hi..found a computer in the garbage and i wanna get it going for my kids.At first it started in safe mode only.I tried to do checkdisk and i restarted now i get a bunch of messages saying missing files such as windowssystem32tfs.sys and isapnp.sys and agp440.sys. Like i said i have no software or anything for this computer but i do have a windows disk for another computer. How hard would it be to wipe the hard drives out, start over and find all my drivers?
Can anyone help me on my little problem? My computer at home has OS Xp and a few programs installed on the c drive which has a partition size of 10 gb, now all the programs should be using about 3 gb of space but it shows that 7 gb is in use. I check the c drive for temp and chk files and there are none. Select all the files including the ones that are hidden and take properties to find out the space they are on and it shows that it is 3 gb. What can possibly be holding back the other 4 gb and is there a way to free the space without formating the computer?
I am facing two problems with my lap top hp campac presario 2100. 1.The loptops battery to be changed. I dont know how many batteries are there. Any cmos battery there like any other pc. Pl advice. What would be the cost. and the model number . The hard disk requires replacement. I want to know the model numberor exact type of hard disk would be fit in. and the cost thereof.3. Windows xp home edition has been preloaded in the laptop. How to take a copy of the os and copy in the new hard disk. I have the serial number etc for the OS.
If I want to attach second hard disk with the same configuration of master hard disk, then system doesn't show second hard disk altogether or new hard disk begin to malfunction. Such as suddenly begin to give sounds like TICK, TICK TICK. Suddenly vanishes from the 'MY COMPUTER' drives. Suddenly denies to copy paste functions. BIOS shows both SATA drives. But Win XP doesn't load or simply hangs while starting up [booting up]. It happens when I attach second SATA drive with system. If only one SATA is attached, then WIN XP boots normally.
I have had someone working on my computer and now I have just noticed that my 2nd hard drive is not showing in my computer I have looked in belarc and it shows there I have looked in bios my main drive shows but not my 2nd. I am thinking that something is not connected have I got to go inside and operate?

When I look at the XP Dish management window, I see an unnamed 5Gb section to the left of C and D drives. It is subtitled (EISA configuration), what is this for? Also the XP help says that there should be a FREE SPACE optoin on the rt-clk menu of the lofical drives. I only see delete. Am I looking at the wrong place? (reason: I would like to create a new logcal drive.
This is my wife's Lenovo T61 and I've posted this in the laptop forums. While attempting to prep for a larger hard drive, I noticed that Disk management isn't showing any HD partitions. It does show the CD ROM device. It will not display USB external hard drive partitions but will display USB CD ROM devices. Device manager and explorer will display hard drives/partitions just fine. At this same time, I found that a scheduled chkdsk /f will not run. The PC just boots normally. Defrag will not run either. I was able to run sfc /scannow plus the Lenovo "disk doctor" utility and nothing is reported to be amiss. Another broken item was system restore. It was enabled but no restore points were available.
I have a usb flash disk storage device and a flash mp3 player (usb) that will not show up in windows explorer as Removable Disks. Both devices show up in device manager as working correctly. I am running windows XP.
XP kept giving me pop ups saying that i have a danerously low disk space.. i deleted all extra files and music and etc and i was fine for a few weeks but lately its doing the same thing. there are 4 accounts on this computer and two of which refuse to log onto the internet (NetZero) one of them freezes whenever you click anything that isnt the start menu.. actually if you click something the whole screen blinks and only the backround is visible for a second and then all the icons return.i cant get into hijackthis to run it and i cant use ad aware because my definitions are a month old and it refuses to dowload new ones, the erro message says that the files cant be read. spybot works but then when it comes time to delete files i get this message " unexpected error in fixing problems (stream-schreibfehler)"
I have 80GB hard drive on my computer. I only have 31GB free space. My total size is 74.5GB. So I'm assuming the 5.5 is made up of programs needed to run the computer. I have deleted all my music video and audio files/folders which were taking up even more space. I've tried defragmentation, emptying the recycle bin etc etc. I've uninstalled some rarely used programs. In my Program Files there are 49 Items taking up 34.3GB of space. Surely this is too much, I do have Nero and Roxio which take a lot of space. Looking at 'Control Panel' I see 'Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1', 'Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2' and also 'Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2'. Do I really need 1.1 and 2.0 if I have 3.0
I've got a very annoying problem with XP that I just can't figure out. I have spent hours and hours trying to fix this and posted on several forums to no avail My laptop died last week when I spilt water all over it. The harddrive was not effected and stayed completely dry.I am basically trying to save the data on the harddrive and completely wipe/format it.I bought a 2.5" SATA > USB enclosure/caddy and put my laptop HDD into the enclosure. When I plugged the enclosure into my spare PC using the power/USB Y cable, the enclosure powers up and the LED light comes on. I can also feel/hear the laptop HDD inside spinning. A message comes up on the PC saying "New hardware found; USB mass storage device". Then about 1 minute later it shows the following message
I have a portable flash disk usb storage device and a flash mp3 player (usb) that will not show up in windows explorer as Removable Disks. Both devices show up in device manager as working correctly. I am running windows XP.
I have two logical hard drives and my C drive is Logical, How do i make that my Physical hard drive so i could update to windows 7. Because it's not showing any drivers under Disk management but it shows them under disk defragment
I just recently noticed when I went into control panel administrative tools computer management that my disk management add in/snap in is missing information. It should show me my drive numbers and more. Also there is no right click options when I try to use them on the partitions.Check the picture attached.Probably a microsoft tech would know the answer.
I'm running a desktop PC (Dell Dimension 4700) with XP Pro SP3, 1.5 GB RAM. Both keyboard and mouse are USB. Over the last several weeks the computer freezes and I am puzzled about how to go through the troubleshooting. It is rather infrequent (maybe 4-5 times over 6-8 weeks?)When it freezes there is no apparent disk activity. The display appears perfectly normal. It appears to be random and infrequent. When it freezes there is no apparent response to either keyboard or mouse. Pushing the power button briefly does nothing, but pushing and holding the power button does result in the expected shutdown.
My external USB hard drives always used to show up in either My Computer, or Windows Explorer's double pane view in Windows XP. Although they still show in My Computer, they do not show up in Windows Explorer anymore, unless I select them in My Computer First - and then choose the "Folders" selection. do Not give me the standard answers which are for External drives that don't show up Anywhere .. because the drives DO show up in Disk Management, and they DO show up in My Computer, and this is Not a new drive that needs to be formatted.
I have a Lenovo Thinkcentre PC, with windows XP. I'm having a problem with the PC in that although I use an external hard drive to make sure the PC hard drive is not full and have very little saved on the actual PC, when I look in properties on the 'C' drive by right clicking on the 'C' drive icon, it is showing that there is 118GB used and only 26.1GB free space (total capacity 144GB). But when I go into the 'C' drive and manually explore all the different folders, there is nowhere near this much space used. Probably less than 5Gb that I can account for. I think it is drastically slowing my system, and also every few days I get a message that my computers performance is degraded and that I should defragment. I was under the impression that you didn't need to defragment anywhere near this frequently....
I have an external usb hd enclosure with an ntfs 320 gb IDE drive inside it.. when I connect it to my PC it shows up as local disk but I would rather it show as a removable disk so I can properly eject it. How would go about doing this?? thanks! (i have xp sp3)
Iv'e installed XP pro on my new computer.after installing all the software i need on the computer i checked how much disk space i'm using before creating an image, and then i encountered a strange thing. When i measure th used disk space using ALT+ENTER from the root directory all the file amounts to about 9GB (all visible and all accounted), but when i check the disk properties it reports over 20GB used. When i created the image, the file weighed over 20GB also even thought i don't have 20GB of files.I know for sure that this is very unlikely that i'm actually using 20GB and that ALT+ENTER reports a wrong size because on my other computer.
I have created a Bart PE bootable XP cd. I can boot into windows using this CD I would like to know how to copy the data in my hard disk to pen drive or flash drive.
It says that TOTAL SIZE = 39 GB And Free Space = 5 GB Which means that the size of all files on C is 34 GB But when I select all files including Hidden files and Right Click> Properties, its size of all files is only 27 GB.I did clear recycle bin and disk defragmenter C, but still the same. So why is that?
I am cloning my existing hard drive in my laptop (sata) to an external hard drive (pata) in preparation for installing a new larger hard drive (sata)in the laptop. Can I, or how do I transfer the cloned data from the external (pata) to the new internal hard drive (sata)? Thanks in advance and I apoligize if this is a rudimentary question as this is my first time attempting something like this.
I can not access hard disk properties because Windows Explorer hangs whenever I Right click on a hard drive icon. I am running WXP pro SP2 completely up to date with updates.
if someone could tell me how to format windows xp home edition from the bios and not using the xp disk. I have already tried right clicking on drive c and selecting format but the message says windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.
So I closed all open programs that I could but still no luck. Then I tried the format from running the run command and typing format c:but I get this message format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format can run if this volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid. would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (y/n) so I type y for yes and hit enter then nothing
I upgraded my server, basically all I kept was the two hard drives from the old machine. The one hard drive is for the system files (~13GB) and the other is for storage, user files, etc (~160GB). I figured that then I reinstalled Windows 2000 Server on the System disk, I would just have to assign the other disk a drive letter and be on my way. Instead, in the disk management console, I get "Disk 1 [the 160GB) Dynamic Unreadable" I can revert to a basic disk, but it says I will lose all my information. It is imperative that the data on this disk be recovered.
i have a hp compaq dc7100 it has a sata hard drive in it, i need the drivers for it, not able to load xp on in locks up, i do not have the drives, i checked with hp not able to find.
Dell 4500 with 256mb RAM 40 gB hard drive. Son tries to load game and system says not enough memory. Only 4gB free. I update ZA, Spybot, Adaware and Norton and run everything. Find 3 non-viral potential threats through NAV. update spywareblaster. Run diskcleanup and empty temp internet files. These are all things I do regularly (not every day but more than twice a wweek) and I backup to external drive once a month at least
