View 4 RepliesI have a volume control icon at my system tray...then, all of the sudden, the icon shows a "mute" status...i tried to unmute it by double-clicking the icon to access the volume control...nothing happened...i went to Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices...also, nothing happened...i thought that this applet (mmsys.cpl) in C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32 was corrupted, so i tried to run it from other folder containing that file but still, nothing happened...at this point, i don't think that all 3 files were corrupted...the only way to control the volume , and to mute/unmute is by using the Creative Surround Mixer (i have an Audigy sound card),which work flawlessly...The wierd part is, even i unmute from here, the volume icon at the system tray still shown as 'mute'..but i can still hear all the sounds and songs...Then, I've discovered that in AudioHQ (also from Creative software), under the View>Multimedia Propertis, I CAN actually access the 'Sound and Audio Devices' applet...this will open the 'Audio' tab...other tabs like 'Sound', 'Voice' and 'Hardware' is also accessible from here, BUT, when opening the 'Volume' tab, it hangs...i could't access this applet any longer...the only way to close it is to end the process (rundll32.exe) in the task manager.That's why i conclude that the volume tab in the applet is problematic.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a windowsxp operating system.Last week I noticed the volume icon missing in the system Tray as well as all other icons.The only one left is Norton icon.When I open the task bar and go into customize notifications all the icons are either folders or icons.Example volume has the picture of a folder.Norton has a lexmark icon.Lexmark has a folder icon.Real message center has a volume icon.I have been trying all week to remedy this problem.Ran Norton and Adware.Nothing.Has anyone in the forum run into this problem before and if so how did you fix it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedIn the last few months my volume icon does not load in the system tray most of the time on boot up.I have it selected to show in the task bar properties and the control panel. For the life of me I can't figure out how to get this icon back. I have to bring up the Master Volume Panel to change volume settings. This is a real pain most of the time, as all I want to do is stop a web site from playing some anoying music or turn the volume back on when I need it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had some trouble last night and today with getting rid of a virus. Now that it is gone, I am having sound problems (maybe related, maybe not). This morning, when I opened iTunes I got a message that there was no audio device detected. After trying several things, I rebooted. Magically, I could play music again. However, a short while later, I again got an error message telling me that there is no audio device found, even though it shows up in Device Manager as working properly. The problem goes away for a short time after I reboot, but returns. It is Realtek AC 97. Why won't my computer keep recognizing it? (It tried going to Realtek's site to download an update. It has updates for Windows 98, 95, etc., but not for XP. Or at least I couldn't find it.)
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe system seems to be very stable at this point in time. I run Norton Utilities and other maintenance sw as well as have a firewall/pest remover/anti-virus. Behavior - most things work fine on the USB ports, either the hub or direct connects. One digital camera will only work when direct connected(not thru the hub). I have a scanner that will only work on a 2003 Compaq Presario, but not on the whitebox on any port. Also, I have had two devices that won't work at all. I have noticed that the USB mass storage device icon doesn't seem to be present now when I attach a flash drive. This is recent behavior and doesn't predate every USB problem.

In control panel under sounds and audio devices, it says I have no audio device, and that there are no playback devices. When I try to play a song in RealPlayer, it says "cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it." Could an overheated chipset cause only the sound to malfunction? My chipset fan recently failed and I was running without it for a little while.

My internal Nvidia nforce sound card has completely disappeared according to windows for no apparent reason. It is not shown in Device Manager and all of my applications give me errors saying i have no sound card. I've tried reinstalling the audio drivers but it makes no difference.Does anyone know whats causing this and how i can solve it?

After going through many trials, tribulations, and attempts to fix my computer, i was left with only one option, to fully restore it back to factory settings. i thought this would cleanse all of my problems. now i have no sound. i have tried running services.msc and windows audio is correctly enabled. it is likely to be a missing sound driver, but i have no clue how to determine where i can get this said driver. i think it is important to note that it appears that none of my usb ports in the front or back of my computer are active.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a USB to SPDIF converter that is supposed to support 5.1 surround. I can hear stereo sound, but not 5.1 surround. I know there are many free tools that enable passthrough on spdif so the receiver does the dedcoding instead of the PC. However windows XP doesn't see the USB audio device as SPDIF is there a way to configure the USB audio device as SPDIF without drivers?

I just got a new computer with an AMD Duron processor, 512 M RAM and Windows XP. Only problem is I've got no audio. I've checked BIOS and sound is enabled but Windows doesn't seem to recognize that the speakers are hooked up. When I tried to play system sounds from the Control Panel, I got an error message that said cannot play sound, your sound card may be in use. The computer was a gift that was bought used and the shop didn't have any documentation with the system. I think this might be a driver issue but I'm not sure how to find out which driver to try.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled my OS and all my software, shortly thereafter I noticed I had an issue where any sound that was coming through my headphones was being retransmitted through the mic, with further testing I found that this was not actually the case but rather any sound that would be output is being retransmitted as audio in, even if I had no speakers, headphones or mics connected. I have looked at and experimented with everything I could in every sound settings.
I have tried updated drivers, the only way for me to stop the issue from occurring is to mute the mic in the recording control, but that stops me from using the mic altogether. I need to be able to use my mic without recording anything that I am hearing as well.
First off I use windows XP with the latest service pack. I'm using the onboard sound card on my motherboard Asus striker II extreme.
The volume of my flash player (I first noticed it when trying to view a video on Hulu) but other flash embedded videos won't play sound either. I thought this was a flash problem, and tried the usual fixes uninstalling reinstalling, running the update utility and removing and reinstalling the plugin. Also it likely isn't a browser issue as embedded videos didn't play on either Firefox or Opera.
After restarting my computer after a few uninstalls I noticed my startup music wasn't playing as well. I'm thinking that it might be some registry error as it seems like the music is very quiet instead of muted, and all of the volume levels in the Sounds and Audio Device Properties menu are at the correct levels, and my other media players play music and movies just fine.
I've browsed the forums and haven't seen anyone with a similar problem or a fix, so any help would be greatly apprciated.
After hardware upgrades, my custom XP Professional audio workstation will not allow me to re-install my Digigram VX-442 audio card driver or on-board audio.
Error message is: Cannot install this hardware.The data is invalid.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am still having a recurring problem with my Realtek Audio Device. This is not a new installation and no other new hardware has been installed on the computer (Win Xp Home, SP2). No conflicts are shown. I fear that some files may have become corrupted but this is one behaviour which constantly recurs - maybe someone has a fix or knows what files I need to replace.When I start up the computer, there is no volume icon, no sound and device manager shows the audio device as unable to start, code 10. All the codecs etc other things under sounds are OK.If I choose to uninstall it, then run add hardware wizard, it will reinstall it no problems and the sound comes back. But next boot up it's gone again.In case of not having read previous post, I suspect some corruption occurred when I had to cold shutdown my computer.
I obviously have the correct drivers on the computer & can load them through hardware wizard - I just don't know why they don't stick on shutdown - it's as if the function which registers the entry in the register is corrupt - I know there are certain files which can be installed or uninstalled from the registry in order to start or stop a service.is it something like this I need to do?
I installed all the Windows updates and loaded the drivers off the utility disk that came with the motherboard. I also got the updates from the GIGABYTE website. The utility app shows all drivers are installed correctly. It took me a couple of days to get audio to work because the initial driver load got corrupted somehow and it wouldn't let me reinstall until I deleted the driver's entry in the registry. After that I was prompted for the driver again and it installed fine and sound finally started working. Everything appears to be working and there is only the one Unknown driver in my Device Properties and it's really irking me. All my drivers were installed correctly in my previous installation

It is from a few years back, but I figured I'd do a clean install of Windows XP on it and run it in an extra room.I copied the drivers over using a program called DriverMax, and it seemed to work successfully. I had the internet right away and everything else I tried worked. The only problem I am having is that there is no sound. It also says there is no audio device found. Device Manager says I have the most up to date Legacy Audio Drivers, but I am still having this problem.Is there another driver that I might need in order for my computer to recognize an audio device.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI don't have sound and haven't for the past few days and then this morning a Found New Hardware Wizard keeps popping up trying to install software for an Unknown Device on High Definition Audio Bus.In the Device Manager, there are yellow question marks near Other Devices and then below it, in sub categories is a list of at least 20 (!) Unknown Device on High Definition Audio Bus.In the Audio Device section, there are NO Playback Devices, NO Recording Devices, No Midi Playback and the same in the Voice section. Usually I have Realtek listed there.
