I downloaded windows defender (beta 2) which downloaded ok but when I go to install it , it says it cant be installed, I have a windows xp. I aslo need a good free spam site. What do you recommend. I have a Nor ton antivirus which does everything but I still get lots of spam.
View 1 Repliesokay at first this wasn't too anoying but now it is a major problem at first it was just that when i went to windows update it would get stuck in the thing where it says that it is checking for the latest updates.to try and solve this issue i did these things:i ran windows update for 3 days straight and didn't do anything on my computer (it was stuck in the screen i mentioned before)i reinstalled windows, but for some reason the problem carried over a friend of mine told me about windows defender and that it was free, so i installed it and behold it uses windows to update and im stuck with the bare bones of the program.
View 4 Replies View RelatedEvery time I go to yahoo mail I have to login even when I chose to be remembered.In another sports forum now I cant post: server allways ask me to login again, and again, , , .At my bank place I can't make operations any longer.It seems IE7 some how cant manage cookies, I have change security leves from high to none without results, moved privacy settings also but nothing, nada!I don't feel there is something especial about IE7, harded to work from IE history and favorites file At MSN feedback havent find any cure or workaround so I'm going to switch back to IE6.01.

When I want to close the P C, I do as always: Click Start, Close, Shut Down. But, the P C instead of closing restarts. My Windows XP-SP2 is installed on Portuguese.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have Windows XP SP2. Somehow Ultimate defender has claimed my system.I have scanned it housecall and stinger and regular micro trend full scan. They have not removed it. I then used combofix, it seemed to help, but I don't think it's all the way off. I see explorer.exe goes to 99% in the tak manager. When I bring up a ie browser, it tries to go to the ultimate defender page. I looked in the registry, I don't see any "ultimate" settings.Here is a hijackthis report after the combofix run.

The Virus protection part of the program expired in just a few months and I don't want to pay more to have a new key, I paid enough already. I was trying to install Norton and it says it cannot install because Defender Pro is there. I tried to uninstall through add and remove.I tried the uninstall that came with Defender Pro, and tried to go into program files and delete the folder myself. It will not uninstall because it is still running. I have exited everything I know how to exit.

What is bizarre is when I manualy try to browse to the content.IE5 folder it is not under Temporary Internet Files. However there is a Content.IE5 folder under Temp.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently installed windows defender beta2 on my computer. When I ran it, it showed that I had a medium risk possible hijacker on my computer. I clicked to repair the issue and that's when all hell broke loose. I have lost everything on my computer. I restarted my computer and all I get is my desktop background minus the task bar, start menu and desktop icons. I also lost Internet Explorer. I can can bring up the task manager screen and use that to browse my folders. All of my folders are listed but most of them are empty. I am able to get online but since internet explorer folder is wiped out, I cannot surf the interent. I just get a screen showing that I need to install Internet explorer. I can receive my Juno e-mail account. When I go into DOS and type in tree, it does list all my folders and the items that these folders are suppose to include. This leads me to believe that my data is all in my computer smewhere but I cannot get access to it. I have tried to start the computer in safe mode but it won't allow me to do so. THe screen just flashes on and off.

So i have to go to Run; %SystemRoot%/system32/services.msc s and restart it. But it just goes out again after a few hours.Windows Firewall will not open. It says; "Windows firewall setting cannot be displayed becasue the associated service is not running." I click ok and it says" Windows cannot start the widows firewall/Internet connection sharing (ICS) service.Windows defender cannot update. It says its trying but then fails and it dosnt display the problem long enough to write it down here. My sound is no longer working. Im about to just give up and reformat and re instal everything. Unless anyone thinks i have a hardware problem

View 1 Replies View RelatedI install Server 2003 Standard SP1 downloaded and installed on a PII 400, 256Mb RAM with IIS, ASP.Net 2.0, SQL server 2000 SP4, Mysql 5, and PHP5, and all without a single hitch...too good to be true. I went ahead and tried on what will be my server PIII600, 512 MB RAM, First try, Server 2003 couldn't find a file when installing, retried and it worked. Downloaded SP1 and when I was extracting it said "file is corrupt", downloaded 4 more times with same result. reformatted and reinstalled 5 more times and cannot get past "file is corrupt" on SP1 and sometimes extracting the .Net 2.0 installer got the same error. I swap all hardware with PC from first try (except RAM, Mobo, CPU, CDROM) with no change. Win98 and XP installed fine on the second PC just can't get server 2003

Now I can't boot up (cold or warm) without using the original disk. Can I just go into setup and change boot settings without re-installing.Is there anything else I should know before I attempt to fix this problem? Now I am ready to get one, but just about the only choice is something pre-loaded with Vista. I have no experience with Vista and have heard more bad than good about it, therefore I think it would be easier to get her up and running if we're not both having to learn a new OS.
I upgraded my computer from ME to XP with few problems but wondered how difficult it would be to take a new laptop and go backwards. I know I'd most likely have to purchase a Full version of XP, but how much of a hassel is it to get all the drivers/XP versions of necessary pre-loaded software? Would a Vista compatible version of say Word work if I did this? Any other problems I haven't thought of?
I re-formated my sisters computer yesterday, and after installing it i had no internet. As i hadn't installed any drivers yet, i understood that. But after heading over to dell's site, downloading all of the drivers for her computer and then installing them, i STILL do not have any internet. I don't see any connections on the computer either, it's just blank!

And when i try to play a dvd r it won't, it will only play cdr's.
I simply want the correct procedure to installing XP Pro that comes with service pack2 onto a brand new, off the shelf HDD. A HDD that has never had anything on it before.if I will remove this HDD which I am using to conect to the net and re-install the new one. I will attempt to wipe the partitions that were created by the XP Pro cd and then try the whole process again. But without the floppys this time. I wonder really, if there will be any difference?

The partition was made and activated, then I changed the boot order to run from the CD.The CD booted and ran, the files said they were loading, up until it said Loading Windows. After this I get a message saying that no hard drives have been found and all I can do is restart. Is there a reason why its doing this, and how do I get around this?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Dimension 4300 with 40gb HD (purchased in 2000).I installed a 2nd 120gb HD with two partitions; (P) for the paging file and (V) for digital editing.I want to install XP on the second HD to a) install SP2 and b) take advantage of its 7200 RPM speed.I will reconfigure the PC so that the 120gb will be the master and the 40gb will be the slave. Change the BIOS so that the cd drive will be bootable.
1) During the installation process of XP, I will partition the 120gb HD as C: but how will the PC recognize the 40gb HD since its formatted as the original c drive?
2) Any suggestions on partitioning the 120gb for performance and security
3) What is the activation process for XP? (previously done by Dell).
I am trying to install software, a motor car workshop manual, which appears to want to install itself to my C: drive, suggesting there is not enough room, understandable because my drive C: is a Zip100 disc. My hard drive is drive E: The installer does not give me the option to chose the installation location, is there any way I can force it to use E:Windows will not allow me to change the drive letter of the boot drive.

The thing is that I have so many programs that it feels a bit slow at boot and when doing other operations.
