I want to change my desktop background, but when I go to OPTIONS, the images available are grayed out.? It it totally frozen. I cannot even put a theme in, the icons show up, but nothing else.I used to be able to change my background at will, putting photos I had taken up, but now when I go to those options, the only thing I can do is change the background color as the images (including the BROWSE button) are grayed out. I have tried just about every imaginable combination of modifying themes and choosing backgrounds, but still, the only thing I can do is change the color of the desktop. However, when I go to shut down the computer, the image I previously had selected shows briefly.
Can folders have background images like the desktop can?I'm trying to organize some folders to be like the desktop. Anyone know if it's possible?I have Windows XP pro SP2
My daughter recently saved an interactive desktop of Harry Potter to our pc, we think. Suddenly after saving, the pc automatically changed web fonts, colors, placement of text boxes and some settings. We uninstalled but found the colors and backgrounds of all web pages to be white. Myspace pages allows everything, but no background pics or colors. We installed internet explorer 7 and that fixed the font sizes but not the colors. ANyone know any tricks to try before we backup and reintall windows?
I have setup my three printers for internet shraring, when i goto http://doamin/printers > click on the printer > connect > it asks for username and password, i give, and it gives some error saying i am not allowed to use printer.
i moved some picture files onto sister's desktop from my computer so that i could print them out. normally i would just print them but our network has been having problems and i was cut off from the printer but not her computer. i figured i would delete the folder. most of the files deleted but a handful will not allow me to delet them.
is it a virus, a worm, do i have adware or spyware that is not being detected on this machine? (i have run spybot and adaware twice after making sure i had them updated).

I recently updated my laptop to Windows Vista, but it came with Windows XP. I'm not exactly sure of Microsoft's licensing rules, but can I take the XP Key and apply that to my other computer since the XP key is no longer in use, or am I somehow braking the rules?
XPpro/SP2/IE7 I have a DVD r/w drive and a CD r/w drive At present the Send To function only identifies DVD r/w Drive (E I want to add CD r/w Drive (F
1. Went to the "Send To" folder, opened browser, selected CD r/w Drive (F and it came up with just F:/ 2. Tried to rename it as as CD r/w (F but ":" is not allowed so called it CD Drive (F) 3. Then tried sending a file to to this new shortcut and it came up with "this is a read only CD" (which is not true as I can load normally from the DVD drive) 4. On further investigation it is suggested that the following registry keys (2) be changed from 1 to 2.
HKEY_CURRENT USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrent VersionExplorerCD burningDrivesDrive Type But this did not change anything: I still cannot get the Sent To CD to work properly.
windows cannot access the specified divice, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.I stopped by a friend's house to service his infected Dell Laptop. Now I can't even access the system information - this is all I know.I installed AVG immediately upon installation it showed me three virus. I clicked on heal and quarantine as needed. Now the computer won't allow me to start any programs besides internet explorer and other silly, useless programs.
I have an old Intel mp3 player. Intel's website stopped supporting it a long time ago but they do still suppply the XP driver. I couldn;t install the driver from Device Manager and went to the driver file itself. The computer produces a warning that "this file contains Active Content" and the computer won;t let the file open. I'n trying to open it from a folder, not from the website so this isn;t an IE warning, except it kind of is. It looks the same, it brought up the Intel website (I may have had it open) and the yellow security warning appeared. That has options to open it, I think. The software on disc was associated with MusicMatch Jukebox.I had to install MusicMatch software before I could install the Intel player software.
I booted my computer the other day and got this message: THE SYSTEM HAS REACHED THE MAXIMUM SIZE ALLOWED FOR THE SYSTEM PART OF THE REGISTRY. ADDITIONAL STORAGE REQUESTS WILL BE IGNORED. Then when I tried to do anything on my desktop, nothing responded. So I re-booted and there was no error message this time, and everything worked fine. BUT...every other time I start up my computer, I get the same message -- and when I re-boot, then the message is gone and my computer works fine.
I am having problem downloading MSNews groups. I am running XP sp2,Outlook express 6 with AOL as my ISP.When I try to download from the news reader I get 2 error messages 1. You are not allowed to view or 2. was unexpectedly terminated by the server. Everytthing was working ok untill I downloaded Internet 7 and I have now reverted to Internet Explorer butI cannot get any now.
I have a problem with a Compaq Presario running XP Home. I took the CD player out and cleaned out broken pieces of a CD that was destroyed in it. I got it cleaned out, put back together and now the pc won't boot up. I don't know what went wrong. Cleaning the CD player was quite easy and went back together okay. I hooked all of the wires up the way they were. On the front of this computer, there are two lights. One on the left which is green, and one on the right which is orange. Normally, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on first, then the orange light comes on during the loading process. You can see the boot process on the monitor.
Now, after hooking it back up today, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on, then the orange one comes on and goes back off after a moment. The green light stays on. Nothing at all shows up on the monitor, not even a blinking cursor -- it just stays blank. It stays that way indefinitely nothing. The monitor light is on so it is apparently getting power, but shows nothing. I'm sure the monitor is hooked up correctly; it can only be plugged in one way. While I had everything unhooked and was cleaning the CD player, I plugged the CD player back in for a moment and plugged in the power cord to the pc and pushed the power button. The power came on and allowed me to eject the empty tray. I did this to get the tray out of the way so I could clean beneath it. I tried to turn the power back off with the pc power button after ejecting the tray and it wouldn't seem to shut down.
I recently installed Microsoft Office 2007 and it was working fine for a week, now i get this message when i try to use Microsoft Word saying "This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked" And when I try to uninstall the whole program it says that 'setup can not continue because a file is missing or corrupt'
I had a bad HDD failure which corrupted part of my WinXP OS with the result that I am unable to boot into Windows. I have reloaded Windows on another HDD and I will be able to recover most of my data from backups. However, there is still some recent data on the bad disk which I am frantic to recover. I am able to find the "Documents and Settings" folder where I believe the "Outlook Express" data is held
I am unable to get into the folder as my username on the computer was passworded (the password is known). Neither am I allowed to copy the folder to my new drive. I cannot access the folder from my new OS even when I password myself with the same username / password. I have attempted to repair the bad drive's copy of Windows but that wasn't successful. I don't want to replace the bad copy with a fresh as this would reformat the drive taking with it the folder I want (and can't copy). Any work on the folder would need to be on the bad drive, it seems. I have run out of ideas.
I'm running a server and i was wondering if/how i can run it as a background process, the console screen is really annoying when minimised to the taskbar.
I am running outlook express in Windows XP SP2. Quite frequently images in emails are replaced by a large box with a small red x in the upper left corner. I have unchecked the appropriate box in the security tab under Options' in the 'Tools' pull down menue of Outlook Express. I still can not get certain images. It would seem that most often this problem occuts in email that has been forwarded to me.
I'd like to know if it's possible to use my own images as a BG for certain folders. For instance, I've made a 'Games' folder, which is where I put shortcuts to games, and would like to use my own image as the BG for that folder. Is it possible? Is there a way to do this?
Had to re-install XP2 Pro and Outlook Express 6. Need to figure out why I can't forward emails that contain images, such as jpegs. I receive the email with the jpeg in the message fine but when I forward the email the jpegs only show as the empty box with the "x" in top left corner. Before re-installing Xp and Office and OE6 I was able to do this. Is there a setting or configuration that I missed. I have set in OE6 Mail Sending Format to HTML with Send Pictures with Messages and Encoding Text as Quoted Printable. I'm using Yahoo as my mail server.
If when you have installed XP along with all drivers, office and updates you make a back up image like ghost, of your system at that point, can this be used as a permanent reinstall if you were unlucky anouth to get hit by a virus or have a corrupted OS, or is it a stop gap until you can reformat and reinstall with a xp disc, and what happens to the data you back up over.
I have inspiron 9200 with win xp home SP2.Some of the images and some flash and java applications dont run or open in my browser (Internet explorer or firefox i have tried both but nothing works. For example the main yahoo logo at the top of yahoo.com does not open in my browser.
I want to perform a clean install on a older dell poweredge running Win 2000 server that i aquired a while back. What i would like to do is create a Acronis True Image of the current install and throw it on an external HD. (i want to keep the current install usable for a few weeks) Then wipe the disk and do a clean install of the OS and start fresh till i get everything running the way i like it. And also create a image of this new install and throw it on the external HD as well.
But during this span of a few weeks i would need to restore to the original install and go back to the fresh install quite a few times probalby....err toggle between the original and new install until all is well. (carry on with the fresh install when no one is in the office, when done for the night restore back to original install untill the next night i can continue with my work and toggle to the new install again and again and again.
I have a problem with viewing images on some websites.I have a Dell Dimension 4600 Series computer, I use Windows XP, IE browser, and I have Norton Systemworks premier 2005 Antivirus program on my computer. I also have spywareblaster from javacool site and a popup blocker. The main type of websites I have trouble viewing are websites with e-cards. I can view the e-cards but when I click on them to view to send..I get the tiny box with the red x in it.One in particular is the Hallmark.com site..I only get a blank background with the box & red x on the main page. If I go down to the e-cards and click on it.I can see the e-cards but again, when I click on one to send, nothing but the blank with the box & red x.Also I have tried to download the Macromedia Flash Player. I click on the download box, the next page that comes up, there is nothing to click on, only a box with the red x. That is as far as I can get.
why when I go to pull up a tech article or some such document that has images as part of the article, the images only show as a box with an "X"? The images tend to support the explanation of the text, but they aren't there. Is there a box within Windows Explorer or something in my Zone Alarm that I have to set in order to get these to show properly?
I have a Dell computer running Windows XP. I've noticed that certain websites are not displaying properly; graphics are missing from some pages (not all graphics, just one or two). For example, the banner at the top of nytimes.com will not show. There doesn't seem to be an order to the missing graphics; it seems to be randomly blocking certain graphics, both jpg and gif. If I visit a new site, I do not know if I'm seeing all there is to see
My question is why is it when I save a photo in my pictures that is shows up in my desktop images? Start-Control panel-App and themes-Display-click desktop tab.All the images on my computer show up in this box.Why does it do this as I have a bunch in there and would like to remove many of them or stop them from collecting there.
My HD crapped out on me so I bought a new one. My brother gave me a copy of Windows Black for my new OS, so I installed it. Everything was running smooth, (installing drivers, hardware and such) until I DL'ed Steam. I noticed a weird box on my screen. I'd scroll up or down and it would multiply. "Oh great" I thought. Un-installed Steam then re-installed my video card. Back to normal. Re-installed steam, same problem. GRRRRR.Finally gave up on Steam and just started browsing for other software to get. Out of nowhere the boxes show up again, so I know it's not a Steam problem. Maybe a video card problem? Maybe a Windows Black bug? I have no idea, but this is what I see on my desktop.
Just to start off with, I searched the forums and came up with this thread which seemed related to my problem but didn't solve it:Just finished moving and unloaded my computer yesterday. Everything is running fine but for some reason Firefox doesn't want to load a lot of images from different web pages So far I've noticed it specifically on IMDB.com and Fotki.com.It has also happened on some other random pages but I can't think of them offhand. If I open the exact same page in IE it loads almost instantly. Like I mentioned earlier, I followed the advice in a different thread an cleared the cache and history to no avail. Using Firefox 1.0.6 and XP SP2.
