I do not want to open another instance of a program that is already open.When I click on a file in explorer (and the program for that file is already open) the file is opened in another copy of the program.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure my question belongs in this venue and trust someone will kindly direct it elsewhere if applicable.When I convert a document to a PDF file, Windows XP Pro automatically tries to open the new PDF file with Miscrosoft Office Picture Manager. Further, when opening a PDF file from Windows Exploder (pun intended) I have to go the extra step of telling Windows to "open with" Acrobat 6.0 or it will automatically try to open with Picture Manager.

Here are the following keys which causes me problems: E = Opens up My Computer R= RUN U= Utilility Manager D= Desktop F= Search Results L= Login Window M= Desktop I cannot type in Google, Firefox address bar. When i went to folder options to try and change the icon for drives it somehow reset the setting for opening drives to find. I changed it to open with windows explorer for now so that i can open things but this doesnt help as they all open in new windows. Does anyone know how to reset this action to default? I checked on my other comp and there doesnt appear to normally be a default option it just opens.

Although this may not seem a big problem it is extremely annoying to have to use a US keyboard setting with a UK keyboard.My other problem is that when I try to install the Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB917283) the update process runs for a while and it eventually says that the installation has failed. All other updates are being installed successfully but this one continues to fail no matter how many times I try to install it and restart the computer etc.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set a default view for Windows Explorer but everytime I make my changes Windows doesn't seem to save the settings. I would like Windows Explorer to open with the Explorer Bar on the left with Folder view as the default. I've tried saving the view under options but this doesn't seem to work. If I close Windows Explorer it just goes back to the default view before I made my changes. Also is there a way to have Windows Explorer default to a certain directory?

I was having this problem on my old install of XP, which desperately needed a new install. In any case, I'm now using a freshly installed version of XP, and everything has been running perfectly for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, this one problem reappears: The File Open / Save As dialog box (aka Windows Common Control / comctl32.dll) takes forever to open (20 seconds to 60 seconds). I just did a chkdsk and defrag, and that did not solve the problem. Also, there are no network drives connected which could be slowing things down. This happens in both MS programs (such as Notepad) and 3rd party programs (such as Firefox).

after the timed countdown it starts to boot and get to the windows welcome screen and then hangs. no further progression from that point.

When I start my pc I get an option to either start Windows XP or to run Windows XP Setup. If I am not quick then it automatically selects Windows XP setup where it goes into the intial setup screens where I need to quit and re-boot the PC. There is nothing wrong with my pc and I have no need to carry out any setup tasks, what I want to do is to get rid of this option.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with XP in that if I right click on a file the drop-down options appear and if I move down to select an option mostly I get a warning that Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. I click Debug but then get a Warning that DrWatson debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close as well. On the right click drop-down there is an option "Open with Videozilla". I have a hunch that this may have something to do with the problem because it is mostly when this is highlighted in navigating down the options that the problem occurs.
I searched all files for "zilla" and only remnants of Mozilla were found, which I removed. No Videozilla files were found. When the mouse hits Videozilla the folder closes, all icons on desktop disappear for a few seconds as if the PC was resetting. It does not crash but is infuriating. Anybody else ever experience something similar? I could be barking up the wrong tree blaming Videozilla.
I recently somehow misconfigured different actions for the [File Folders] file type under [File Types] in [Folder Options]. Now whenever I go to open a folder, it opens a new window for that folder, even though [Folder Options] is set to browse in one window. And I have tried EVERYTHING, and know the only possible solution is to set the paramaters for [File Types].

View 6 Replies View RelatedI had to put windows 2000 on my moms PC, which is part of a network, and now EVERY computer on the Network sees an "Internet Gateway". WHY???? The only computer that can see shared files is my moms with the windows 2000. theres 3 more computers all running windows xp. how do i fix this? File sharing is now available, but I myself believe the internet is being slowed down. THe Internet gateway that windows XP is picking up is reading 8.0 mbps. My connection has gotten as high as like almost 2, but it should not read that.

I don't know when this broke, I know I used to be able to open chm files with no trouble but I can't pinpoint the last time it worked.I've searched around and found some references to this, but no solution -the only relevant MSKB is for Win98. I tried regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx, deleting the hh.dat files, clearing IE's file cache; nothing has helped. I haven't made any significant recent changed to the system that I can think of.

This is only SOME exe's. Particularly, older programs. Word, excel, WordPerfect all work. Older apps don't.
I've tried the exe fixes on dougknox.com site and kelly's corner XP fix.
I have a computer that I formatted the hard drive on. Then installed Windows XP Pro. When it boots up, it goes to a black screen and has Windows XP Pro and Windows XP listed with the Win XP Pro selected and boots to it in 15 seconds or so if nothing is selected. I have read somewhere about this before and have NO clue where I read it, but does anyone know how to get rid of the option (Win XP) that really doesn't even exist on the hard drive?
