I did a fresh install of Windows XP SP3 and seem to be having issues with my DVD drive (LG GDR8162B ROM and LG GSA-4160B RW). They both think they are CD Roms and will not play any DVDs. Iv attempted to reinstall them but XP keeps installing them as CD players and I am at a loss to what to do next.

I have a Dell PC. I installed a copy of Windows Vista on it. I don't like it, so I am trying to reinstall XP Home. When I click on the cd drive the XP Home CD is in, it brings up the menu, but the "Install Windows XP" option is grayed out. I try to boot from the disk, but when it is done loading all the things and I tell it I do not want to repair, but to install, it says "setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer" and makes me reboot my computer. Vista still works fine, I know the Hard Drive is working
I just tried to reformat and install windows XP home edition, and upon coming to the screen of "Repair" or "Install fresh copy" I received an error reporting:Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.Setup cannot continue. To quit setup, press F3.I was trying to use ubuntu but my ram wasn't high enough, so now it won't let me run windows xp again.
I have a major problem with my Packard Bell iMedia D815AW home desktop. Ever since I installed a Lite-On DVD-RW into it, it started making a lot of noise (a bit like the sound of a typewriter tapping) and started crashing. I removed the DVD-RW drive, only for the problem to continue. The computer kept crashing (often showing the blue crash screen, other times showing a black 'insert floppy disk' screen, sometimes just restarting itself). Running the Windows disk check utility at start-up would not work - the computer would freeze while the disk scan occured (I tried many times). I ran disk registery programs (ie- Registry Mechanic, etc), anti-virus software, defragmentation, etc. etc. but the problem remained. Yesterday, I decided I would try reinstalling (or restoring?) Windows XP again (with the intention of fixing the problem without deleting my personal files on the computer). However, upon instertion of the disk, Windows XP claimed it could not reinstall, as the Windows version on my computer was too recent. I assumed that the reason for this was that I had installed Windows XP Serice Pack 2 and so the version was too recent for the installation disk. So, I thought I would uninstall service pack 2 and then try to reinstall Windows XP. However, while uninstalling service pack 2, the computer crashed. Since then, whenever I try to startup Windows, the computer restarts after about 30 seconds of loading. I can enter the startup screen which gives you access to entering through Safe Mode, Debugging, etc - however entering through these modes has the same problem though with the computer restarting before reaching Windows. So, I entered the computer BIOS at startup and changed it to load via CD, inserting the Windows XP disk. I tried to use the 'Recovery Console' option, however the error message "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" showed. It then asked me to restart the computer by hitting F3. I then tried to use the Windows install option by restarting the computer and loading the Windows XP disk, but the same "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" message showed. So, i cant load the computer, nor reinstall the software. I dont want to lose all the files on my computer.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI re-installed XP after having a mal-ware/spy-ware issue. The problem is my machine no longer recognizes my DVD players properly.
Both work working fine prior to the re-install. Now neither will recognize a CD-ROM (I have enabled CD-recording) and neither will burn a DVD. Further, one of them is listed under Explorer as a CD-ROM rather than a DVD-ROM.
I have tried delete both from device manager and having XP reinstall them on start up but no luck.
I wanted to download additional content from the XP installation disc. I selected add digital media from choices and clicked the button. It started analyzing the system then suddenly started deleting a whole slug of files. It finished and rebooted, after which neither of my dvd drives would recognize discs. Windows media player was gone too. Both player models show up on the add hardware list in control panel. I wrote down the models and downloaded drivers for one of them and it wouldn't install them because it said the drive wasn't present. The "add new hardware" said the same thing, though it was on the list.

For shells i have tried both bblean and standard explorer, media players i have tried are windows media player, winamp, and bsplayer. It dosent actually crash the program, it just brings up the little "this program needs to close" thing. if i drag it to the side the video will continue to play (somtimes). somtimes the videos wont load at all.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem.
- I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery.
- I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install.
- I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help.
- I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters.
- i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios.
I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.

For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. The old drive is still installed, and I can select which drive I am booting off of. Boot off the old drive, I'm on my old PC. Boot off the new one, I'm on the new.Only one of the XPs are active at a time. The other says it must be activated.
So, at this point, I boot to the old, and (with this OS activated)run the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. I specify that I am saving the data on one of the drives in the PC. It runs and says it's successful. Then I boot off the new drive and (now with THIS OS activated) when I point the FAST to the directory where I saved the files, the wizard says there's no files there to load. I can see .dat files in the directory, but the wizard can't.
I have a dual boot arrangement with 98SE and XP. In XP after switching on there is no sign of my DVD/CD-ROM drives in Windows explorer unles I go through the following sequence: Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Mngr -> IDE/ATA/ATAPI Controlers -> NVIDIA NFORCE MCP2 IDE Controller -> Right click , scan for Hardware Changes, then the DVD/CD-ROM drives appear and work perfectly

View 15 Replies View RelatedI have a friend who is having a problem with his laptop.I don't know what kind of laptop he has but the problem is his laptop cannot detect any cd/dvd rom drives. It will not detect the internal cd/dvd rom or an external dvd rom (connected thru usb2.0). It does however recognise the harddrive. He is using Windows 2000 OS. For obvious reasons he cannot put in the Win2000 CD and reinstall drivers (if that is what the problem is). So, does anyone know what could be wrong? I can get more information on the laptop if this would help.

I do not know when these went missing because my grandad does not use the drives often. I can still open the cd-rom drive and I can hear it loading, but I cannot open the cdwr drive.
