Getting Exclamation Point On C-media Audio Device?
Aug 15, 2007
I have no idea what to do. I went into my cpsystemdevice manager and there's an exclamation point C-Media AC97 Audio Device. I double clicked on it and tried to retrieve it from my winxp cd but it doesn't work.

Running Windows XP on Emachines ET1161-07. Installed all drivers that I could find, since EMachines does not represent XP. Tried Realtek audio and HD audio, tried Intel, didn't work. Tried NVidia, as it has an NVidia motherboard. Spent too much time on this computer. Can anyone lend a hand? I know it's got something to do with Audio, as there's no audio device detected in Sounds, under Control Panel.Customer has to have computer today.

I have a Plug and Play Software Enumerator failures. (XP SP2)I get an error 31 which says that it can't load the driver properly. However, the driver files (swenum.sys streamci.dll) are good as I got them from a functioning XP SP2 system. Also, when I enable bootlogging it says that it successfully loads swenum.sys.
However, in Device Manager, I get the exclamation point and error 31.

Just recently, Windows Defender has been displaying an Exclamation Point over it's icon in the system tray. I looked into it and it seems that it wants new definition files.I tried updating the definitions but for some reason it just acts like its trying to update but never does.I'm thinking this may have some thing to do with Windows Genuine Disadvantage.

I have two DVD drives connected to an XP desktop computer, however, they do not work. They appear in Device Manager under DVD/CD-ROM drives with a yellow shreik/exclamation mark preceding the listing The devices are also recognized in the BIOS setup. When I click on the device in Device Manager, I get the message"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)". One of the devices previously worked correctly. In fact, I completed a clean install of XP using it. Just what does the error message mean Does it mean that the devices are faulty & need to be replaced

I had some trouble last night and today with getting rid of a virus. Now that it is gone, I am having sound problems (maybe related, maybe not). This morning, when I opened iTunes I got a message that there was no audio device detected. After trying several things, I rebooted. Magically, I could play music again. However, a short while later, I again got an error message telling me that there is no audio device found, even though it shows up in Device Manager as working properly. The problem goes away for a short time after I reboot, but returns. It is Realtek AC 97. Why won't my computer keep recognizing it? (It tried going to Realtek's site to download an update. It has updates for Windows 98, 95, etc., but not for XP. Or at least I couldn't find it.)

When I play a DVD or MP3 with Windows Media Player 11 (WinXPproSP2) the movie plays but there is no sound. There is audio if I use WinDVD or Real Player so it is not a hardware problem.

I'm running win XP SP2 and using media player 11. Every couple days I completely loose sound when playing mp3 or movie formats, although system sounds are working and on device manager my audio devices are working properly. So far I have solved this problem by continuously re-installing my audio driver. Can you help me with a more "permanent" solution?I would also like to understand if at all possible what is causing it.

Iam having touble burning audio files from my windows media player. it begins to burn and then I get a bubble from my task bar that warns about low disk space. The burning only goes for anywhere from one to five songs worth then stops. When I click on those that didn't burn I get a window that reads, "Windows Media Player cannot burn the files because there is not enough free disk space to store the temporary files. Delete some unneeded files on your hard disk and then try again".

Any audio that I play skips at regular intervals. It doesn't matter if it's an mp3, cd, avi file or even the windows startup tune. Video files skip in conjunction. It doesn't matter what media player I use, I get the same result.

I haven't installed anything new on my computer but today after having my computer shipped to me via UPS I cut on my computer and where the XP load bar screen was I got: "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device".Seeing this I knew I went into the BIOS setup and tried to turn the system priority to look at the HDD. Instead I only had the option of the DVD drive and the CD drive.I have no idea how to solve this problem and don't have any of the recovery CD's. I DO NOT WANT TO REFORMAT because like a bad little boy I did not backup my 4 years worth of work.

the audio on my computer has recently stopped. I am running an AMD 64 3000 with WINXP SP3, and have an Asus A8N-E MB using onboard audio. I have tried re-installing the nvidia nforce audio drivers, but they still do not appear in the device manager. Under sound, video, and game controllers in device manager, I have:
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Logitech Microphone
Media Control Devices
MPU-410 Compatible MIDI Device
Standard Game Port
Video Codecs
In control panel under sounds and audio devices, it says I have no audio device, and that there are no playback devices. When I try to play a song in RealPlayer, it says "cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it." Could an overheated chipset cause only the sound to malfunction? My chipset fan recently failed and I was running without it for a little while.

I am using a Sony Vaio Model PCG- 7X2L and it won't play any sounds. There is no volume control on the task bar, so I went to Sounds and Audio Devices and it says there is no audio device. When lookng at the Device Manager, this is what is listed under Sound, video, and game controllers:
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs
I don't see anything that says Realtek, SoundMax, or any other similar devices. What do I need to download in order to have sound play on my laptop?

After going through many trials, tribulations, and attempts to fix my computer, i was left with only one option, to fully restore it back to factory settings. i thought this would cleanse all of my problems. now i have no sound. i have tried running services.msc and windows audio is correctly enabled. it is likely to be a missing sound driver, but i have no clue how to determine where i can get this said driver. i think it is important to note that it appears that none of my usb ports in the front or back of my computer are active.

I have a USB to SPDIF converter that is supposed to support 5.1 surround. I can hear stereo sound, but not 5.1 surround. I know there are many free tools that enable passthrough on spdif so the receiver does the dedcoding instead of the PC. However windows XP doesn't see the USB audio device as SPDIF is there a way to configure the USB audio device as SPDIF without drivers?

I am still having a recurring problem with my Realtek Audio Device. This is not a new installation and no other new hardware has been installed on the computer (Win Xp Home, SP2). No conflicts are shown. I fear that some files may have become corrupted but this is one behaviour which constantly recurs - maybe someone has a fix or knows what files I need to replace. When I start up the computer, there is no volume icon, no sound and device manager shows the audio device as unable to start, code 10. All the codecs etc other things under sounds are OK.If I choose to uninstall it, then run add hardware wizard, it will reinstall it no problems and the sound comes back. But next boot up it's gone again. In case of not having read previous post, I suspect some corruption occurred when I had to cold shutdown my computer.
I obviously have the correct drivers on the computer & can load them through hardware wizard - I just don't know why they don't stick on shutdown - it's as if the function which registers the entry in the register is corrupt - I know there are certain files which can be installed or uninstalled from the registry in order to start or stop a service.is it something like this I need to do?

I installed all the Windows updates and loaded the drivers off the utility disk that came with the motherboard. I also got the updates from the GIGABYTE website. The utility app shows all drivers are installed correctly. It took me a couple of days to get audio to work because the initial driver load got corrupted somehow and it wouldn't let me reinstall until I deleted the driver's entry in the registry. After that I was prompted for the driver again and it installed fine and sound finally started working. Everything appears to be working and there is only the one Unknown driver in my Device Properties and it's really irking me. All my drivers were installed correctly in my previous installation

I recently found an old Gateway desktop in my basement. It is from a few years back, but I figured I'd do a clean install of Windows XP on it and run it in an extra room.I copied the drivers over using a program called DriverMax, and it seemed to work successfully. I had the internet right away and everything else I tried worked. The only problem I am having is that there is no sound. It also says there is no audio device found. Device Manager says I have the most up to date Legacy Audio Drivers, but I am still having this problem. Is there another driver that I might need in order for my computer to recognize an audio device.

I don't have sound and haven't for the past few days and then this morning a Found New Hardware Wizard keeps popping up trying to install software for an Unknown Device on High Definition Audio Bus.In the Device Manager, there are yellow question marks near Other Devices and then below it, in sub categories is a list of at least 20 (!) Unknown Device on High Definition Audio Bus.In the Audio Device section, there are NO Playback Devices, NO Recording Devices, No Midi Playback and the same in the Voice section. Usually I have Realtek listed there.
