I have a computer used for weekly backups that will utilize a removable hard drive that gets swapped out every week for offsite storage. In this case, I will have two of these removable hard drives, only one of which will be in use at any time, swapping in and out with each other every week.Since these hard drives will also contain the OS, how do I deal with XP licensing and authentication? Since there's only *one* computer, can I install and authorize a single copy of XP (Pro) on both removable hard drives? It seems unfair I would have to buy two copies of XP if only one is going to be used on the single computer at any given time.
more precisely, what leads XP to decide what is removable and what isn't? Example: System 1 is a P4 built in a Shuttle SFF case with the provided MB; 1 SATA hard disk with three partitions, 1 DVD-ROM on PATA, 1 floppy on floppy channel, 1 multi-format flash reader on USB; the system sees two of the flash slots as removable storage. System 2 is an Athlon 64 built on an Epox Nvidia+ MB. 1 SATA hard disk (with two partitions), 1 SATA DVD-ROM (using a bridge adapter), 4 hard disks on PATA, 1 floppy on floppy channel, 1 multi-format flash reader on USB; the system sees _both_ SATA drives as being removable along with two of the flash slots. Either system properly sees an external hard disk on USB or Firewire as being removable.
I have just reinstalled XP Pro. I have a SATA hard drive and have to install drivers during install. I didn't install the drivers this time assuming they would still be in the system. Ever since XP thinks the hard drive is a removable drive. I tried reinstalling again but nothing.
(*Get some free giggles out of M$'s definitions for a "system" and "boot" partition. Hint: the partition that is used to boot your machine is NOT called "boot", and the partition that holds your operating system is NOT called "system". http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314470)
I would like to use several removable hard drive bays on several PCs.Then have a hard drive with XP on it and take it with me to each machine as I need to. It does not need to hot-swap and I doubt I am breaching the Microsoft EULA because I could only use it on one PC at a time.I believe that the activation is based on points gathered from the items installed in each PC it is installed on and they would differ from PC to PC. Especially things like the NIC with it's own MAC address.
Last Tuesday when I turned my computer on, I got the message ?A disk read error occurred, press crtrl+alt+delete to restart?. Since then I have been searching online for a way to get my computer back up & running. The specs of my computer:Dell Inspiron 9100 NotebookWindows XP Pro SP3P4 @ 3.2 Ghz w/ Hyper Threading1 gb Memory 160 gb Western Digital PATA/IDE HD (Replaced original 80 gb HD in May 08 b/c too small Removable internal DVD/CD-RW drive (& a removable internal floppy dis Purchased in Oct. 04.)
All of a sudden my PC isn't finding a removable drive when i plug my camera into the USB port. I'm trying to copy pics from my digital camera and have always used the removable drive function in My Computer...now it's not working. other USB hardware (keyboard, mouse etc) are working fine. I've changed the cable, installed the camera driver disk, tried finding new hardware, and tried different USB ports to no avail.Camera is an Episilom 1.3 digital dreams and is working fine. Running Win XP SP2 on AMD Semprom 2800+ 2 GHz processor. Mobo is ASRock K7Upgrade-600
My XP Pro has an old 40GB harddrive. I have a new 60GB I want to switch into it. My plan is to slave the 60 and use something like True Image to transfer all. I want to remove the 40 completely. Will this violate MS license? Will I have to reactivate? Am I on the right track?
i have 2 hard drives with xp on them. one though only small works fine. the other (120gB ) will boot from cd or floppy but once xp is running all removable disk drives are " not available ". fixed drives (slave hard drives are ok. it has not always been like this. does anyone have any ideas please?
Just discovered that along with Local Disk "C", DVD-RW "D" and "CD" E drive. I now have 4 new "Removable" drives FGHI. Dont know where they came from, but every time I start or re-start my PC the "SafelyRemove Hardware" icon appears in the right bottom of my screen. Cant get rid of it, and where did these removable drives come from???
Can you create a pagefile.sys on removable HDD's? I apparently cannot. I wanted to set an initial and max Pagefile amount of 500MB to 750MB each across all drives except C. Even though the system "seems" to have set the amount of space I allocated in the Virtual Memory section, it has created only ONE 500MB pagefile.sys on my H (fixed) drive. That amount is confirmed on the Advanced Tab for Performance Options section by the statement "Total Paging File For All Drives: 500". I have set a small initial and max amount of 2MB to 50MB on my system drive (C) which is recommended since you do not want a large swap file on the same HDD as your OS, but that does not show neither. Why did the system not create the other Swap Files? Does it have to need it before it creates it?
How to store all Windows, Office and program settings on a removable USB HDD, so I would be able to work with the same settings on two Windows XP with the removable USB HDD connected?
See attached screen shot. The drives: E, F, G, H, are all parts of my multi-card reader. One is for MemoryStick, another is SD Cards, CompactFlash, etc. Would it be alright to rename these to something more recognizable at a glance? (for example, rename "Removable Disk (H)" to "SD Card") Or will it somehow mess up the way the drives read the cards?
I have a usb flash disk storage device and a flash mp3 player (usb) that will not show up in windows explorer as Removable Disks. Both devices show up in device manager as working correctly. I am running windows XP.
I'm creating this topic on behalf of a friend; basically, his CD drive, his ipod, and every removable storage device is no longer showing up within Windows XP after he recently installed a program called "u3". The drives do not show up in my computer or device manager. He has since removed the program to no avail. I've never had a problem like this so I'm unsure how to diagnose it
I have a portable flash disk usb storage device and a flash mp3 player (usb) that will not show up in windows explorer as Removable Disks. Both devices show up in device manager as working correctly. I am running windows XP.
My girlfriend's computer displays Removable Drives G:, H:, I:, J:, K:. There are no removable drives on this system except when we download pictures from the digital camera. Then we get an additional Removable Drive L:. Any idea what is causing this
All of my removable drives seem to have disappeared. I'e been on TweakUI in the Control anel and looked at the drives in there and all of them except from my local and disk drive have red crosses through them... It's the drive I use for my camera card

When I try to save something to disk it comes up with 'The parameter is incorrect', then when I close that one another pops up saying 'You do not have access to folder 'D:' see your administrator for access to this folder'Firstly D: is the removable disk drive and not a folder, secondly as I am the only one who has an 'account/user' then thought I was the administrator!
I'm pretty sure I have a virus on my PC itself and on my flash drive. CA keeps popping up every 10 seconds or so telling me that a virus has been detected and deleted on my removable drive. It's called INF/Slenfbot.GT and it's on my Autorun.inf file on my drive.
I have an odd issue with diskmgmt.msc or the disk managment feature of computer management (both the same thing). Anyway, it displays my fixed hard drive in my laptop just fine, however my SD/MMC cards, CD/DVD drives, external drives, etc.....do not show up. They are recognized however, and I can access my drive G: (the SD card) just fine through explorer and my computer. Is there any reason why they're not showing up in my disk management console? and is there a way to fix this?
We use a USB device which allows us to plug in IDE and SATA hard drives to test and read data. We use one computer for this testing and we test a lot of drives. Well recently the device started locking up the computer just as the computer finishes loading the drivers. I first thought it was the USB in the machine, but mice and keyboard both work in all the ports. I then thought it was the device but I tried it in another machine and it worked as it should. I tired plugging in a flash drive into the machine and it does the same thing.
I know that may seem like a relatively obvious question however I was hoping to flush out some details from people with more experience than I possess.I was told that if you have a retail copy of XP pro, if you stop using old machine and buy a new 1 then you can transfer your license across. I however purchased an OEM copy of XP pro about 4 years for my old laptop. I have not used it in a few years and was hoping that if I make a new computer I can use my old key. I am pretty sure when I try to activate it that it will say the key is no good and to call their help number but what details are stored on their system? If I say that I have simply formatted my old machine and are doing a new install will I then be able to use the code they give me for my new machine or is the code somehow 'locked' to the CPU number or something? If any1 has any experience migrating a license across then please advise me. I do not wish to use a pirated copy and will buy a new license if needed but hope that it is not neccesary since I paid for this license and I am happy to format my old machine and not use it again.
I cannot get it to come up at all. I tried everything and I'm now looking at reloading Windows. I have all the software that came with it, and I have a copy of XP home, but I can't find anything with the license key information. The F10 recovery does not work. F8 does not work. I cannot get Windows to load at all. Does anyone know how I can find out what the license key is? Will HP give me that info? I can call them..but I just hate talking with their tech support.
so my Mom bought an HP pc about a year ago, she doesn't seem very bothered, but my brother and I are constantly finding problems. so we've been talking about reinstalling the system with a regular xp home edition, but will her license code from mediacenter go in home? we don't want to install home just to find out that it wont work, but we don't want media center edition either!
What is a Windows XP license? Does one really exist? All the latest oem versions are now supplied in boxes, and in the box is a leaflet which states that the sticker for the pc is not the licence, but is to help the end user to determine whether or not the installation is genuine & not pirated.
does anyone know where I can get a cheap xp license, I have the cd, so I was wondering if there are any type of programs I could take advantage of to get a cheaper xp license..
