When I start my pc I get an option to either start Windows XP or to run Windows XP Setup. If I am not quick then it automatically selects Windows XP setup where it goes into the intial setup screens where I need to quit and re-boot the PC. There is nothing wrong with my pc and I have no need to carry out any setup tasks, what I want to do is to get rid of this option.

To do it without using the cd it has to copy the installation files to the computer and then run them. When setup does this it creates a new choice of an operating system to boot from called "Windows XP Setup." So now I have a Windows XP and a Windows XP setup. I've been in msconfig and looked at boot.ini but that didn't help
View 8 Replies View RelatedDuring System startup, the system always halts at "Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility". The only way I can manage to boot to Windows is by selecting "Boot to utility partition" from the Boot Device Menu or if there is a Windows XP installation CD in the cd-rom drive. When I boot this way, everything works fine .This behavior started when I performed a fresh install of XP Professional (XP Home came with the system). The problem did not start immediately after the installation; I was able to install some drivers and reboot a couple times (maybe twice) before it happened. When I installed the display driver (from Dell) and rebooted, it went to the "Strike F1. " screen. I have since tried another fresh installation of XP Home (the original OS) and the problem is still occuring. This time it occurs immediately after the installation; No drivers have been installed at this point.

Now when I boot up (as distinct from booting it which I would like to do regularly,) when it starts it gives me a screen asking if I want to boot from XP Pro or XP Home etc. Is there anyway I can get rid of that first screen please?

View 2 Replies View Relatedi recently wanted to installed a few windows components from the windows xp installation cd. during the install i cancelled it. but the next day when i booted up the pc i got two options in the boot menu. It asked wether i wanted to boot "windows xp home edition" or "windows xp setup" How do i get rid of this "windows xp setup" boot option?
My main pc is stuck in a boot cycle giving me the black screen with options to start in safe mode etc etc and when selecting one of those options it reboots to the same point. When I press return the system tries to start it attempts it, clicks then goes back to boot cycle. The Windows XP system disk won't cut in like it should so I cannot gain control of the pc.
System is a Dell, 2years old and has had various viruses despite having the usual protection. I am currently using my old trusty Advent Pentium 3 for this message (which has never had the same degree of virus prob's curiously). After the first virus Dell talked me through using Ghost - brilliant. Within a couple of days it was hit again and usinng Spybot got rid of the virus but PC kept displaying the message rundll.dll file damaged. So I used XP Recovery seemingly with no problem only to find it won't reboot.
I have ended up with 4 different options for XP Pro when my computer starts. This is, basically, as a result of me re-installing Widows a couple of times to try and solve a very slow running system (more help needed there but I will start a new thread for that).How do I remove the 3 unwanted start options?

When it boots up, it goes to a black screen and has Windows XP Pro and Windows XP listed with the Win XP Pro selected and boots to it in 15 seconds or so if nothing is selected. I have read somewhere about this before and have NO clue where I read it, but does anyone know how to get rid of the option (Win XP) that really doesn't even exist on the hard drive?

He boots up his computer, to go to the screen where it gives him 5 choices to start his computer: start windows normally, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, last good known configuration, etc. No matter which one he chooses though, they all give him the same result. He sees the windows logo with the bars loading up XP but shortly after that he gets a Blue Screen of Death for about a second (not long enough for me to see the error), then it goes back to the Boot options I listed above. Not exactly sure where to go when I am trying to help him at the moment. Usually, I can get the BSOD error and go from there, but this time I'm stuck because I can't see the error in time. At the moment, I have limited computer specs. from him (pretty sure its a dell) but other than that, not much else.

Hardware is 2.0 Celeron, 1 gig Ram, 64MB Nvidia Video Card, PS/2 keyboard and mouse, HD's are 250GIG Western Digital with 4 partitions and 27% free on the XP Boot and 200GIG Western Digital with 2 Partitions. I have a Lite-On DVD +-R/RW drive and a 3.5 floppy. I am setup with a Duel-Boot configuration Win 98/XP. I do not have a paging file.
My problem occures after I hit enter for the Select Operating System page. I Hit enter, Win XP proceeds to load. After I hit enter and Windows loads the blue welcome screen 1 minute has passed. I hear the Welcome Audio music, however blue welcome screen is still there for 30 more seconds. Next is my picture that I have as my background that is shown without icons for 1minute 21seconds. Windows now displays my icons on my desktop. the icons blink at minute 4. after 4 minutes and 51 seconds I am able to use my computer. At bootup I only have 43 programs running and 357MB of the 1 gig ram taken.
What I have done:
1) I have started in safe mode and defraged my PC, 0% frag on all partitions except a drive that isn't currently plugged in and it was 1% because it's my backup drive (not worried about that 1%)
2)Removing all connected Componets and rebooted, same problem.
3) I have tried using msconfig.exe and setting the startup selection as Normal- it's defaulted to Selective. Tried reducing my startup programs. ....
When i booted up my pc to put some coursework on a usb stick, it failed to boot to xp. It went to the "xp was not shutdown properly,boot to safe mode, or last known working settings screen, ETC". None of the options work, i have tried all of them, safe mode and last known working settings included. When i select one of the options, the hardrive spins up, and then my gfx card bios info and mobo splash screen come on. Well, i think it might be because i ran a 'virus remover' for the game gmod, this was the first time the computer had been booted since i ran it.

I had a need for the Win98SE side of things then, but now that has gone but the Win98SE partition is the boot of course.I want to be able to do away with the Win98SE partition completely and ideally add the space to the Win2K one, maybe leave it as a clean NTFS partition if that makes things easier. This would mean that I would end up with a drive with a single boot partition holding Win2K. This of course is not a trivial process as the drive letter of the boot partition will need to change. (I do want that drive letter change incidentally).

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe New one is Drive 0 and OS is on partition 2 (Dell installation disk put in a FAT32 diag partition)Apart from my boot drive being F:.. I can live with it. However I got two options on booting up.. first one is Unidentified Operating System on C drive and underneath XP Windows HOME edition. after some experimentation.. I reversed the order and cut the timer down to 10 secs delay.
Problem is that sometimes I do not get the OS options dispalyed at all.. If that happens, I then get a black screen and a flashing white dash. On pressing the power button it soft re-boots and I get the options dispalyed with the default XP Home at the top and timer counting down to load it .. it then runs fine.. till the next crossed fingers start-up.
Can anyone please tell me how to disable the Windows start-up options at the start of windows XP?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been noticing that whenever I reboot my computer, or even at random intervals, that the wave portion of the volume menu goes to zero and it makes the sound on my computer go very quiet. I can move the wave dial back to the max and everything works alright, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on why this would be happening. I am running the onboard sound which is nvidia based, but not sure if there are any more current drivers than what I am running.

I used to have Nero and other programs like Jukebox, which I have uninstalled, but they still appear on this list as options, although they have no icon and do not work. How can I modify this list to remove the defunct programs? How can I have it not appear at all or run a defualt program automatically?
