Local Area Connection Icon Exclamation
Dec 12, 2009
I recently re-installed XP in my old notebook. Although the connections work as ever, including normal internet connection, the Local Area Connection icon in the System Tray now has the "warning" symbol with exclamation point. I can find nothing wrong with the connection behavior, but I'd rather not have the "warning" showing. What can I check or do in order to get rid of it?

I have tired to get rid of this bridge connection that is on my local area connection. I try to remove it with the bridge connection area and all it says is "To create a Network Bridge, you must select at least two LAN or High-Speed Internet connections that are not being used by Internet Connection Sharing." I have AT&T hig speed internet and tired talking to them and they said it was on my end, plus I spend two hours on the phone to someone who doesn't know much english and not alot about computers. So can someone please help me. The only way I can connect to the internet is through the my D-Link router which sucks

My computer crashed. I bought a new Western Digital Caviar SE 160 GB hard drive. I installed my Microsoft Windows Home Edition 2002 cd onto the new drive but I cannot get a "local area connection" to install. When I "add a new connection" it installs a LAN 1384 connection. I tried looking on the cd to install it but could find nothing. How can I get the LAC installed from the cd or from a website that I can download from work onto my jumpdrive?

I have been referred to MSN as a source of help for this problem. Although I am an AOL subscriber, I access MSN Messenger, and the MSN Gaming Zone daily. My PC uses Windows XP, and for the past few days I have have been booted from both MSN areas, after a short time of usage. Then I am also booted from AOL. Upon sign on, a warning comes up saying that I have limited or no connectivity to my local area connection. I was told by AOL NOT to disable this, as it may also disable my connection to AOL.

Basic Specs. Dell 4400 computer, Com21 cable modem connection. Location- At my home, one computer, one connection Why is it that i can no longer bring up any web page until after i perform the "repair" function to my local area connection??? When i do the repair function i get a message that the repair was not completed due to a problem repairing the "ARP Cache". But even though the message says it was not able to fix the ARP Cache, i am able to connect and bring up a web page. the exact wording is: "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed. Clearing the ARP Cache"
I am not entirely sure if the ARP Cache is the problem or just a result of some other root cause. This problem occurs just after a reboot or if the the computer has been sitting idle for an hour or so. After a reboot, my local area connection says it is connected, and even shows traffic, both directions at a speed of 10 mbps for a short periods of time, then the traffic seems to stop. It's like something is loading up right near the end of the boot process that is stopping the communication. I have run 3 different virus scanners, spybot, adaware, cwshredder, tweaknow regcleaner, all with no results as far as finding viruses, malware or any other devious problems. i have also performed a "netsh int ip reset" function, as well as system registry "winsock" deletion and re-installation procedure, both, per Microsoft's instructions. Both netted me zero help, still have the same problem. I have even deleted and reinstalled my i/o card driver, to no avail. I have also used the restore function for windows settings, restoring to a point back in November, when all was well. No help there either. I have gone to "windows task manager" and looked at all the running tasks and found no tasks that do not belong. I have un-installed certain programs that auto load during the boot process that i thought could be causing the problem, such as adaware se plus, my virus scanner, spybot search and destroy.

need some advice on how to get my local area connection work. I have a HP Compaq Presario 2100 laptop, model # 2104US. I am currently experienced some problem with my laptop (suspected some virus). Any way, I think I got rid of it and reinstalled all of my software and hard drive back. The weird thing is I got wireless network connection going but the only thing I couldn't get it works is the Local Area Connection. I got this message " A net work cable is unplugged". I am a computer Illiterate so I have no idea how to make it works. I couldnt remember how I get connected before when I first got my labtop, but one thing I was sure that I have no problem of getting connection in school or other public places that I've been before I reinstall my labtop.

My internet connection is working fine. I have the checkbox for don't display whether connection is connected or having problems. But something weird is going on. After I come back to the computer after a while, there are multiple local area connection icons in the systray indicating that there is a cable unplugged. But my internet is working and I can't find any other local connections in network places. The other weird thing happening with those little icons in the systray is that when I try to hover over them with the mouse to right click on them to see where they are coming from, they vanish as soon as I hover over them. There will be a row from 2 - 6 of them, they al vanish as I hover across the lot of them.

I'm sure this is an old issue for some but it's new to me because I downloaded Service Pact 2 this weekend. I'm now noticing that sometimes when my computer comes out of stand by the local area connection symbol is disabled and I can't get it to enable. I've even gone into My Computer/ Network Connections/ Local Area Connection Properties window and tried to enable it but that won't work. I also tried to troubleshoot it, but that hung up, not even ctrl alt delete would shut it down so I pulled the plug. Can anyone tell me what's going on? I don't think it's a coincidence that it started after I got SP 2. I'm tempted to try and unistall it, but I've already seen some posts on the forum about possible negative consequences.

Just recently, Windows Defender has been displaying an Exclamation Point over it's icon in the system tray. I looked into it and it seems that it wants new definition files.I tried updating the definitions but for some reason it just acts like its trying to update but never does.I'm thinking this may have some thing to do with Windows Genuine Disadvantage.

On a friend's computer, they have broadband with Comcast. It seems that once every few hours (maybe after every restart? Not sure really...) they can't connect to the internet. I've found that going into Network connections, and clicking "Create a New Connection" on the left-hand menu and going through setting up a broadband connection manually seems to fix it- for a while.

But if I take the tick out and click apply and the put the tick back in and click apply, it reappears. However the next time I start my computer, it has disappeared again.
