I have just got a new PC which came preloaded with XP Home. As I wanted to use XP Pro I nuked what was on there, or so I thought, and installed Pro from scratch. Now when I boot up (as distinct from booting it which I would like to do regularly,) when it starts it gives me a screen asking if I want to boot from XP Pro or XP Home etc. Is there anyway I can get rid of that first screen please?

If I am not quick then it automatically selects Windows XP setup where it goes into the intial setup screens where I need to quit and re-boot the PC. There is nothing wrong with my pc and I have no need to carry out any setup tasks, what I want to do is to get rid of this option.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy main pc is stuck in a boot cycle giving me the black screen with options to start in safe mode etc etc and when selecting one of those options it reboots to the same point. When I press return the system tries to start it attempts it, clicks then goes back to boot cycle. The Windows XP system disk won't cut in like it should so I cannot gain control of the pc.
System is a Dell, 2years old and has had various viruses despite having the usual protection. I am currently using my old trusty Advent Pentium 3 for this message (which has never had the same degree of virus prob's curiously). After the first virus Dell talked me through using Ghost - brilliant. Within a couple of days it was hit again and usinng Spybot got rid of the virus but PC kept displaying the message rundll.dll file damaged. So I used XP Recovery seemingly with no problem only to find it won't reboot.
I have ended up with 4 different options for XP Pro when my computer starts. This is, basically, as a result of me re-installing Widows a couple of times to try and solve a very slow running system (more help needed there but I will start a new thread for that).How do I remove the 3 unwanted start options?

When it boots up, it goes to a black screen and has Windows XP Pro and Windows XP listed with the Win XP Pro selected and boots to it in 15 seconds or so if nothing is selected. I have read somewhere about this before and have NO clue where I read it, but does anyone know how to get rid of the option (Win XP) that really doesn't even exist on the hard drive?

Home but now when the computer starts up I get the choice to either run XP Home in safe mode or XP Pro as before. Bascially I want to run with XP Home and discard XP Pro so that I am legal and can register for updates etc. Err, what should I do?
I currently have XP Home, 5.1 build 2600 according to dxdiag. I also have an XP Profesional CD, however the compatibility test on that CD says "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD". So it seems I can't upgrade with the disc I have.I want XP Pro because I have 8GB of RAM, and I don't like Vista. Also I want to upgrade rather than fresh install so I can keep all the programs etc. I currently have. What are my options on upgrading to a 64 bit version of XP Pro? What do I need to buy?

It went to the "xp was not shutdown properly,boot to safe mode, or last known working settings screen, ETC". None of the options work, i have tried all of them, safe mode and last known working settings included. When i select one of the options, the hardrive spins up, and then my gfx card bios info and mobo splash screen come on. Well, i think it might be because i ran a 'virus remover' for the game gmod, this was the first time the computer had been booted since i ran it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe New one is Drive 0 and OS is on partition 2 (Dell installation disk put in a FAT32 diag partition)Apart from my boot drive being F:.. I can live with it. However I got two options on booting up.. first one is Unidentified Operating System on C drive and underneath XP Windows HOME edition. after some experimentation.. I reversed the order and cut the timer down to 10 secs delay.
Problem is that sometimes I do not get the OS options dispalyed at all.. If that happens, I then get a black screen and a flashing white dash. On pressing the power button it soft re-boots and I get the options dispalyed with the default XP Home at the top and timer counting down to load it .. it then runs fine.. till the next crossed fingers start-up.
Can anyone please tell me how to disable the Windows start-up options at the start of windows XP?

While using the computer, for example using IE on the internet: all of my desktop icons and access to anything ie. start menu and right click on desktop no longer works. There Windows XP (which I usually click), a Skeleton Boot (some boot screen program I was screwing with), another Windows XP (haven't used it, maybe a previous installation?), and some other windows option that my computer first came with.
Anyways, I know that I only use the first one so is there a way to eliminate the other 3 from the menu? Ideally I would like to not even see the menu when I boot the computer, I'd like it to just go through to windows. I thought I remembered seeing a control panel or some settings for that area somewhere but I can't remember where.
I just install my xp To my System as a primary system os. and id like to install win 98 as a backup os. and is there any possiblity that i can boot my system to xp without going to that os choice menu? and from inside xp (after booting xp) transfer from win98 without rebooting again?

This is really annoying because I always have to click the expanding buttons at the bottom of the start menu - see bellow. When I right click and get the Properties, and try to Customize the Menu, the options don't save, and I'm stuck with nothing. I've tried clicking on the Internet radio button for "Show on Start Menu". I click Ok, then Apply, and Finally Ok again. But when I go back to the menu, it still has nothing in the left-hand column.
The second thing I've noticed was under Folder Options -> View, I tried to check both the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" button, and also un-check "Hide extensions for Known File Types" and click on Apply, then Ok again. But still, these options don't save and are reset back to "Do not show hidden files", and "hide extensions".
I'm working on recovering a machine from a month-long period of time during which it was completely overrun with spyware and virues. Currently, I have the following issues to contend with: System Restore can only be activated or deactivated via direct registry edit. When you try from the System Properties window, it simply tells you that an error occurred and to try a restart. The advanced start menu options are blank. There are no options to turn off or on things like "Show Network Connections." The options can be turned on in the registry, but the options are missing altogether from the 'rt-click-on-the-start-button' process. Any instance of IE that is open shows in the taskbar as "Windows Explorer," rather than Internet Explorer.
