Just recently, Windows Defender has been displaying an Exclamation Point over it's icon in the system tray. I looked into it and it seems that it wants new definition files.I tried updating the definitions but for some reason it just acts like its trying to update but never does.I'm thinking this may have some thing to do with Windows Genuine Disadvantage.
View 11 RepliesI have a Plug and Play Software Enumerator failures. (XP SP2)I get an error 31 which says that it can't load the driver properly. However, the driver files (swenum.sys streamci.dll) are good as I got them from a functioning XP SP2 system. Also, when I enable bootlogging it says that it successfully loads swenum.sys.
However, in Device Manager, I get the exclamation point and error 31.
I have no idea what to do. I went into my cpsystemdevice manager and there's an exclamation point C-Media AC97 Audio Device. I double clicked on it and tried to retrieve it from my winxp cd but it doesn't work.

Although the connections work as ever, including normal internet connection, the Local Area Connection icon in the System Tray now has the "warning" symbol with exclamation point. I can find nothing wrong with the connection behavior, but I'd rather not have the "warning" showing. What can I check or do in order to get rid of it?

Tried Realtek audio and HD audio, tried Intel, didn't work. Tried NVidia, as it has an NVidia motherboard. Spent too much time on this computer. Can anyone lend a hand? I know it's got something to do with Audio, as there's no audio device detected in Sounds, under Control Panel.Customer has to have computer today.

The Photoshop icon is displayed in the Folder Options as it should be, and the files do open in Photoshop, but if I go to File > Open in Photoshop, all of these files have the Netscape icon. How do I make it so the Photoshop icon is displayed for these?

View 4 Replies View RelatedIm haveing multiple problems with my laptop and its pretty bad.First of all the wireless conection breaks all the time and it says that Wireless zero configuration utility needs to be restarted. So i have to go to Run; %SystemRoot%/system32/services.msc s and restart it. But it just goes out again after a few hours.Windows Firewall will not open. It says; "Windows firewall setting cannot be displayed becasue the associated service is not running." I click ok and it says" Windows cannot start the widows firewall/Internet connection sharing (ICS) service.Windows defender cannot update. It says its trying but then fails and it dosnt display the problem long enough to write it down here. My sound is no longer working. Im about to just give up and reformat and re instal everything. Unless anyone thinks i have a hardware problem

Since I uploaded the update of Windows Defender my options on my PC have changed.I can no longer type any particular letters using my keybord without a window popping up. Here are the following keys which causes me problems: E = Opens up My Computer R= RUN U= Utilility Manager D= Desktop F= Search Results L= Login Window M= Desktop I cannot type in Google, Firefox address bar. If I press one of these keys while I'm on my Desktop these actions occur too.

Went to Microsoft download page and clicked on full file version (SINCE I don't have the CD), but still get the request to insert the CD halfway through the installation. Since I can't complete the download, the update icon pops up every time I log on. Any suggestions?
Computer runs on Windows XP Home SP2. Since the last two or three monthly Window updates, that yellow shield icon - the Windows Update icon - no longer shows up in the system tray. I tried to locate it under "previous elements" (I'm translating from German since my computer language is in German), but it's not there. I only know when Window updates have been downloaded when I want to shut down the computer and I have the option to either first install the updates, after which the computer will shut down automatically, or shut down the computer without installing the updates.

When I go to the device manager and expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers, each of the Intel(R) 8280 1EB VBB Universal Host Controller has a yellow exclamation mark beside them. When I check their status this is the message: Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19). I was not in the registry prior to this, so I don't know how it got damaged
I tried this: Click Uninstall, and then click Scan for hardware changes to load a usable driver ? no effect.
I tried this: Restart the computer in Safe Mode, and then select Last Known Good Configuration,which rolls back to the most recent successful registry configuration ? didn't fix the problem. Microsoft says that as a last resort, you can edit the registry directly ? but I not sure where and what to edit in the registry. If anyone can tell me what keys to edit in the registry I would very appreciative. I will do anything to avoid reinstall windows from scratch. I unfortuately didn't have system restore going so I cannot use that.
i am trying to delete the temp files in the windows/temp directory but they won't delete. It says a program is using them but even when i try and get rid of them in safe mode they won't delete, how can i get rid of them? Also when i try to run a panda online virus scan i click on the scan my computer icon and it does nothing but there is a little yellow exclamation mark on the bottom left of the window, is that why it isn't doing anything and if so, how can i fix it?

They appear in Device Manager under DVD/CD-ROM drives with a yellow shreik/exclamation mark preceding the listing The devices are also recognized in the BIOS setup. When I click on the device in Device Manager, I get the message"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)". One of the devices previously worked correctly. In fact, I completed a clean install of XP using it. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Windows XP SP2. Somehow Ultimate defender has claimed my system.I have scanned it housecall and stinger and regular micro trend full scan. They have not removed it. I then used combofix, it seemed to help, but I don't think it's all the way off. I see explorer.exe goes to 99% in the tak manager. When I bring up a ie browser, it tries to go to the ultimate defender page. I looked in the registry, I don't see any "ultimate" settings.Here is a hijackthis report after the combofix run.

The Virus protection part of the program expired in just a few months and I don't want to pay more to have a new key, I paid enough already. I was trying to install Norton and it says it cannot install because Defender Pro is there. I tried to uninstall through add and remove.I tried the uninstall that came with Defender Pro, and tried to go into program files and delete the folder myself. It will not uninstall because it is still running. I have exited everything I know how to exit.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently installed windows defender beta2 on my computer. When I ran it, it showed that I had a medium risk possible hijacker on my computer. I clicked to repair the issue and that's when all hell broke loose. I have lost everything on my computer. I restarted my computer and all I get is my desktop background minus the task bar, start menu and desktop icons. I also lost Internet Explorer. I can can bring up the task manager screen and use that to browse my folders. All of my folders are listed but most of them are empty. I am able to get online but since internet explorer folder is wiped out, I cannot surf the interent. I just get a screen showing that I need to install Internet explorer. I can receive my Juno e-mail account. When I go into DOS and type in tree, it does list all my folders and the items that these folders are suppose to include. This leads me to believe that my data is all in my computer smewhere but I cannot get access to it. I have tried to start the computer in safe mode but it won't allow me to do so. THe screen just flashes on and off.
