Mapped Network Drives: Programs Unable To Find Drives?
Apr 20, 2006I have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".

Dec 27, 2007I recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem.
- I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery.
- I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install.
- I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help.
- I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters.
- i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios.
I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
System Not Seeing Removable Drives - Get Dvd Drives Back
Jun 26, 2010My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. Mar 10, 2006I am using Windows XP Professional SP2 on an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe MB. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.

Jun 6, 2005I work for a fire department and they have Desktop Authority map certain network drives when they login. For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. Is this the cause of the dissapearing drives?

In XP after switching on there is no sign of my DVD/CD-ROM drives in Windows explorer unles I go through the following sequence: Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Mngr -> IDE/ATA/ATAPI Controlers -> NVIDIA NFORCE MCP2 IDE Controller -> Right click , scan for Hardware Changes, then the DVD/CD-ROM drives appear and work perfectly

In device manager an exclamation shows and I've been unable to find either an XP or more up to date driver. Mar 3, 2005I have a friend who is having a problem with his laptop.I don't know what kind of laptop he has but the problem is his laptop cannot detect any cd/dvd rom drives. It will not detect the internal cd/dvd rom or an external dvd rom (connected thru usb2.0). It does however recognise the harddrive. He is using Windows 2000 OS. For obvious reasons he cannot put in the Win2000 CD and reinstall drivers (if that is what the problem is). So, does anyone know what could be wrong? I can get more information on the laptop if this would help.

Mar 16, 2007just recently i was doing my usual bit and both cd/dvd drives droped out, after vigorous testing i found cdrom.sys and its shared componants refused to mount the drives as the service could not start, so i tried updating the drivers - no drivers more suitable than the ones i already have, my oppinion is the files are corrupt but it seems pretty hard to find replacments without individually going through the entire .cab database on the x64 disk, this is something i wish to avoid just incase its not even the problem.

Mar 16, 2008I've this habit of installing softwares on different drives. The OS goes into C drive. Any other softwares that are from trustworthy sources goes into C drive along with the OS. I then install all the games, other softwares from not so trustworthy sources or any new programs I'm trying(like a typing tutor) in D drive. I keep E drive for storage purpose. This is my arrangement for my computer and on all of my friends computers on which I installed the Windows.
I thought it would help keep the OS safe(!) and reinstalling or upgrading would be easy and I don't have to reinstall all the softwares I installed. Am I right in that? What are these dll files. For any software I installed whether in C drive or D drive there seems to be a dll file in the C drive. 1) Does it really matter where I install the softwares(apart from the OS) or does having a seperate drive (usually D drive) for installing 3rd party softwares makes any sense?
2) Do I really have to install all the softwares (installed on D drive) again if I format and reinstall OS in C drive?
Order Of Drives
Sep 15, 2007My laptop came with one harddisk and a DVD drive. These were initially C and D drives.I later used a partition software and made 3 partitions out of my single harddisk. I meant to have these as C: (original drive), D:, and E: Drives. How can I change the oder/visible sequence of drives as per my requirements?

Feb 13, 2007Having a major problem with my PC locating my Pinoneer DVD drive & my Sony CD drive. When I go into my device manager, both drives have a yellow dot with an explantion point. When I try to enable them, I get a message saying windows has located the driver but the hardware is not working. When I look under My Computer, the drives are not even listed under Storage Devices. I've even atempted to do a system restore but not matter what restore point I go back to, Windows says it's unable to restore from that point, choose another. I am far from a PC guru and don't really understand much technical stuff. Can someone help me get up & running again?

I hadn't used the burners for a while, now they aren't working (can read from them but most of the time won't write). In the device managerdriveproperties, Win XP sees them all as SCSI devices. How is this possible? The BIOS has them as IDE primary and secondary drives, so where does the SCSI come in? Could this be part of the burning problem I am having?

Oct 10, 2008I just installed a 320gb I had around in a spare PC. I was reading up on jumping everything and understood that I should set the main HD as master and the spare HD as slave on the primary IDE connector, then set my DVD drive as CS on the secondary.My problem is that the master and slave connectors on the ribbon cable aren't long enough to reach both drives.(only places the drives will fit) So I hooked everything up CS while I put the main HD on the primary IDE and then hooked the DVD and spare drive on the secondary IDE. Everything seems to work fine and I can see both drives and everything, but on bootup I have to go into the boot menu and pick the main HD to boot. Is it safe to run everything this way? And if so how do I fix the booting issue?

May 26, 2006A Dell Dimensions 2400 with Pentium 4, 256MB memory and a 80GB hard drive. He is running windows xp home edition. We opened up the tower to clean out all the dust using air cans. We were very careful not to touch any wiring or connections to the CD roms or hard drive. We were ready to install 256MB chip more of memory to make it 512MB. However he purchased the wrong chip so we did not install it. I did remove the memory stick it had to show him what to purchase. I then made sure we reinstalled it back properly and tightly. We also installed tune up 2006 and Norton system works to clean out his system. I had tested the cd roms and they seemed to be working. Then my nephew tried to install his I-pod software and the program did not open itself. He then went to my computer to open the software manually and realized that the d:/drive and the e:/drives were not showing. I tried updating the drivers with no luck. My next step was to delete the cd rom's in device manager and reboot the sysytem. The system recognized the hardware and installed the drivers but the cd roms still do not appear in My Computer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW I also tried to do a system restore to an earlier date but windows xp could not restore to an earlier date.

But now since I re-installed Windows XP, my dvd and cd drives don't show up in Windows. In BIOS they are recognized as ch.0 master and ch.0 slave drives. But in Windows they're not there in My Computer or Device Manager. I pop in a disc and it spins around but nothing happens.
