not it continuously loops making the windows startup sound and the shutdown sound. It does the same in safe mode.

I was one of the many millions of Vista Beta testers out there, dual-booting on my wife's machine with XP Pro and Vista.
After awhile, I really got tired of Vista and I think it's a POS, so I stopped running it. When I installed the OS, I had it on its own partition on the HDD. Xp, naturally, was on a partition of its own as well.
What I did was to delete the Vista partition. But when I boot the system, I still see the "Boot into Vista or XP" screen
After many times removing viruses from my computer, I am dual booting both windows xp and windows 7. I primarily right now use windows xp, I lost the ability to get into windows xp, when at the dual boot screen I click on windows xp but I just get a black screen with no cursor, I cannot get into safe mode either. My google chrome stopped working and could not connetc to any websites. Windows 7 was working perfectly. I have scanned from within windows xp and from windows 7 to find as many viruses and trojans as possible. a trojan remover told me my ftdisk.sys was infected with win32/patched.dx. I moved it into the virus vault knowing it was an important system file as I did not think I had a choice. I then extracted the original ftdisk.sys from the xp cd and replaced it, I know that service packs can modify original files and I hoped the original file was the same as the infected one. That did not have an effect. I used recovery console to run fixmbr and no effect. I then ran fixboot.exe and chkdsk /r and next thing I know I do not get a boot screen at all.
Please help me as I cannot get into either windows now. Would fixboot.exe or chkdsk remove my boot screen?
Many problems with viruses and then windows xp and windows 7 both went down, just a black screen after posting, no cursor, not even safe mode available. I repaired windows xp using the xp recovery console. Reinstalled while keeping all my files and folders intact. Now my only problem is that the dual boot menu for windows xp and windows 7 has disappeard. I can only choose to log into windows xp.
Could you help me identify an easy way to bring back the option to log into windows 7. From windows xp I can clearly see my other hard drive, which has windows 7 on it, and access it so it has not been lost or formatted which would be strange if it was.
Well i built my pc along with my friend at the end of April. I have had it for several months now. After i first built it, it ran just fine for about a month then BSOD started to occur. I researched on the internet and i found a post that said to post my minidump so that they can see it. When i searched for the minidump it wasnt there, my final solution was to reformat. I reformatted and the problem went a away.

Since then I reinstalled XP. Now, I am not getting the boot loader screen at startup so I can choose which OS. Is it something to do with modifying the master boot record? Or do I need a recovery disc or something?

You can attempt to repair this file by putting the winxp cd in etc...
Now when i turn on my computer there is just a black screen showing, with nothing at all on it.
Any ideas?
i have a dual boot system xp / vista64 all of a sudden my computer takes a long time to boot it stays on the splash screen for about 10 minutes before showing me the boot selection screen what could be the problem?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to dual boot 2 different installs of xp pro from 2 drives using the Windows boot loader. I've edited the boot.ini every possible way I can think of, but nothing works. I've done this plenty of times using a linux boot loader or dual booting from a single drive but I cant figure this out. I haven't been able to find any reference to this subject anywhere, but I think it would work. Anybody have a clue as to how to do this? I know I can use a different boot manager to accomplish this, I just wanted to make the Win boot.ini work. Or, does anybody know of a good boot manager if I cant make this work?

Vista no longer holds terrors for me and I'd like to get rid of XP and regain better use of the 250Gb HD. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an IBM T41P Thinkpad, actually a company notebook with Windows XP Pro,Recently, after installing SP2 myself, but not right away, I started getting the following problem.When I come from the office to home and boot up my PC it goes through the XP startup and user login fine, then plays the login sound and the blue screen, (blank desktop defined) then it just sits for anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes before the start menu and the rest of the desktop appear, no errors or other clues, the hard drive spins occaisionally but not much.The first entry in the system event log is the event log starting and then the only errors are related to the DHCP and Domain controller not found, but these occur a few seconds apart in the system event log, so this problem is happening before the event log is started, I think.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had been away from my computer for about an hour and when i returned the screen was black and nothing would change it so hit the restart button. When the computer started up, I first saw the usual blue dell logo-screen, however, the next screen was the windows 98 startup logo-screen. The computer then entered DOS mode and at the top of the screen it says Microsoft Windows 98. This problem persists every time i start the computer. I only have 1 primary partion and i installed XP on it from a clean install by using a win98 bootdisk to format and running winnt from the i386 folder of the xp cd. When i try to enter SAFE MODE the computer goes to the Win 98 start-up logo screen again and enters DOS again. I know that all my files are still on the HDD because i can navigate through them. All i really want to do is somehow save some files that are on te HDD so i can just format and reinstall XP.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI accidentally deleted a partition and later found out that my system is dead....The only way I recover out of that is I reinstall Windows and then install grub again to recover the Linux partition. But I feel the delete partition is a very rapid process just taking seconds and in that I don't think files would be deleted, so I feel potentially I can recover the deleted partitions including the boot partition. But I don't know how to do it. Also now when the boot partition is deleted and the system is not booting up what should be done to recover the system and data?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) booting Suse and XP and boot up through Suse's built in boot manager which gives me the option of booting to Windows or Linux. But since I barely ever use Linux I want to delete it off the 2nd drive so I can use it for a storage drive, so I'm wondering how to replace the Windows Master Boot Record so I can just boot into my XP drive. I'm scared that once I delete/reformat the contents of the 2nd hard drive (I'll probably use Partition Magic to do this through my XP drive) that I won't be able to boot XP up anymore. So before I do anything I want to just be able to boot into XP and bypass the linux drive before I delete it to make sure everything is ok.
