I am trying to install windows XP Pro on a Dell Dimension 9200 with SATA drives. I have tried the F6 but I don't have a floppy drive, is there a way to use a USB thumb drive, to provide the SATA driver?
View 3 RepliesIt's looking like I have to re-install C+XP Pro SP2. I have never installed XP Pro SP2 before myself on SATA drives - I know that you used to have to get the hard disc drivers from somewhere first so you could use them in the set up process. I've never done this either! Is this still an issue with XP SP2 (I have a full install Windows XP Pro SP2 CD). If so, could someone outline the details for me or point me in the right direction web wise.

XP - Primary partition of the 2nd disk.Now, The way i was thinking of doing it was to install XP first, then install Vista, And modify the boot.ini to find the entry for XP.Is there any difference in modification of the boot.ini file when using sata drives, and is there any difference when making mods in Vista (As i have only edited the boot.ini in XP)
I have a computer at home with two identical 160 GB WD SATAII drives in it and I want a copy of XP on each drive. The first drive (Which I have been using as my gaming computer) has already got XP installed and I want to keep it pretty much free of anything but games so it won't affect performance. On the second drive, I would like to install another copy of XP and use this drive for my common use and with the primary intent of using it for a HDTV capture device. I've researched it for a while and have almost only been able to find information concerning dual booting with IDE drives using a jumper switching device so you don't have to dismantle the computer every time you switch drives.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI want to install Windows XP on a new SATA HDD drive. The computer in question came with Windows Vista installed. There is no IDE option in the BIOS. There is no floppy drive on the unit. So it looks like I might have to slipstream all the drivers, etc., on to the unit (which I have no clue how to do). I do not have the motherboard make or model number, nor do I have the motherboard CD. My business partner is trying to take the cover off the laptop as we speak, but we're having trouble getting it off. Thus, as of now, we can't identify the motherboard manufacturer or the serial number.
Can anyone here point us in the right direction? The computer in question is a Compaq Presario c769us (laptop). It was purchased in June 2008. This all started when my business partner decided to use a Vista System Recovery CD to overwrite the existing copy of Vista that he had on the computer. After he ran the disk, the system stopped working. So right now, we have the old hard drive, which contains a non-working copy of Vista on it (which we can 't delete), and we have the new hard drive (a 250 GB Hitachi). So maybe we could just delete the copy of Vista on the old hard drive - the self drive test checked out okay on the old hard drive. So I guess the two options are - figure out a way to put XP on the NEW hard drive, or figure out a way to put XP on the OLD hard drive and delete Vista from it first. If we can put XP on the old hard drive and remove Vista from it, we could take the new hard drive back, and get our money back, too.
I have a Acer Aspire AM5640-E5520A Intel Pentium 2 QUAD, 2.4GHz with a MCP73PV motherboard and SATA drive. When I try to install XP (which I like better than Vista) the set up acts ok ,loading files, until it gets to "setup is starting windows".. Then I get the BSOD and a message saying STOP:0x0000007b. I have tried to change the bios setting for the HD to IDE but I do not find anything about storage or AHCI. All i see is a place to change raid configuration. Raid is disabled. But i have tried it with raid being enabled.

Said it could not find a certain .in file. So I created a new Barts PE using a Windows XP Pro CD with SP1 and a blank CD to write the ISO image. After rebooting with Barts PE CD with ISO image, it looked fine and booted okay into Barts PE---BUT---it could not see my hard drives.

I bought a second sata hard drive last week and installed Vista on it.I just can't figure out the correct boot.ini for this to work,I get an missing NTLD message, when I try to boot from Vista, but the XP one works with that configuration.I can boot off the Vista one fine if I set it in the bios boot order to come up before the XP hard drive, so the drive and the OS are fine
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got this old mobo Abit VT7. I want to install XP on it. However, the XP disc doesn't recognize SATA hard drives. So I downloaded official SATA driver from the Abit website http://tinyurl.com/kua5qz and tries to slipstream my XP disc following the instructions set forth here http://tinyurl.com/37anvn . I am not too clear how to incorporate the drivers from the official drivers, but Nlite seems to be able to find the drivers once I pointed it to the top unzipped driver directory, and I selected the XP folder for it. However, the newly created XP disc still fails to recognize the SATA hard drives. Alternatively, I believe I could have a boot floppy which would load the drivers in, then I launch the setup in the XP installation CD via command line. But I don't know how to create a boot disc which has those SATA drivers in.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set up a dual-boot with Ubuntu and XP64. Initially I just had Ubuntu on my one sata hdd and XP on an ide hdd. I decided it'd be better running XP on the sata drive too, so I resized my linux partition with gparter, and created a new NTFS partition.The problem is, when I try to install XP onto the drive, it cannot seem to see the sata drive. Nothing was listed at all except the ide drives and my usb drive.I did some looking and found the 64 bit sata drivers for my motherboard, managed to load them onto a floppy and load them into the XP setup. This was all fine again until the time to select a partition, where it seemed to list the drive, but only shows 'Unknown disk' 'There is no disk in the drive'.I tried deleting the partition I made with gparter to see if XP could at least see the 'unallocated space' but to no avail.I even tried making a boot disk in nLite with the sata drivers, but it made no difference (not really surprisingly).If I try to use the 32 bit drivers that came with my mobo, it won't let me install XP.I'm all out of ideas to why it won't work.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy computer came preinstalled with a whole bunch of HP garbage I didn't want.. So I bought a copy of WINxp pro and tried to install.. Upon doing this It couldn't read my hard drive, which I later determined was due to the fact it is a SATA hard drive and the XP install cd doesnt have the drivers for it. Solution was, I changed a setting in my computer's BIOS to change the raid mode to IDE instead of SATA, then the install proccess went fine. Problem is now I have to keep it at IDE, and if I turn it back to SATA the computer retstarts after the Starting Windows screen with the Windows icon, I assume this is due to the fact that Windows didn't bother installing any SATA drivers since I installed in IDE mode... Could somone please point me in the right direction as to what I need to install/configure to allow WIN to boot up with my BIOS using SATA mode?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Windows XP on my new Serial ATA hard drive, it has been formatted everything seems ok, When I start installing windows XP pro on this machine it seems like it just can't detect the damn hard drive, when I set it as boot on te serial ata drive eeverything works fine, it goes as C:/ but I just can't switch to my cd drive with windows XP to install it.When I boot up my other hrd drive with windows xp, I can actually see my hard drive in windows explorer.

I hate Vista. I'm installing XP.
I have a SATA drive. I don't have a floppy drive.
I believe I can do it in the BIOS.
I've changed the HD setting in the BIOS from SATA to ATA (my only choice). XP installs fine. But now I need to change it back to SATA. I do that, restart and I get the blue screen with an automatic restart. I'm sure I need to add the SATA drivers somewhere, but I'm not sure where or how.
I've looked around and I'm having a hard time finding good info on this. I've looked up stuff like slipstreaming SATA drivers into the windows disc, but I don't think I'm doing it right. I got the correct SATA drivers from gateways website. I'm pretty sure this system just uses the intel SATA Chipset. Any way if anyone could help me install XP on my Gateway C-141XL laptop without having a floppy disc I'd really appreciate it.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've this habit of installing softwares on different drives. The OS goes into C drive. Any other softwares that are from trustworthy sources goes into C drive along with the OS. I then install all the games, other softwares from not so trustworthy sources or any new programs I'm trying(like a typing tutor) in D drive. I keep E drive for storage purpose. This is my arrangement for my computer and on all of my friends computers on which I installed the Windows.
I thought it would help keep the OS safe(!) and reinstalling or upgrading would be easy and I don't have to reinstall all the softwares I installed. Am I right in that? What are these dll files. For any software I installed whether in C drive or D drive there seems to be a dll file in the C drive. 1) Does it really matter where I install the softwares(apart from the OS) or does having a seperate drive (usually D drive) for installing 3rd party softwares makes any sense?
2) Do I really have to install all the softwares (installed on D drive) again if I format and reinstall OS in C drive?
My initial installation went without a hitch, until I noticed that my 200G drive was registering at 137G. Through some investigation I found that this was because I installed XP, then later added the SP2. I was able to partition and use the "unallocated portion of the drive" but would like to consolidate the drive.
These leads me to the questions I have...
1) How can I install XP Pro on a system with a 200G system drive and get it to reckognize the full disk size, even though I need to download the SP2?
2) Is there a way to get Windows XP with SP2 included at a reduced price from MS if we return the copy we have?
3) If I decide to set up a RAID system, and am using three 200G drives, will XP only reckognize them as 137G each until I install SP2?
I installed XP into my computer. I didn't mean to, but while I was installing xp i set it to have 2 drives on my computer. Local Disk C - 60gb Local Disk C - 60gb. My computer comes with 120 gb in total. How do I take my C:// and combine it with my D:// so I only have one local disk drive with 120gb in it?

View 6 Replies View Relatedi am reinstalling windows on a new partition of a new drive and I have several harddrives. when I boot from the windows xp setup cd and it lists all the drives, the one i want to install windows on is currently listed as drive G, but I want it to become drive C. If I just select to install on drive G will it change it to drive C? or do i have to do the thing where I unplug all the drives except the one I want and do the install and then plug the other ones back in afterwards? (i'm reinstalling bc i tried it before and windows ended up on the current drive G, which used to be drive J bc I forgot to unplug some usb devices..)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a RAID system setup as JBOD on both drive in my laptop and I formatted using DBAN... Now i boot with Windows XP Pro so i can install it and it only recognizes one of my drives. I loaded my RAID drivers. I go ahead and try to install XP on it anyway. I tried to format the drive again using FULL format, i tried a Quick Format, and I also tried leaving it as is. It will install the setup files and reboot my computer. So i take out the XP disc but then it doesnt recognize any disks. Does anyone know how i can reintsall xP back on this sysetm or how I can get XP to recognize both my drives even if i slipstreamed my RAID drivers in it already.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm pretty computer savvy, but I've always struggled to confugure this RAID motherboard, but I've never encountered an error like this. I formatted a 60Gb Maxtor D740X-6L IDE drive with NTFS through an external harddrive connected to a laptop. THe drive is now blank. I connected this as a master on Channel 3 IDE on my Abit KG7 RAID mother board. I also connected my CD Writer to IDE channel 2 as a master, with a copy of WIndows XP in it. (I connected it like this because it doesn't recognise my harddrive on Channel 1 or 2 on the first page.)
When I try to boot I get the following error: BOOTMGR is missing. The strange thing is, as it boots it lists all four drive channels, and only shows Primary Master: 6L060J3 (presumably IDE channel 1). It does not show my CD writer, and infact the drive is connected to IDE channel 3. As you can see in attached photo1........
i have 2 HDD one with the os and the other one for data.I reformatted my data drive by deleting and re-creating partition via windows xp boot cd. Afterwards it went through the whole windows instillation thing.How can i reformat this drive without installing windows xp afterwards?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem.
- I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery.
- I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install.
- I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help.
- I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters.
- i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios.
I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.
