why does it say warning disk write cache is disabled.but in device manager everything seems fine and are there any other things you recomend i do to get a faster bootup. everything performs great but there may be more i can do for a even faster bootup.

Remove the write-protection or use another disk." i dont know how to remove the write protection. i tried to move other files to the MP3, but all files give me the same message, even the ones that are already in the MP3 folder
View 12 Replies View RelatedMy startup time went up drastically.
I have disabled all but two of the automatic startup items using msconfig. My system used to start in less than two minutes, easily. Now it takes a more than a minute or two longer than that.
I know what the problem is; the only three items that show in the system tray after startup are:
1) The AVG Antivirus icon .
2) The Spybot SD Resident icon.
3) Local Area Connection (This is the icon which shows two computer monitors with screens that light up and go dark periodically)
Now, after the problem started, the last item, the Local Area Connection icon is the one that doesn't load, for VERY long. So it may be something to do with that. Also, just before the icon finally shows up(after which point the computer is fine to use) I've notice that a Windows security notification icon appears...it flashes, for just a second, and then is replaced by the Local Area Connection icon. For the record, these are the two icons I'm talking about:

I have had my automatic updates disabled for a while now, so you might think that that's the reason the notification is showing up but I've already disabled that notification using Windows Security Center.
Try making my laptop less slow and not freeze all the time when doing the simplest of tasks.
However, my problem happens after trying to disable the Startup Items from the MSconfig dialogue.
-After I have unchecked the boxes I don't want, I click OK or Apply;
-It then tells me I have to restart for the changes to take place, so I do this;
-Then after completing its restart a message says that "The System Configuration Utility is in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts up."
-it then opens the MSconfig dialogue box again.
If I just close the utility or click ok, sure enough it keeps on opening every time I startup. Or else, what it's trying to convince me to do is to start up in Normal Mode. But I won't do this because then all the Startup Items I'd disabled become enabled again and the whole lengthy task was a waist of time!
I have a Kingmax 256MB Memory stick which we used once and went to format it and got the prompt "Write Protected Disk" can any one tell how to unwrite protect it. It has no switch on it to lock it or write protect it.

Unfortunatly, a major thunderstorm passed thru my area and my computer was shut down hard and when I brought it up Windows was trashed, missing system files, some noise about disk-drive errors, etc. So I had to install Windows on another drive on the system. I can copy files from anywhere on the drive to the new windows drive except for "my documents" WEHRE OF COURSE Visual Studio Projects, Word documents, IPod, etc, everything, my important stuff is being kept being kept. The message I get is "Access is denied"
When I bring the system up in Safe Mode with networking and look at the security permission tab for that folder I see that my SID Is not there. When I try and add it (my user ID) it validates it and it looks like I can now have access to it, great, but when I click apply the response is "media is write protected" cannot apply permission changes. When I try and copy a file from my new windows drive to the original I get the message Drive is write protected
Try to defrag it from new windows - same message
Try to repair it from new windows - same message

I have winXP pro , and when I start them after I see desktop, I get warning message, telling me that my computer is unsafe, that someone else can see my files, and to follow remove instruction. Link forwards me to a web page with "antispyware software", but problem is still there. I've noticed that this is a screen that appears over my desktop and I'm unable to move it or tu turn it down. Task manager shows no application running.

I have run a full virus scan, Spybot, Adaware and Spy doctor. nothing has been found that would suggest a problem. Any ideas as to why? It's not every time and only at start up. I just cleaned out a slightly infection of spyware and viruses on this computer and everything looks nice a clean but unfortunately there seems to be some residual problems.My startup is much slower, the 'loading your personal settings' can take upwards of 2 minutes. But, it can by by-passed by hitting ctrl-alt-del. Once I get to the desktop I notice that Norton Anti-Virus is disabled and it stays disabled until the icons load which ALSO takes another 2-3 minutes. I can open programs and they run fine but I am unable select anything on the desktop or right click on it.
I've never had slowdown like this on here before. It also only seems to be happening on this one windows account, the other ones load up much faster. I've cleaned it the best I can running all the normal apps and some other cleaners. Even tried restoring the desktop back to the windows xp default appearance.
Yesterday I had 560 MB's of free space on Drive C, today I suddenly received a low disk warning. I had 163 MB's remaining, then a few minutes later I had 90 MB's. I searched Drive C for files/folders over 1 MB that had been modified in the last week and there were a half dozen huge files that were part of a Windows XP update it was trying to install. I turned off the automatic updates so I can do them manually from now on, but can I do anything about those files that were modified today to free up space? One of them is marked a temporary file - can I delete it?

The word "disk" scared me, so I checked the entire Event Viewer, and found 25 of these errors, from Aug 1 2005 through Sep 3 2005. If this event was cataloged earlier, I don't know, because the Event Viewer only goes back to Aug 1. I checked System Restore for Aug 1, 2005 and found a couple of things; 1) an accidental MS "update" to NVIDIA GeForce4 MX driver 5.12 -- but we've had the 6.1.7.7 driver for a long time now. The 5.12 screws up the display resolution, big time. I reinstalled the 6.17; resolution is fine; but I'm wondering if this could have something to do with the Event 51 warning. Also, on that same date, something called Software Distribution Service 2.0 is listed three times, and I don't know why. I don't even know what it is. I've researched the web, and can't find anything that seems to apply -- other than potential for a hard drive crash. Just what I don't need. I'm finally at the point where I'd like to do a fresh install. I can't afford to pay my $6 cab fare let alone $100 or more on an OS I already own and everyone I know has Vista. Is there a way to get a free copy of the setup disk, maybe one that's already been used, directly from Microsoft if you can provide proof that you already own a legitimate copy of the OS so you can just use it for the installation part and put in your own license info? If not through Microsoft, what about from the manufacturer, have you known any of them to give you an option like that where they can send you a "dummy disc" or something just so you can reinstall? My PC was made by Systemax.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI can't make a good MS-DOS startup disk (for BIOS flashing) from XP SP2.I select the "Make an MS-DOS startup disk" from the Format dialog.Sometimes it gives up without a warning (i.e. the progress bar resets itself and the "Start" button goes active again). Sometimes it completes with a success message. However the disks never boot. I get the following messages from the BIOS (abbreviated a bit!): Looking for boot record on floppy... OK I've tried with a least 7 different floppy disks, all with the same result. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get it to work? I've also tried to make a MS-DOS boot disk on a Windows 2000 machine by downloading some freeware, but this does not work. I think the floppy drive is OK because I can boot from a Linux floppy disk (memtest86).

View 7 Replies View RelatedEverytime I boot Windows, I get a message saying that I should allow check disk to run. However, if I let it go through, it will never complete. After about 27%, I get another message for about 1 second that I can't read. All I get out of it is that windows incurred a problem and then it disappears to start the same process over again. I can't run check disk from windows, either. If I just cancel it, everything boots up as normal.

I restarted and windows froze again on the startup screen. I restarted in safe mode and ran a disk check (scheduled it for next restart). The system booted up after the disk check completed (it said it found and fixed errors). However, it was dead slow,. I have avira antivir personal(updated with the latest definitions), I ran a full system scan, and it found nothing but a "hidden object". Here's the report:-
