Since upgrading to XP Pro from W2K a few weeks back my CDR and DVD drives are no longer recognised. In device manager an exclamation shows and I've been unable to find either an XP or more up to date driver. The drives in question are the NEC NR-7800A and NEC DV-5800A (In a Dell Dimesion 4300 machine) Does anyone have any idea on how I might approach getting these drives operating again
View 15 RepliesMy son purchased a 'NEW and LEGAL' game called warcraft 3. The game installed ok (presumably) When he clicks play the cd spins for a couple of minutes and then we get the message '' check cd is in drive and click retry'. I have searched the net and tried all info I have found but to no avail. Even went through Blizzard.nets 12 step troubleshooter for this problem. The disk drive is fine with all other games and the game is fine when tested on a friends comp. I have win xp home and virus free, adaware done.Obviously there is some setting on my comp that is causing this and I am lost as to where to look next. Some security setting that is clashing with it? I have noticed there is c-dilla? on the system and that is a copy protection program, could this cause problems. As I said the game is genuine and would prefer a comp fix other than a nocd crack.This is day six of trying, my son is 'over it' but I cant let the comp win any help would be appreciated.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy password (administrator) and wife's password are not being recognized, therefore we cannot log onto windows. We are certain the correct passwords are being entered. My password includes an uppercase "U" but I noticed that when I hit shift+U a charecter is not entered and the cursor moves one space left. When I strike U with the capslock on a charecter is entered but the password is still not recognized. I tried to boot into safe mode but I am still required to enter a password and encounter the same problems.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had a hard drive whose partition table got corrupted. It is no longer recognized in Windows (2000) as a valid drive (Do you wish to format, etc). I CAN, however, boot with a Win 98 diskette and DOS sees the hard drive. I want to copy selected files to another win 2000 hard drive but because of the win 98 boot, the file names are truncated to the 8 character limit. Can I boot up with something else to see the long file names and preserve them when copying. I have Ghost and XXCOPY. Win 2000 boot floppies?
Main computer in home on Comcast cable..........CD/RW suddenly was not recognized and internet stopped working. Switched out modem, still no internet. Comcast tech came out, ran everthing to his computer and internet worked. Plugged modem in via USB and tried to load USB drivers, but no CD/RW...I took CD to secondary computer (hooked up to the main by wireless connection) to download drivers onto a floppy and THIS CD/RW would not recognize the data CD.......in explorer it showed the D: drive but would not read the data CD...I put in a music CD and in explorer it showed everything listed on the CD...........
CD/RW worked briefly on main computer (long enough to load the USB drivers), and even connected to Internet via USB in the modem.....but again, the CD/RW quit and the internet connection was lost again. Do you make any sense of this? I'm so tired of all of it.
I purchased new blank Sony 700 MB CD RW's for a little more capacity. Windows & my Nero 8 both eventually refuse to record to the discs because they are recognizing them as "illegal discs". This error message must result from the size of the disc as I have no problems with 650 MB discs. I was able to record to one of the discs with another computer.This second computer is 64 bit XP VS my 32 bit. The burners are identical, and the Nero 7 used is nearly identical.I then erased the disc (with Nero 7) and tried it in the problem computer same issue.

I have a 60GB Seagate HDD running Windows XP, which when connected as the Master Drive will no longer boot Windows. Instead I get an error screen reading "Disk Boot Failure - Insert System Disk and Press Enter."The drive is recognised by the BIOS approximately 1/4 of the time I have it plugged in. I have attempted to run the drive as a slave to my current HD on the same motherboard which I am running at the moment to no avail. I have tried using the program "GetDataBack for NTFS" which failed to recognise the drive.
I have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem.
- I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery.
- I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install.
- I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help.
- I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters.
- i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios.
I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI work for a fire department and they have Desktop Authority map certain network drives when they login. For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. Is this the cause of the dissapearing drives?

In XP after switching on there is no sign of my DVD/CD-ROM drives in Windows explorer unles I go through the following sequence: Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Mngr -> IDE/ATA/ATAPI Controlers -> NVIDIA NFORCE MCP2 IDE Controller -> Right click , scan for Hardware Changes, then the DVD/CD-ROM drives appear and work perfectly

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a friend who is having a problem with his laptop.I don't know what kind of laptop he has but the problem is his laptop cannot detect any cd/dvd rom drives. It will not detect the internal cd/dvd rom or an external dvd rom (connected thru usb2.0). It does however recognise the harddrive. He is using Windows 2000 OS. For obvious reasons he cannot put in the Win2000 CD and reinstall drivers (if that is what the problem is). So, does anyone know what could be wrong? I can get more information on the laptop if this would help.

I do not know when these went missing because my grandad does not use the drives often. I can still open the cd-rom drive and I can hear it loading, but I cannot open the cdwr drive. View 2 Replies View Relatedjust recently i was doing my usual bit and both cd/dvd drives droped out, after vigorous testing i found cdrom.sys and its shared componants refused to mount the drives as the service could not start, so i tried updating the drivers - no drivers more suitable than the ones i already have, my oppinion is the files are corrupt but it seems pretty hard to find replacments without individually going through the entire .cab database on the x64 disk, this is something i wish to avoid just incase its not even the problem.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've this habit of installing softwares on different drives. The OS goes into C drive. Any other softwares that are from trustworthy sources goes into C drive along with the OS. I then install all the games, other softwares from not so trustworthy sources or any new programs I'm trying(like a typing tutor) in D drive. I keep E drive for storage purpose. This is my arrangement for my computer and on all of my friends computers on which I installed the Windows.
I thought it would help keep the OS safe(!) and reinstalling or upgrading would be easy and I don't have to reinstall all the softwares I installed. Am I right in that? What are these dll files. For any software I installed whether in C drive or D drive there seems to be a dll file in the C drive. 1) Does it really matter where I install the softwares(apart from the OS) or does having a seperate drive (usually D drive) for installing 3rd party softwares makes any sense?
2) Do I really have to install all the softwares (installed on D drive) again if I format and reinstall OS in C drive?
My laptop came with one harddisk and a DVD drive. These were initially C and D drives.I later used a partition software and made 3 partitions out of my single harddisk. I meant to have these as C: (original drive), D:, and E: Drives. How can I change the oder/visible sequence of drives as per my requirements?

View 13 Replies View RelatedHaving a major problem with my PC locating my Pinoneer DVD drive & my Sony CD drive. When I go into my device manager, both drives have a yellow dot with an explantion point. When I try to enable them, I get a message saying windows has located the driver but the hardware is not working. When I look under My Computer, the drives are not even listed under Storage Devices. I've even atempted to do a system restore but not matter what restore point I go back to, Windows says it's unable to restore from that point, choose another. I am far from a PC guru and don't really understand much technical stuff. Can someone help me get up & running again?
