I have ended up with 4 different options for XP Pro when my computer starts. This is, basically, as a result of me re-installing Widows a couple of times to try and solve a very slow running system (more help needed there but I will start a new thread for that).How do I remove the 3 unwanted start options?
View 5 RepliesI have a computer that I formatted the hard drive on. Then installed Windows XP Pro. When it boots up, it goes to a black screen and has Windows XP Pro and Windows XP listed with the Win XP Pro selected and boots to it in 15 seconds or so if nothing is selected. I have read somewhere about this before and have NO clue where I read it, but does anyone know how to get rid of the option (Win XP) that really doesn't even exist on the hard drive?

Most of it is google stuff that got loaded when my husband loaded a new program. I have gone through search and it brought it all up...but when i go to delete it, it gives me an alert and says that it can't be deleted to check the disc. There is no other CDs present. I can only assume that Windows saw that CD in the drive & saw it as another OS. how do I remove the option for the non-existent XP? & how to I lower the time from 30 secs to 5 secs or eliminate this selection screen?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just got a new PC which came preloaded with XP Home. As I wanted to use XP Pro I nuked what was on there, or so I thought, and installed Pro from scratch. Now when I boot up (as distinct from booting it which I would like to do regularly,) when it starts it gives me a screen asking if I want to boot from XP Pro or XP Home etc. Is there anyway I can get rid of that first screen please?
View 13 Replies View RelatedThe New one is Drive 0 and OS is on partition 2 (Dell installation disk put in a FAT32 diag partition)Apart from my boot drive being F:.. I can live with it. However I got two options on booting up.. first one is Unidentified Operating System on C drive and underneath XP Windows HOME edition. after some experimentation.. I reversed the order and cut the timer down to 10 secs delay.
Problem is that sometimes I do not get the OS options dispalyed at all.. If that happens, I then get a black screen and a flashing white dash. On pressing the power button it soft re-boots and I get the options dispalyed with the default XP Home at the top and timer counting down to load it .. it then runs fine.. till the next crossed fingers start-up.
Can anyone please tell me how to disable the Windows start-up options at the start of windows XP?

If I am not quick then it automatically selects Windows XP setup where it goes into the intial setup screens where I need to quit and re-boot the PC. However for the specific D:/MP3 Folder I would like to Have Details and my own columns. While using the computer, for example using IE on the internet: all of my desktop icons and access to anything ie. start menu and right click on desktop no longer works. I can continue using the IE open window, but to get my other programs back I have to shut down. The desktop wallpaper still remains.

i messed around with it for a while changing zoom, stretch, dot to dot ect .Finnaly i got the tv's view mode to normal no stretch and filled all 32" perfectly with my desktop and the resolution was something like 2040x1200 or 1920x1080 not sure exactly..i should have wrote that down but close to that..

Regardless of whatever choice I make I always get a white background.Avast Anti-viruss scan found no viruses and 'Malwarebytes' found no malware. This is really annoying because I always have to click the expanding buttons at the bottom of the start menu - see bellow. Is there anyway to have the start menu contsantly expanded by default so I don't have to keep manually expanding it?

When I right click and get the Properties, and try to Customize the Menu, the options don't save, and I'm stuck with nothing. I've tried clicking on the Internet radio button for "Show on Start Menu". I click Ok, then Apply, and Finally Ok again. But when I go back to the menu, it still has nothing in the left-hand column.
The second thing I've noticed was under Folder Options -> View, I tried to check both the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" button, and also un-check "Hide extensions for Known File Types" and click on Apply, then Ok again. But still, these options don't save and are reset back to "Do not show hidden files", and "hide extensions".
I'm working on recovering a machine from a month-long period of time during which it was completely overrun with spyware and virues. Currently, I have the following issues to contend with: System Restore can only be activated or deactivated via direct registry edit. When you try from the System Properties window, it simply tells you that an error occurred and to try a restart. The advanced start menu options are blank. There are no options to turn off or on things like "Show Network Connections." The options can be turned on in the registry, but the options are missing altogether from the 'rt-click-on-the-start-button' process. Any instance of IE that is open shows in the taskbar as "Windows Explorer," rather than Internet Explorer.
