Fresh install of windows XP.My computer has decided that connected usb drives do not exist.I can access them from Disk management. if I assign it a drive letter manually. But that is kind of hit or miss.This includes thumb drives and card readers.Other usb devices work fine.
View 14 RepliesThis afternoon I was at a friend's house and we installed CCleaner. After installing it, we went through the startup list and removed alot of stuff, and unfortunately removed two entries...one referencing DLA and the mentioned DVD.Now trying to access the DVD and CD-RW drives and it acts like a disk is not inserted. Went into Device Manager and both listed correctly with no problems. Made several attempts to uninstall them and reinstall them but still no luck.

I get a message "Windows Script Host" and "cannot find script file, "C:autorun.vbs" when I click on my "C" icon. Right clicking gives me gibberish in the menu box where the "Open" should be. I can still get through to the contents via My Documents and up-leveling.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my operating system to 'Windows XP Professional' and I am happy with the outcome, with one exception.Since upgrading I am unable to easily access the 'my computer' facility.The symptoms are as follows. I double click the 'my computer' icon and the window opens, however, no drive details appear and I see the 'waggling torch' symbol which indicates that the computer is looking for the drives. Unfortunately this continues for some time ( often up to 5 minutes, and sometimes it will not find the drives at all
View 7 Replies View RelatedA week or so ago I preformed a repair installation of Windows XP Professional SP2 (retail) after basic Windows features (such as WMP10 and Search) became corrupted. The repair worked without a hitch, except for the fact that I've been denied access to my optical drives. All administrative accounts can access the drives without a problem, but limited and guest accounts can not. It doesn't matter if it's a music CD, data DVD burned on the limited user's account, or no disk is even inserted...each time I receive the ''Access denied'' error. All other removable storage (flash drives, card reader, etc) are accessable on all accounts.
I've tried restarting my computer, booting in Safe Mode, checking permissions (found nothing relevant), scanning for malware (sparkling clean), and even performing another repair installation. The drives are new (about 6 months old), fully functional, cables are firmly connected, all of the latest drivers are installed, and nothing (to my knowledge) has changed prior to or since the repair installation. I checked the Microsoft database, but only found registry edits for NT 4.0...Windows XP wasn't mentioned as having this issue.Is there a permission I have missed, registry edit, etc that might give my limited user accounts access to the LiteOn DL DVD+/-RW and Sony DVD-ROM drives again? Suggestions are appreciated, but solutions are preferable.
i have three hard drives : 1 Hitachi 250 GB Sata 2 on Nvidia Controller 2 Samsung 80 GB Sata in RAID O on Silicon Controller 1. the problem is when i boot into windows the LAN connection (two small monitors in the taskbar) takes atleast 10 minutes to show !! and theother problem is that until tht two monitors dnt appear i dnt get any reply frm right clicking any of the drives to see their properties and frm My Computer too, but as soon as the two small monitors come all the properties just pop up.
2. Sometimes suddenly in between Windows shows Write Delayed Failed Error only on the Raid Drives and i cnt access them afterwards,restarting solves the problem tho but jst for sumtime.
Everytime I boot I get an "Administrator has prohibited access to CD/DVD DRIVES and removable storage devices" All of my USB ports and my CD are greyed out with a red circle and bar symbol. I am running XP Pro with SP3. I am the only user of this computer and I did not restrict them. I have gone in with the secret administrator account and it is also locked.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem.
- I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery.
- I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install.
- I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help.
- I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters.
- i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios.
I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI work for a fire department and they have Desktop Authority map certain network drives when they login. For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. Is this the cause of the dissapearing drives?

We don't have one of those password reset disk that the Windows website says. I have a disk that says "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition System Recovery CD/DVD" I was told if I reinstalled Windows on the computer that it would erase the entire harddrive. There are alot of pictures on the computer, not to mention Microsoft Office, that I don't want to lose. My mom passed away suddenly and while I know her other passwords, this one is different which leads me to believe one of my younger cousins was messing with her computer and did something they didn't mean.Is there anyway possible to reset the password and use the computer without losing all the pictures on it?

View 7 Replies View Relatedi just installed a fresh winxp pro, i did not set any password so the windows starts up without asking password, so i believed i have the administrative rights i have 2 local drives (c:) and (d:) i run gpedit.msc and configure the following:
1. remove run in start menu
2. remove search in start menu
3. prohibit command prompt to be use
4. Prevent access to drive access from my computer (drive c: only)
5. Hide specific drive in my computer (drive c: only)
i closed gpedit.msc now i cant re-run gpedit.msc to configure my settings again because i cannot access drive c: where gpedit resides (c:windowssystem32gpedit.msc) i dont want to re-install the whole thing or to start all over again. winxp expert
I did a terrible mistake today. Typically I install XP in C drive and keep My Documents folder in D drive. All of my hard disk drives (except the linux partitions) are NTFS. I encrypted the My Documents folder and all of its files and subfolders.Today I reinstalled XP in the C drive, after a quick format on it. I was unaware of the fact that what might be happened to My Documents folder. Now I can only view the files and folders inside My Documents folder. Neither I open any file, nor I decrypt those files. Windows is saying access denied.

I ran a windows recovery on my HardDrive yesterday - I selected NOT to delete any of my files.Now Ive set windows all up again, and I cannot access my documents. Firstly when i right click on the my documents folder it says 'empty', but when i try to double click it it gives me a 'cant access' error.My hard disk is showing on 1.8 Gb remaining, so my documents are still there somewhere, i just dont know how to access them?
