Unable To Save Data To Removable Disk?
Feb 27, 2007When I try to save something to disk it comes up with 'The parameter is incorrect', then when I close that one another pops up saying 'You do not have access to folder 'D:' see your administrator for access to this folder'Firstly D: is the removable disk drive and not a folder, secondly as I am the only one who has an 'account/user' then thought I was the administrator!

Nov 24, 2009I have an odd issue with diskmgmt.msc or the disk managment feature of computer management (both the same thing). Anyway, it displays my fixed hard drive in my laptop just fine, however my SD/MMC cards, CD/DVD drives, external drives, etc.....do not show up. They are recognized however, and I can access my drive G: (the SD card) just fine through explorer and my computer. Is there any reason why they're not showing up in my disk management console? and is there a way to fix this?

Example: System 1 is a P4 built in a Shuttle SFF case with the provided MB; 1 SATA hard disk with three partitions, 1 DVD-ROM on PATA, 1 floppy on floppy channel, 1 multi-format flash reader on USB; the system sees two of the flash slots as removable storage. System 2 is an Athlon 64 built on an Epox Nvidia+ MB. 1 SATA hard disk (with two partitions), 1 SATA DVD-ROM (using a bridge adapter), 4 hard disks on PATA, 1 floppy on floppy channel, 1 multi-format flash reader on USB; the system sees _both_ SATA drives as being removable along with two of the flash slots. Either system properly sees an external hard disk on USB or Firewire as being removable.

And this morning this came up:My hard Disk Icon(The One in My Computer when you open it, showing your computer contents, your hard drive, etc) was replaced by the one that windows shows when it does not recognize a file.When I tried to fix it, it became worse. Now when I double click one of my hard drives it will now not open but goes directly to the search function for that drive.My hard disk icon or whatever it is called, and b.) Double clicking the hard drive will now open it instead of the search function.I wanted to print screen the problem, so that you guys could see it but I don't know where the print screen image is located.

Mar 21, 2006I installed 'Virtual CD 5.0.6' on my desktop I installed 10 virtual drives (labelled drive G to P inclusive) I have an external hard drive (labelled 'Local Disk: L) which was turned off when i installed Virtual CD.When i turned on the external HD it did not show in My Computer (presumably because i had allocated drive L as a virtual drive I have uninstalled Virtual CD (and all 10 virtual drives) but still do not get my External HD icon showing in 'My Computer'When i go into device manager the Maxtor External HD is showing. And when i go to the 'Unplug Eject Hardware' icon on my tool bar the HD shows as a USB Mass Storage Device (but without a letter)

Aug 22, 2005I have a 0 byte file setting on my desktop I can't get rid of. The error message says "cannot delete file. cannot read from source file or disk." Nor can you cut, copy, rename or do anything else with it. I googled the error message and have tried a number of suggestions without help, i.e.: safe mode and command prompt, etc. I tried Move on Reboot without success. I even resorted to restoring back prior to before the time this started without success. It was originally a business email that I saved to my desktop. When I opened the email to read it this icon appeared. when I deleted the original email this one stuck around and around and around. There must be some registry edit or something else I can do to get rid of it.

Feb 10, 2009I help the silver haired generation with issues they may have with their computers and peripherals. I have come across this one machine, belonging to an older lady, who's grand kids have some how managed to lock her out of her CD/DVD and Floppy drives. This is happening in Windows XP Home. The only account that is active is the lady's own administrator account. The drives are visible in My Computer and Device Manager, but have big red no access symbols on them. I have looked everywhere i can think of to solve this, but have come up short.

Feb 9, 2005I am experiencing this problem with my CD-R/W driver. I have windows XP and 2000 both installed on my system. The CD Drive is visible from windows 2000, but when i go to windows XP, i dont see the CD Drive there in My Computer. It used to be there earlier, but then it disappeared. Normally when some bad CD is inserted, it disappears ,but it appears again on restart. Now its not appearing altogether !!! I know that its driver is the cause. Will I need to download a driver for it ? What might be the reason? Howcome it is functioning okay in Windows 2000?

New F G H I Removable Drives Under My Computer
Sep 14, 2005Just discovered that along with Local Disk "C", DVD-RW "D" and "CD" E drive. I now have 4 new "Removable" drives FGHI. Dont know where they came from, but every time I start or re-start my PC the "SafelyRemove Hardware" icon appears in the right bottom of my screen. Cant get rid of it, and where did these removable drives come from???

Jan 2, 2007Can you create a pagefile.sys on removable HDD's? I apparently cannot. I wanted to set an initial and max Pagefile amount of 500MB to 750MB each across all drives except C. Even though the system "seems" to have set the amount of space I allocated in the Virtual Memory section, it has created only ONE 500MB pagefile.sys on my H (fixed) drive. That amount is confirmed on the Advanced Tab for Performance Options section by the statement "Total Paging File For All Drives: 500". I have set a small initial and max amount of 2MB to 50MB on my system drive (C) which is recommended since you do not want a large swap file on the same HDD as your OS, but that does not show neither. Why did the system not create the other Swap Files? Does it have to need it before it creates it?

In this case, I will have two of these removable hard drives, only one of which will be in use at any time, swapping in and out with each other every week.Since these hard drives will also contain the OS, how do I deal with XP licensing and authentication? Since there's only *one* computer, can I install and authorize a single copy of XP (Pro) on both removable hard drives? It seems unfair I would have to buy two copies of XP if only one is going to be used on the single computer at any given time.
