View 6 Replies View RelatedI inherited a great computer that is running SP1a. It has not been used in years but is running great. It has some great programs that cannot be replaced. I've heard SP3 is incompatible with a few programs and don't want to chance losing them. Also, since its an older system, I'd rather update 1 step at a time.
Where can I find service pack 2 being that Microsoft's site only links to SP3 (all SP2 links take you to an SP3 page)? I tried Download.com but only found SP3 and SP1a.

My mum wants to use the word processor now and then but the printer has broken and she would rather not buy another; partly because drivers may be an issue and partly becuase I have unused retail copies of Windows ME and 2000 that a couple of mates donated and can print off at my Dad's house.The issue with 98 is that I want to be using USB sticks when necessary to transfer word documents over to my Dad's computer running XP to print but 98 does not have the necessary drivers and I think it is impossible to get any; from what I understand that what 98 SE was for.

I asked for help in an earlier thread, and got some helpful advice, but now I have a new problem. (I'm not sure I should be starting a new thread on this; but it does seem like a separate issue to me.) About two years ago I had the Geek Squad in to rid my computer of a deeply embedded virus. The techie said something to the effect that he was going to load a newer version of XP, which I welcomed, and thought no more about it. Now, in trying to reinstall or install or whatever it is that I'm going to do, the XP disk comes up with an error message saying that I cannot install an earlier version of XP. I don't have a copy of the newer version the techie installed. My question is: is there a way to override the can't-install-older-version block and reinstall the original XP version I have on a legally-owned disk?

View 2 Replies View RelatedUpon leaving my last company I was given one of the older laptops (too old for anyone to care to use anymore), an IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad. The laptop was purchased with OEM licenses for Windows XP and Office. I have not reinstalled XP on this PC, and although I no longer can connect to my old company's domain, I have been continuing to use the PC by logging on to the domain, as I am not able to log onto the PC in any other way. This is, by the way, annoying for me, because I can access the internet but cannot access my other computers at home since they are not on the "company" domain and so I do not have permission to do so.Now the problem: This laptop is beginning to have some sort of problem, where applications like Firefox just suddenly freeze up and cannot be terminated, not even using Task Manager. I need to hardboot the machine each time as I cannot even shutdown in a normal fashion.
So how is the best way to a) fix this problem and b) get permission to log on to the machine "locally" and not on the company domain? One thing I am thinking about is just re-installing the computer, and I have the Windows XP license info on the label on the bottom of the laptop, and I suppose I can get the office license key using something like ProduKey. It would be nice to avoid having to do this, however, as I do not have the Lenovo CD's and would have to reinstall everything from the net. Any advice on what is best to do? How to find/fix the freezes of software like Yahoo and Firefox? How to get away from the company domain? I as user have admin priviledges to the PC but cannot, for example, touch the antivirus software and that is irritating.
It says xp pro is older than sp2 so installation is not allowed. How do I install it as i would install SP2 on the second copy.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a computer that was given to me to use as a backup. It has two small HDs: C is about 6 Gb and D is about 9 Gb. Win XP Pro is on drive C. It is set up as NTFS. The processor is about 1.5. I do not have the CD and, thus, do not want an illegal copy of XP on this computer. I have legal copies of 95, 98SE and an ME upgrade. I would like to reformat the HD to Fat32 and put on one of these older OS. However, when I try to FDISK it will not allow me to reformat the disk, apparently because it is NTFS. It has only the one partition.

View 11 Replies View Relatedi went on the windows update website, i guess launched a new update software , so i waited for it to install , then it gave the choice between cutom updates or express , so i clicked on one of them.there is a bar that comes up with green squares going thru it , and that just keeps on going forever, when i try to stop it, it would freeze the whole computer and i'll have to restart. i know it's nothing to do with the security setting in our netwrok here, because i can get windows updates on other computers on the LAN. can this be a spyware problem if so, how can i resolve. i never encountered a problem like this before.
View 4 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I was browsing the internet (wink), and randomly my desktop background changed to an image of a fake virus alert. Also, many security-related sites were blocked, and clicking on any google results redirected me to various advertising sites. Only a couple weeks prior I had this same virus, which I believe to be Smitfraud, and resolved it by running the MalwareBytes program. When I tried to do this this time, however, the program froze immediately upon starting the scan.An additional symptom I had was when I would start up Windows, If I started up in safe mode I would get the same problem, only the problematic file would be services.exe. Also I had no taskbar in safe mode. The only attempt at fixing this I really made was downloading and running SmitFraudFix.exe, but all that seemed to do was delete my Firefox bookmarks which I promptly restored.
At any rate, I could not solve this problem, so I repaired(not reinstalled) windows. Upon completing repair I ran a windows update like any sane person would, but it was unable to connect. I downloaded the manual SP3 installer and ran it, but got an access denied error. I ran AdAware & MalwareBytes successfully(both were still fully updated definitions) and they removed stuff, and I was able to connect to Windows Update, but after attempting to download the WindowsUpdate file(not the actual windows updates, but the updated WindowsUpdate if you catch my drift) I got an "Access is Denied" error, with error code 0x80070005. I repaired windows again, but the same exact pattern happened.
I have been using this PC without any problem for 6 months. I wanted to reinstall my Windows XP on my PC and tried to booting up with a bootable Windows XP_SP2 Prof CD(first boot is CD ROM). But to my surprise, the setup process in not taking place. I am getting a grey blank screen(instead of windows setup screen) after this message "Setup is inspecting your Computer's Hardware configuration".This is the case only with the Windows XP bootable CD. I have tried to boot with different WinXP CDs, but of no use. However, I am able to boot with Win 98, Win 2000 and even with Win 2003 via boot CDs.I am suspecting whether there is any problem with the motherboard, as I was able to install Windows XP Pro before on the same PC.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI need to restore my computer to an earlier date, but when i tried to find the system restore, it was not there. First i went to start, all programs, accessories, and system tools. When i saw that it was not there, i entered the run command for it. When i did that, i got the same message you would get if you enter an invalid command. After that didn't work, i entered "msconfig" in the run box, and then once the system configuration utility appeared, i went to the tools tab and highlighted System Restore, and clicked Launch. But then a window popped up saying the following: "The system cannot find the file specified".
I am about 75-85% sure that the rstrui.exe file was deleted by one of the young ones fiddling around inside the system folders. What i do not know is how to get it back. I remember one time when the windows sound recorder executable file had gotten deleted, i just downloaded it from the internet, put it in the right spot and it was fixed. I can't seem to do that with the system restore executable file. Any ideas on how i can fix this?

But here recently my harddrive crashed when trying to do something (still using that harddrive), when I tried to use the system restore feature from HP,it wouldn't let me, so I had to get a WindowsXP disc from someone. Using their copy of windows won't let me update windows or anything, so I decided I would just system restore using HP's system restore. I had to do a clean reinstall of my operating system on xp pro.Now I've right clicked on my printer on xp home entered the printers name as printer 1. When I go to my other computer and run the wizard I get a box come up saying printer and underneath a larger box.What have I got to put in the printer box my printer is a Lexmark X1100 Series.In the lower box this is where I have had printer names appearing in the past although mine was'ent there I am now getting 'Microsoft windows network' coming up.When i click on the next button I get 'you need to specify a valid printer name.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI just did clean install of XP on my new Dell D630 notebook and have a problem.I've done plenty of clean installs before and never run into these problems.I checked the Device Manager after installing my drivers/windows updates. For some reason,I'm showing 2 ACPI Batteries,2 965 Chipsets,3 plug and play monitors, 2 Core Duo processors, and several system boards... all I can think of is that there may be newer drivers I need to download (I used the drivers/ utilities disk). I actually had 2 copies of Windows XP showing up when I booted, but one was not actually present, so I deleted it from the boot.ini file, which did nothing.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an external hard drive that I have assigned it a permanent hard drive letter reference through Disk Management. I have set the System Restore tab in My Computer Properties tab to not moniter this external hard drive K. Problem is that every now and then when I plug in every now and then for backing up my files via Briefcase - this will activate the System Restore function on that hard drive. This usually happens when I have the hard drive plugged in when I either turn off or turn on my computer. I stopped having the hard drive plugged in to hopefully stop the stop the System Restore on that hard drive (and then re-checked the System Restore tab)
View 12 Replies View RelatedI got that HP pavilion 503x that needs a fresh install of windows. it was running on xp home edition and i want to go with xp pro.my problem is that when i put in my xp pro cd (that i have used several times on other pcs) it reads it but doesnt boot it and goes directly to HP reinsatallation system for PC. I have like 8 cds for HP xp home installation. when i put in the disc 1, it reads it and boots it normally but the cds appears to be corrupted and at somee point the installation will crash. i havee tried copying the cd on a clean one but it doesnt see whats on it, it doesnt read it and keep ejecting the cd out. im confused, its the first time its happen, and i dont get it.
my winxp cd works perfectly fine on my other computer.its like the computer wont read anything but the HP cds.

Then I did a Acronis recovery from a uniprocessor pc, and installed the correct mobo drivers. Still no issues. The I did a restart and a repair install to load the mobo sata and AHCI drivers. The pc restarts, but everytime I open a program from windows, for example Windows Explorer, or Software from the configuration screen, or Network Connections, I get a window with "Windows Installer", waiting for something to load. The version of windows on my old pc is sp3, after the repair install (I used a win xp slipstreamed with sp2), I see sp2 on my info screen of computer properties.
