View 2 RepliesUpon leaving my last company I was given one of the older laptops (too old for anyone to care to use anymore), an IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad. The laptop was purchased with OEM licenses for Windows XP and Office. I have not reinstalled XP on this PC, and although I no longer can connect to my old company's domain, I have been continuing to use the PC by logging on to the domain, as I am not able to log onto the PC in any other way. This is, by the way, annoying for me, because I can access the internet but cannot access my other computers at home since they are not on the "company" domain and so I do not have permission to do so.Now the problem: This laptop is beginning to have some sort of problem, where applications like Firefox just suddenly freeze up and cannot be terminated, not even using Task Manager. I need to hardboot the machine each time as I cannot even shutdown in a normal fashion.
So how is the best way to a) fix this problem and b) get permission to log on to the machine "locally" and not on the company domain? One thing I am thinking about is just re-installing the computer, and I have the Windows XP license info on the label on the bottom of the laptop, and I suppose I can get the office license key using something like ProduKey. It would be nice to avoid having to do this, however, as I do not have the Lenovo CD's and would have to reinstall everything from the net. Any advice on what is best to do? How to find/fix the freezes of software like Yahoo and Firefox? How to get away from the company domain? I as user have admin priviledges to the PC but cannot, for example, touch the antivirus software and that is irritating.
I'm running Windows XP and i have this OS 2000 PLATINUM EDITION boot up program that interferes with and stops my startup asking me to register when i don't really need this program can someone help me eliminate this program from my startup

That said, if anyone absolutely knows what my problem is, and if is addressed elsewhere, please direct me. If not, thank you VERY MUCH in advance for your help!History: 30 GB HD filled up on Fiance's Inspiron 1100. I purchased a compatible 60 GB HD, enclosure, and then I cloned the original HD to the larger one. Then, after restarting the computer with the original drive still in the case, the computer failed to boot. So, after attempting to fix the original boot issue, I physically installed the new, 60 GB HD with the cloned drive on it. The computer fired right up. I was elated. Then I ran defrag. Not a good Idea.Defrag crashed at about 40% complete. I attempted to reboot the computer, to no avail. The computer seems to boot fine, but then gets stuck permanently at the Windows XP loading screen. The loading bar moves, the mouse moves, yada yada. Nothing else. I CAN boot in safe mode, and access all my files (which i DID backup first). However, I want the damn thing to work, considering I just bought the new HD and the computer otherwise worked just fine.I ran CHKDSK from the recovery console, which found errors, but did no good. Then I ran CHKDSK /r, which took about 24 hours to complete. Errors found, some "unrecoverable," to no avail.I cannot access my system startup BIOS w/F2 (or any other key) during startup, no matter how early i start to tap the key. That is strange to me. Thus, I cannot boot from the XP CD.What do you all think my options are? The HD is physically OK, I think. The fact that safemode seems to function pretty flawlessly is a good sign, right?
I have read to use bartPE to correct the registry. I have read to reinstall (?) the BIOS. I am ready to re-format the HD and re-install XP, but I'm not sure how to do this, or if I can do this via DOS or the recovery console, as again, I cannot access the system startup settings to change the boot sequence.Again, at this point, is there a way to fix this? If not, can I sweep off the HD and re-install XP? How might I do that?

I have tried just about every imaginable combination of modifying themes and choosing backgrounds, but still, the only thing I can do is change the color of the desktop. However, when I go to shut down the computer, the image I previously had selected shows briefly.

I couldn;t install the driver from Device Manager and went to the driver file itself. The computer produces a warning that "this file contains Active Content" and the computer won;t let the file open. I'n trying to open it from a folder, not from the website so this isn;t an IE warning, except it kind of is. It looks the same, it brought up the Intel website (I may have had it open) and the yellow security warning appeared. That has options to open it, I think. The software on disc was associated with MusicMatch Jukebox.I had to install MusicMatch software before I could install the Intel player software.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with a Compaq Presario running XP Home. I took the CD player out and cleaned out broken pieces of a CD that was destroyed in it. I got it cleaned out, put back together and now the pc won't boot up. I don't know what went wrong. Cleaning the CD player was quite easy and went back together okay. I hooked all of the wires up the way they were. On the front of this computer, there are two lights. One on the left which is green, and one on the right which is orange. Normally, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on first, then the orange light comes on during the loading process. You can see the boot process on the monitor.
Now, after hooking it back up today, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on, then the orange one comes on and goes back off after a moment. The green light stays on. Nothing at all shows up on the monitor, not even a blinking cursor -- it just stays blank. It stays that way indefinitely nothing. The monitor light is on so it is apparently getting power, but shows nothing. I'm sure the monitor is hooked up correctly; it can only be plugged in one way. While I had everything unhooked and was cleaning the CD player, I plugged the CD player back in for a moment and plugged in the power cord to the pc and pushed the power button. The power came on and allowed me to eject the empty tray. I did this to get the tray out of the way so I could clean beneath it. I tried to turn the power back off with the pc power button after ejecting the tray and it wouldn't seem to shut down.
I have a new Asus P4S800D-X, Pentium 4, 3.0E, two matched 160G, SATA hardrives.
I can not install the OS.
I can not get past the BIOS installation and set up.
When I apptempt to install from the CD I get an error message stating an error reading disk and I am asked to restart.
I have set and reset the jumpers on the CD and CD-RW optical drives.
The BIOS has set the hard drives to RAID 0 configuration.
I am not sure if this is a motherboard, optical drive or disk drive problem.
At Regional and Language Options Text service and Input languages Under Prefrences, Language Bar appear grey and cant press. So how to fix this problem? I prefer just install some program from CD or type some paramater to recover and i don't wanna to buy software.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy computer was working fine w/out locking up. The only problem was that I couldn't figure out why my BIOS clock wasn't working. Finally after spending over $130 on a new XP w/SP3 disc and new hard drive I figured out I only needed the little $5.95 calculator battery. My hard drive was corrupt so I bought an 80gb. I installed brand the new XP o/s w/SP3 and it freezes frequently. I have all the same hardware as I had before. My previous 20gb hard drive had XP but it had been upgraded to SP3 (not bundled on one disc but it worked fine until I tried to reinstall windows big mistake).
I took out my USB PCI, and tried to reinstall but it still locks up. I haven't tried to install without my ethernet pci card but I will try it probably tonight or tomorrow. Not really sure what to do to fix it. I know its probably some conflict but I'm more of a user than a fixer. Also, my computer shows installed RAM 1000mb but my computer says only 383MB are available. I don't understand why. It should be moving much faster.
I have two PCs with XP-Home on one and and W2K-SP4 on the other.I have acquired an old large-scale flat bed plotter that is driven by a specifically written Printer driver for Windows 3.1.Currently I am running this from an old 486-laptop running win3.1 but it is so slow (computer, not the plotter) and no network for file transfer. I tried win3.11 but the printer driver will not run correctly with win3.11 so it is back to win3.1.Is there anyway I can make XP or W2K use the w3.1 printer driver? I tried to install the driver in XP and W2K from the plotter disk but I get "there is no printer information in that location."
