Can I safely install directx 10 or 11 on my system? Where do I find the downloadable executable install file? Will upgrading the DirectX in my system cause any problems with any current programs I'm running on my system (mostly MS office, a Couple of MMO's and a stand alone game or two)?

Just formatted my desktop and installed a fresh copy of XP Pro on it. I did a search on google and found that some people said XP does not support directX 10, but then when you go to the directX website to download it, Windows XP IS under the list of "Supported Operating Systems". So is 10 supported by XP, or do I have to download 9.0c?

I've been getting a message from 'startup mechanic' to advise me that program 'uuespo' c:windows/system32/uuespo.exe is attempting to run at system startup. I checked the description and it's meant to be a nuisance program that changes your IE homepage so I disabled it and deleted the file from the above path. when I right click 'start' and 'search' nothing happens, the same with left click 'start' 'search'. If I right click a folder in windows explorer and select 'search' nothing happens, but I can open windows explorer, then select search, but this only allows me to search the whole drive. So in my haste I deleted 'uuespo.exe' from the recycle bin. The program still seems to be install somewhere tho and startup mechanic is still flashing up messages telling me it's trying to register at startup. I'm also having problems within Internet explorer since this all started, in that it won't open pop-up screens from trusted sites.

I've been getting a lot of generic process win32 problems to do with lsass.exe and svchost.exe and im wondering if this has anything to do with it.
In my ZoneAlarm Firewall program control, I have 'Generic Host Process Win32 Services' SVCHOST.exe as a very high trust level. The settings look like this:
Access
Trusted - Yes
Internet - Yes
Server
Trusted - Yes
Internet - No
As for 'LSA (Shell Export Version)' LSASS.exe it also has a very high trust level and the following settings:
Access
Trusted - Yes
Internet - Yes
Server
Trusted - Ask user
Internet - Ask user
Are these settings correctly configured?

I went to a lot of trouble establishing a list of Trusted Sites in my security configuration. Now every time I want to enter one of these sites, windows tells me that one of my trusted sites (identifying it) wants to enter, should I let it? Does anyone know why this happens - what is the point of making a list if I am being asked anyway each time.

I have a new Asus P4S800D-X, Pentium 4, 3.0E, two matched 160G, SATA hardrives.
I can not install the OS.
I can not get past the BIOS installation and set up.
When I apptempt to install from the CD I get an error message stating an error reading disk and I am asked to restart.
I have set and reset the jumpers on the CD and CD-RW optical drives.
The BIOS has set the hard drives to RAID 0 configuration.
I am not sure if this is a motherboard, optical drive or disk drive problem.

Please provide some tip or guidelines to help me with this script for me to reinstall MDAC.inf unattended. The script runs properly but the only problem is that, it'll prompt for "i386" folder originally in Windows XP cd. I've copied the whole folder to one of our network drive and was wondering is there any commands that could be added to the script above so that it won't prompt for the "i386" folder location so that no user interaction is required?

I recently bought a new computer and had windows XP installed as well as having Norton AntiVirus program installed (came with a package). Now, when I try installing a HP printer the installation CD does not work but when I try it on my laptop it does work. Could it be the norton blocking the CD installation? What would I have to do in order to fix this problem.

I have recently tried to reinstall some oldish games (rainbow 6, Total Annhilation) and when you select install, an error pops up:
16 bit windows subsystem
C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. Examination of that folder shows that I do not have a file called Autoexec.nt at all, is this correct? These games have run on this PC before and the error applies to multiple games suggesting a system problem. Is there a way of repairing or checking windows to replace this file. I did get a virus recently however Norton said it quarantined it - this might have
affected windows though prior to this I had noticed no differeance.

Have read many threads on this and other sites and tried everything suggested (except swap out CD drive - don't have a working older drive to try). This PC is at least 5-6 yrs old - has original Hitachi CD/DVD Drive (reader, not writer). Have unplugged ALL devices from back of computer. Just has (1)internal CD/DVD drive and (1) internal LS120 floppy drive left installed.Something happened to computer - Windows XP Pro would no longer run. Tried re-installing Windows XP Pro. using OEM CD with hologram. Attempted to do a repair install, instead of a fresh install - hoping to be able to keep all programs/devices intact.During installation, computer got stuck on: "The file 'asms' on Windows XP Pro Serv Pack1 CD is needed" Type the path where the file is located and click OK""Copy files from: Global RootDeviceCDRom0I386."The screen is locked, and I can not type or change anything. Can NOT change the path. Can not hit SHIFT F10 to get to a DOS prompt.

I'm running windows xp pro...i'm trying to install an ethernet card and a box comes up asking for the windows cdrom to look for drivers it needs...problem is i don't have my copy of windows xp...is there a place on the computer that i can browse to find what it's looking for...i guess i'm asking if when windows xp pro is installed does it copy everything to the computer in a file somewhere. otherwise i don't know if it would be better just to buy another ethernet card or if i would have the same problem. i do have the floppy that came with the ethernet card but it says the file i need is not on the floppy...?

Vista was installed on my pc. I want to install XP Pro. I come to a point wherer I get a message that says oembios.bin could not be copied during the beginning og installation. Everything else get copied. Now after the installation it I get I message that preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error code: 080070002. I searched and get a solution on this issue as well (By expanding OEMBIOS.BI_ and move the OEMBIOS.BIN to the SYSTEM 32 folder in Safe mode).
When restarting windows the desktop background image is blue and a lot of windows programs are missing (Internet Explorer, Remote desktop and more). It doesn't let me even get into msconfig. Now, I know that the installation disc work perfect and it isn't the cd. I do have a HP_Recovery partition and tempted to format it but I also don't want to face any complications later on. But it seems that it is HP_Recovery that blocks xp instalation out, since it indicates that the laptop is locked to VISTA in BIOS.

After formatting my computer im now in the stage of installing all the bits and bobs back on again. nothing will install and leaves me with the error message: "Error: -1603 Fatal error during installation. Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information" I couldnt find anything about why this is happening but i found a way how to solve it. to solve it it said: "Well problem finally solved. All you have to do is add a group called "Users" in the groups and users settings of the administrative settings and it will install..." I am using "Windows XP Home Edition" and "Service Pack 1" and i have not found anywere that allows me to do this.

I recently reinstalled XP but to my chagrin, it seems I cannot install the manufacturers drivers for graphics adapter or monitor, but am stuck with the generic, default drivers whose performance is horrible. It takes forever for the screen to update. I used to know what to do to fix this, but have forgotten how.
